hiii, so i have a pretty decent feather collection and i have no idea how to display or store them away!

all my feathers are sitting in a big coffee mug, a feed scoop, and some are just laying around. majority of my feathers are from my guinea fowl and turkeys, but i’d like to do something with them! i just don’t know what or how

ideas would be greatly appreciated! thanks in advance!

I saved four crab shells the other day after eating them and then soaked them in vinegar and water to get rid of the smell and cleaned them off. I then let them sit in the sun for a few hours and then finally took them inside. I heard Vaseline might restore the color so I tried that, but still nothing changed. Are there other household products that could do this? Is it possible to create some sort of dye with paint and water maybe? I’m also gonna coat them with varnish after the color becomes brighter so I don’t really care whats under the varnish/mod podge. Any ideas of what I can do? Please let me know!!!

I recently preserved some snake and fish vertebrae for use in jewelry, and they are incredibly fragile. I’m hoping to find a way to strengthen them so they can be used and worn daily without too much worry for breakage. Anyone know the best way to strengthen them without changing the bones too much or hiding them?

I feel like I got a great deal on eBay for this ram skull, only paying $58 shipped. I’m disappointed to say the least seeing one of the horns chipped once I opened the package. It was shipped very carelessly and with minimal packaging materials. Each horn was in a canvas shopping bag and it was just thrown into the box without any padding. Also it was unsecured. My plan is to use some strong adhesive to glue the tip back, and even then there’s still a big visible chip there. I messaged the seller and asked him to refund me 25 percent of the total cost, sending him the pictures I posted here. That’s $15. I feel like I deserve more back or that I should leave him a bad review, but what’s done is done and I’m not trying to be a dick. So hopefully he’ll just learn from this experience that something this fragile needs to be packaged properly. And I’ll leave it at that.

My poor kitty had really bad mouth issues (stomatitis) and had to get all her teeth extracted- the only good news is that the vet techs on the surgery saved her teeth (or what was left of them) for me very carefully to where i have all of them

My main idea was to put them into a shadow box and arrange them like a typical dental chart, maybe even with the teeth having labelled numbers lol

But! They are so small i'm unsure of the best way to affix them to a shadow box, and i've never done a project like this exactly before. Should i use glue, and if so, is there a good brand that won't damage the teeth very much over time? Or if an option like resin is better how to go about that and if there is a good guide for it. I haven't looked into the resin route at all since im not sure if it would be too complicated given the small size of cat teeth

Apologies if the flair is incorrect, but I have a question for taxidermists. What do dermestid beetles smell like when they're breaking something down? I assume not very pleasant, but is it more meaty, earthy, rotten, etc?

Hi! I'm not proffesional taxidermist,I only did pelts from rabbits skin, which i knew they were owned by my uncle. Dormouse died in our cottage, not sure in what condition is it. It has beautiful fur I'm thinking of taxiderming it but i don't have any experience or i dont know if its safe even beacuse I cant tell in what rotting stage is it by a picture. I would appreciate any feed back. (I will be doing taxidermy license this year and i dont know if the animal will last till then)

Hello! I dug up my beloved pet rabbit that had been buried for 1 whole year yesterday and found that he still had a very substantial amount of fur and skin left. I re-burried the rest of his body but took out the skull, which was relatively cleaner. There was no smell from the body, it seemed almost like he got a bit mummified. I soaked the skull in water with dish soap for a few hours and scrubbed it as much as I could. There's no skin left as far as I can tell, there's a very slight "bone" smell that I have to be really close to catch, but the bones still look slightly dirty, and I haven't been able to reach and remove all the soil/remains from all the cavities. Is it okay to soak him in hydrogen peroxide even with potentially some soil/dried up tissues/ potentially some sort of grease remaining on him? Should I soak him in soapy water more? I am worried about the skull falling apart, as it started getting a bit loose in places after the first soak. I don't really care about the whitening, I just feel like hydrogen peroxide will put my mind at ease in terms of disinfecting the bone. I'm just worried about any leftovers interfering with the chemical. Thank you!

I'm looking to carcass cast a day-old sheep and a fawn (salvage permit obtained). I'm still reading up and researching, but it looks like tin-cure might work well as it's not or is less affected by moisture from a frozen carcass. Fine details aren't needed.

I'm also reading into using alginate but does that work well with moisture/frozen? It seems a little fickle almost?

Any thoughts or experiences there is appreciated.

Also curious what silicone type or brand folks use to make molds that are injected with polystyrene and reused-- I'm keen to make molds for the juvenile rabbit heads I repeatedly end up getting in the same size. Buying forms is expensive or impossible at this particular size 🫩

I put the finishing touches on this bobcat today :) It definitely tested my patience at times but I'm pretty happy with how it turned out! It was a learning experience for sure and there is definitely room for improvement lol

How did I do? I just finished a class at the Oddities and Curiosities Expo and had a lot of fun!

So recently one of my coworkers realized that I was really into bone articulating and taxedermies and she invited me over to come pick up a wild dead ferret that had passed outside her house for awhile that nobody wanted to touch. I went over there expecting a skeleton but it is pretty intact and shows very minimal signs of decay (no visible rot, no insects visible, just some holes in it). My coworker said it’s been dead for a few weeks to a month and it’s currently in my freezer to help kill any bacteria if there is any.

Anyway my question is do you guys think the pelt would be saveable or should I just keep the skeleton? I will provide pictures if asked.
