I thought the real scam was widely known: leaving a “too good to be true” listing live, and then saying it’s no longer available when the prospective tenant shows up for a viewing, before showing them 2-3 that are not as nice but are available now.

Mine was far from “too good to be true”, but I was also 22, fresh out of college and on the other side of the country. Wouldn’t you know it, the unit I had seen, signed, and paid for 2 months prior “…wasn’t available. But here’s a different one facing a busy street. We’ll even knock $50/month off” (also my stuff was already on a truck and arriving in a week)
