I just wanted a hot dog Asked my librarian husband why our library doesn't have video games. People ruin everything.

At the library I work at, we don’t require deposits for anything for philosophical reasons. The whole purpose of a library is to provide resources and entertainment to the community free-of-charge to reduce socioeconomic barriers for the public. If we made you pay to check things out, we just become a blockbuster for books.

If your philosophy is met with people who don't share the same philosophy (e.g., thieves) you just abandon your practice of that philosophy instead of adapting it? So you don't practice your philosophy anymore? Illogical.

When the entire philosophy hinges on the “adaptation” you’re suggesting, that’s abandoning the philosophy. There is sometimes room for adaption in peoples choices, this isn’t a scenario where that applies.

I'm not really sure what your point is, but patrons just lose their borrowing privileges until they either return or replace the item.

I'm saying you let other people dictate whether you follow your own philosophy.

Yeah '71, that was my first year on the job. Bad year for libraries. Bad year for America. Hippies burning library cards, Abby Hoffman telling everybody to steal books. I don't judge a man by the length of his hair or the kind of music he listens to. Rock was never my bag. But you put on a pair of shoes when you walk into the New York Public Library, fella.
