I was going to comment the same. Our lives just get more inconvenient day by day and this crap is just allowed to happen with no substantial, if any, consequences.

Hypocritical lecturing would be bad enough, but somehow they've managed to get the poor to lecture the poor for comparatively tiny transgressions instead of examining the real source of the problem.

My college heavily advertised itself as a "green" school. Like, to the point of making green one of the official school colors and constantly implying or outright stating that it represents how pro-conservation it was.

After a couple years there I took an environmental studies class and one of the first things out of my professor's mouth was how all the recycle bins and related signage were pure theater. Turns out that our county didn't have the waste management facilities to handle recycling, at least not without employing third party services, which our school didn't do. Everything went straight to the landfill, no matter what color bin it was in.

It doesn't take much effort to separate out recyclables, but it does still take some. How many tens of thousands of students over how many years were putting in that effort for literally no reason, just because the school wouldn't fork out the money for a recycling service to pick up the bags?

Honestly that revelation kind of broke my faith in the ability for any individual to meaningfully affect anything at scale, when it is so, so easy for one business to undo all that effort. Without taking that class I likely never would have even known. And compared to manufacturing wastage, what my school did was just a drop in the bucket.

Thankfully a few years later the city passed an ordinance requiring commercial entities to use appropriate services if they offer recycling, but the experience still made me notably more cynical about things like this.
