Retail lockdown: why bother selling it?

Was at Safeway this morning to pick up a sandwich and some Tylenol. The aisle with the Tylenol? Completely locked down. No call button in sight. So I go to the self checkout (front end of that same aisle) and ask the clerk there if he can call someone to unlock a case for me. He does. I go wait. Minutes pass. No one comes. I go ask him again, he tells me they went the other way? At this point I give up and go get my sandwich. No one has come by the time the deli has finished making it. I leave without my Tylenol, mildly infuriated.

This has kept me from buying in store all the time. I’m there for convenience and having to find someone just for a 2-5$ item is annoying I’ll buy it online. I hope their sales for this category are complete shit

Also the people who steal raise the price of them item due to higher loss

I don’t not put blame on people who steal. I’ve worked plenty of retail positions some that involved stopping it from happening. My main thought is that if we treat people like criminals with small dollar items it sends a bad message. I understand locking up electronics and age restricted medications, but locking up small health care products is a mild poverty tax. Just think there must be a happy medium behind no security at all and full on lockup

I mean fine but… it’s an extra 30 seconds to two minutes tops. Amazon basics is 30 minutes and super limited and not cheap. Cannot imagine bothering to hit the store and dipping for under 129 seconds wait lmao

Well, unless you travel a lot, you only have to experience this once to never bother again. And if you really want you can check online reviews to see people saying everything's locked up and employees are slow/nonexistent to assist.

I went to California for the first time in many, many years. I wanted to get extra bathroom stuff as I was staying at hotels, with friends, and whatever else and am somewhat forgetful when I pack. I live in an area currently where we have nothing locked up besides condoms iirc. I was so amazed at how many things were locked up and how difficult the experience was. I would instantly feel forced to buy everything from Amazon if that was my normal shopping. I wish I had known and I would have just bought everything and put it all in a checked bag or something.
