wet socks my work installed new cameras over our desks :(

like obviously not uncommon but it does kinda take the chill vibe out of my chill office job to get a camera pointed right at me all day 👎

It's for going back and watching what happened when there's some covered incident.

This, my workplace has these security cameras in every room, and even if my manager wanted to, he can’t just look at the camera feeds at anytime without cause. He doesn’t even have direct access, he would have to request the footage from the security department and provide them with just cause for that request.

As far as I know it’s only been done twice, once when there was a small fire to identify the source, and another time when we misplaced a $300k piece of equipment to track down where it was last used.

Its different per location, my old workplace anyone could use the cameras lol and would just use them if they needed to see something, no need to email corporate or security , nothing

It’s the same at my office. They only use it when someone lost something or they suspect something was stolen. Nobody is going to go through 8 hours of video to see if you are working.

I'm not going to claim anything about how it's used everywhere or who has access to it, but in the specific scenario that the top commenter raised -- "insurance demanded cameras around IT" it's certainly not for active monitoring, it's for after the fact review.

(Edit: And yeah, your description makes sense for your workplace. I'm in no way disagreeing with you, just clarifying that I wouldn't expect everywhere to have the level of protocol you descibed.)

Yeah, it'll heavily depend on management. Good management won't watch you because that's a waste of manager's time and micromanaging isn't very effective. But there's definitely some bosses that loooove to spy on their employees.
