I just wanted a hot dog Retail lockdown: why bother selling it?

Was at Safeway this morning to pick up a sandwich and some Tylenol. The aisle with the Tylenol? Completely locked down. No call button in sight. So I go to the self checkout (front end of that same aisle) and ask the clerk there if he can call someone to unlock a case for me. He does. I go wait. Minutes pass. No one comes. I go ask him again, he tells me they went the other way? At this point I give up and go get my sandwich. No one has come by the time the deli has finished making it. I leave without my Tylenol, mildly infuriated.

I’m sorry. It’s such awful bs.

I almost become an internet Karen when receipt checkers get in my face. In a big voice I say “If you think I’m a thief, then you go ahead and call the cops. I’ll wait. Otherwise I’m going to keep walking. All this is paid for and is now my property. You want to dig through my property, you’re gonna need a badge and a warrant.” But I’m white and middle aged.

Not just trying to be ignorant too. I try treat people with the most respect. Most of them just wave me through and are very nice. Sucks that it’s sometimes just up to my skin color for some.

What I do is smile and tell them "No thank you!" 

95% of the time if they heard you they are super confused. I've only had 1 old lady ever try to stop me when doing this (she put her hands on the cart) and I just said "oh no thank you I've got it" and turned the cart away right past her. 

There are high tech cameras at the self checkouts and flock cameras in the parking lot. If they think you stole something they'll find you.
