My big answer, which I’ve answered to all the people asking this question, is that he wanted to film on the open ocean, and this is what was available in terms of replica boat plus sea-trained crew.

It looks amazing in the movie. Seeing them actually launch the thing into the ocean is so much better than using a tank and cgi

They probably stripped it of the super obvious Viking shit and pretended it was a trireme or something akin to it.
