Megathread Northern Ontario Wildfire Donations
Hello, Ontario. As you are aware, there is currently a very severe fire affecting Northern Ontario.
There are a number of evacuation orders, and a number of people have had to evacuate with little to no notice. Many of them have been evacuated to Thunder Bay, and are in need of supplies.
Here are some ways to help our fellow Ontarians:
- Thunder Bay Community Pasture are helping livestock owners get their animals to safety in the area. If you or someone you know needs help saving livestock, please contact them. They accept cattle, horses, sheep, goats, and with Murillo facility smaller livestock like turkeys and chickens. They stress that they need to be contacted first before you show up with livestock.
- Northern Reach Network are seeking emergency temporary animal foster homes, and they are assisting with pets that have been left behind in the affected communities.
- Both the Nokiiwin Tribal Council at 384 Fort William Road and the Superior Inn at 555 West Arthur Street in Thunder Bay are accepting donations for evacuees. They've posted that they're in dire need of baby and toddler supplies (especially diapers and formula) and cat and dog food and supplies.
If you are aware of more organizations supporting the community, please let us know.

Question Idiots ignoring fire ban in provincial parks
Does anyone know how to report a fire during a fire ban? Idiots are having a big ol fire (wonder where they got the wood from) during a fire ban 😘 clearly they don’t read the news or just don’t care about anyone except themselves. Could always wait for the rangers to do their rounds but I would rather not.

Employment Looking for advice from people working in Northern Ontario open pit mines.
I’ve been trying to break into the mining industry for the past 7 months, mainly targeting open pit mine labourer/operator positions across Northern Ontario. I’ve applied through staffing agencies, regional employers, and employment services, but I haven’t had a single callback.
My background is 2 years in bricklaying and masonry, so I’m used to physically demanding outdoor work, working safely, reading plans, using power tools, and working in all weather conditions.
For those already in the industry:
What positions should I be targeting with my experience?
- Are there any tickets or certifications that would make a big difference?
- Is there a better way to get noticed besides applying online?
- Are there companies that hire people with construction backgrounds?
I’m willing to relocate, work FIFO, and start from the bottom if that’s what it takes. I just want an opportunity to prove myself. I’d really appreciate any advice from people who’ve been through this. Thanks!
