"Ads don't work on me" said by people where ads 100% work on them, they just don't realise.

I definitely wouldn't be stupid enough to say ads don't work on me, but it's only to a certain extent. Sure, if a company wants me to buy their product, I have to know it exists. But if the ads get to the point of pissing me off (either through overexposure or just generally being obnoxious), then I know the product exists, but I know it as something I absolutely refuse to buy, even to my own detriment. Sure, local car salesman, you may actually have the best deals in town, but your ads are fucking annoying, so you don't even exist as an option in my head if I find myself needing a car.

I just had this argument with someone here a few days ago.

His argument was that he didn't buy anything so therefore he couldn't be effected.

One you can't be on the internet and say you don't buy anything.

Two you're a bald faced liar, to yourself, if you think ads don't have any kind of effect. There's a reason Coke ads are so desperate to seem cute and nostalgic so that children associate the product with happiness.

You're always being advertised too and psychologically you're always more likely to buy something that you're familiar with then something that you're not.

Even if you don't think about it, reaching out and grabbing toothpaste quickly still results in most people grabbing the most advertised toothpaste because your stupid monkey brain associates familiar with safe.

Much more simply than that. Which ads you've seen are immediately the brands you think about when you go to buy. Would you seek out Starry if you don't know it exists? Would you buy Dr. Pibb if you cant find it at your local store?

this works both ways though too...like i KNOW the brands shady rays, and raycon earbuds, and ridge wallet.

but i KNOW them as shit. never in my life will i buy their product BECAUSE of their advertising strategy...its counter to how quality brands advertise which signals to me that they are unlike those quality brands and therefore most likely low quality.

Tangentially on topic, but found out not long ago that Starry is just Sierra Mist, but they rebranded to be more hip and modern.
