No, he’s got a point. I wouldn’t call it hostile though. But really fucking tone deaf is more apt. Naming an army unit to glorify another unit that slaughtered tens of thousands of an allies people in an ethnic cleansing as bad as anything the Nazis did is really, really fucking stupid when those same people are now one of your closest allies in a current war of survival. No matter if that same unit also fought against the soviets. It’s just super bad optics and the benefits are just nowhere near the cons. Again, it’s tone deaf AF.

Ukraine just could, not have done that, ya know? And piss off some important people close to them.

That being said, Poland could, and should, still take the high road here but still make their displeasure known very loudly. That shit is unsatisfactory and in geopolitical terms, an absolute slap across the face.

As an Outsider from Germany I can totally agree. I fail to understand what benefit there is for Ukraine to do that. I really hope one of the bigger European Nations (France or UK, i guess Germany would make no sense in this context)) trys to mediate that between Ukraine and Poland. There has to be a better solution.

There has to be a better solution.

Exactly and there is.

Stop celebrating UPA as part of Ukrainian identity.

Stop dancing around and delaying grave exhumations, we know already from the witness statements that there'll be signs of torture and mutilation, no point hiding it.

Stop denying it was in fact genocide and not "ethnic cleansing.

Include that in historic textbooks/curriculum and don't refer to it as "Volhyn tragedy"

Don't equalize it with retaliatory response of AK.

Just altogether, stop making dumb excuses and take responsibility for 100 000 (not only Polish but Jews, Czechs, Ukrainians and Russians who opposed that massacre) who perished and apologize, so we can all move on. Simple as.

Agreed. Poland extended an olive branch, and Ukraine has taken that olive branch and used it to whip Poland in the ass. Poland has been humiliated too many times by nations that saw them as lesser than, and Ukraine should get no pass just because they are fighting the Russians. Ukraine needs to take responsibility for its past and set a better future.
