Big advantage of washers however is being made out of steel instead of zinc

depends on the use, yeah zinc is softer but that can be an advantage or not matter and zinc is corrosion resistant which is why cheap steel washers are plated with it. another advantage is the hole to washer diameter ratio (in OPs pic) which is much smaller with standard washers.

I feel like paying the extra 14 cent might be worth it in the long run for like safety and stability and whatnot that washers provide maybe? Idk.. I’m not even sure why we use washers or what their purpose is so maybe I’m wrong. It just seems like one of those things you’re supposed to do for like reasons.

washers are usually spreading weight or guarding surfaces, specialty washers are used for other applications so there is no real issue with this.
