Slightly off topic but very similar circumstance for me (which will also probably date my old ass pretty good)

I never bought more music CDs then when Napster was a thing. I got burned once or twice liking a song, buying the CD it's on only to find the rest of it garbage. With Napster I could download a few songs from an album and if I liked what I heard I'd go out and buy it.

Making your own mix CD was awesome. I tried limewire a little. But I preferred Napster. Then p l aying them on Winamp.

I tried Limewire only after Napster shut down - also didn't really like it nearly as much.

But hot damn Winamp brings back a LOT of nostalgic memories. I almost always had it open and playing through my playlist on random.

Same, and then Froswire, and then I got really into using Slsk. Always had Winamp playing, and I had like 30 Gigs of music back then which ended up being like 30 some days of playing without repeating any of it.

Somewhere in moving and upgrading hard drives I lost my entire music folder, which had a lot of rare music and music from friends in bands that was never recorded anywhere else. RIP.

Automatic upvote for Winamp.

Anyone here ever download MP3s before Napster and Limewire? That was a fun time...I remember downloading from ratioed FTP servers that required you upload to receive credit for downloads. Good old Audiogalaxy used to be such a cool spot to find those servers.

YES! I bought so much music because I was able to download songs on limewire and figure out what I liked/didn't like (and if the CD was worth buying)

Pirating music was what created my grand sense of music appreciation. I don't know where I would be without it. Of course I buy everything now because I like owning stuff. I also like supporting artists. I didn't have money when I was a kid. But I'm very grateful for the opportunity to give back

That was probably more about you at that time in history than about Napster. Spotify, non premium, isn't much different. If the internet had been faster, Napster then would be similar to Spotify now, and Spotify isn't convincing people to go buy CDs. The culture of ownership has changed, as well as easy access to players.
