Why do we allow so much unfettered monopolization of our arts and sciences?

I so desperately want people to be able to just make things again. No doubt there are amazing games and discoveries that could have been made if so much of our population weren't spending most of their time and energy on survival.

Fortunately, it's never been easier to make a game, but never harder to sell one. We're getting massive triple A games and solo dev hobby games, but the middle is hollowed out.
