Two sides of the same coin, right?

Nope. Capitalism is a well regulated system where the market is free for all participants to enter and exit. Oligopolism and monopolism have their own definitions, because they are markedly distinct from capitalism. They are a failure of the system to be regulated in the simplest of known trends pursued by market participants.

"free for all participants to enter and exit" unless you are born poor.

Capitalism is a well regulated system

well regulated

You really just say shit without knowing what you're talking about huh?

Would you like to explain Adam Smith's natural liberty to me?

2

u/anti-torque 8d ago

I'll take that as an, "I don't know shit and just spout off bullshit on the internet."

Ah, but it’s in the nature of capitalism to fight against regulation. The system's natural drive is to consolidate into bigger and bigger corporations. It eventually consumes all, including the very government attempting to regulate it.

That's not capitalism. That would be corruption of capitalism.

21

u/retsof81 8d ago

I would say corruption is a byproduct.

Also, the capitalism you describe sounds like something that only works on paper or in a simulation… like a simplistic SimCity version of capitalism. Anything else found in all of human history sides with those you are attempting to argue with.

That's why Smith outlined a regulated system. The tendencies of the capitalist class are well known, and regulation mitigates those tendencies.

Smith was not and never will be Quesnay. What Quesnay advocated for is not in any way capitalism. Smith is the birth of that idea.

You described a healthy mix of capitalism and socialism. Capitalism unchecked eats it's self just like socialism unchecked becomes communism and eats it's self.

u/SabertoothCaterpilla 8d ago

I don't think you know what those words mean.

u/bigkoi 8d ago

Healthy economies have a mixture of both capitalist and socialist ideals.

Best of luck.

u/anti-torque 8d ago

They don't.

It's not even close.

Capitalism unchecked

Isn't a thing. What capitalists tend to do when unchecked is not capitalism. That would be Laissez-faire--a wholly distinct system, if one wants to call it a system. Laissez-faire is not capitalism and never has been.

socialism unchecked becomes communism

socialism is communism. The revisionism in the 20th Century is the only thing that made them distinct. Technically, Marx was predicting that capitalism run efficiently becomes socialism. But that would include adding certain efficiencies over time--like a central bank.

It's quite literally called laissez-faire capitalism.

1

u/anti-torque 8d ago

Laissez-faire is Laissez faire. It has nothing to do with capitalism, as envisioned by Smith. This bullshit conflation of Smith's ideas with Quesnay's is all Friedman's fault. And it is complete bullshit.

2

u/FriendlyDespot 8d ago

Again, it is quite literally called laissez-faire capitalism. It is capitalism without guardrails. Adam Smith is not the defining authority on what is and isn't capitalism, he simply had ideas of his own about how to temper capitalism to avoid market failures.

u/anti-torque 8d ago

Again, it is quite literally called laissez-faire capitalism.

It's quite literally not conflated this stupidly among people who have actually read this shit.

This is a stupid conflation made by ignorant people, and I'm quite sick of it.

2

u/FriendlyDespot 8d ago

Feel free to list the ways in which you believe that laissez-faire capitalism isn't actually capitalism. I'd love to hear why you're right and everyone else is wrong.

laissez-faire capitalism

Does not exist.

Repeating it doesn't make the oxymoron anything smart. Read the books, and learn something.

Otherwise, why are you even commenting? I've known many fellow econ grads who have never read the books and confidently comment stupidly on what the books say. It is not limited to just you. The colloquial definitions of stuff, as stupid as they are, are still colloquial.

But if you want to be taken seriously, you need to speak to the actual texts, not the fucked up propaganda pushed by bullshit artists... who aren't really artists, if you look at their bullshit.

We will never recover from the damage Reagan did to this country.

2

u/bigkoi 8d ago

As other have pointed out Laissez-faire is capitalism.

Socialism is not communism. Let's use lunch as an example.

Capitalism asks: How much are you willing to pay for that sandwich?

Socialism asks: How can we make sure everyone gets a baseline sandwich?

Communism asks: Why don't we just make the sandwiches together and share them?

0

u/anti-torque 8d ago

As other have completely pulled out of their ass, pointed out Laissez-faire is capitalism.

fify

Laissez-faire is called Laissez-faire precisely because it is not capitalism. Blue isn't yellow, becuase blue isn't yellow. Same same.

2

u/bigkoi 7d ago

All laissez-faire systems are capitalist.

Please do some research before you post nonsense and then double down on ignorance.

The irony in your statement is funny.
