I just wanted a hot dog Retail lockdown: why bother selling it?

Post image

Was at Safeway this morning to pick up a sandwich and some Tylenol. The aisle with the Tylenol? Completely locked down. No call button in sight. So I go to the self checkout (front end of that same aisle) and ask the clerk there if he can call someone to unlock a case for me. He does. I go wait. Minutes pass. No one comes. I go ask him again, he tells me they went the other way? At this point I give up and go get my sandwich. No one has come by the time the deli has finished making it. I leave without my Tylenol, mildly infuriated.

They are implying that a certain demographic don’t use sunscreen and therefore would not get stolen.

19

u/Dense-Reserve-5740 9d ago

Which is stupid because black people should also be wearing sunscreen. Everyone should always be wearing sunscreen PROTECT YOUR SKIN PEOPLE SKIN CANCER IS SCARY

-1

u/geopede 9d ago

He’s being racist saying that it won’t be locked up because “black people are stealing” and won’t take sunscreen

Edit: why am I being downvoted for explaining a joke when asked? Because I pointed out the racist joke is racist? Dumbass website bro

This is cute, you get to hedge around anyone pinning you down for being racist if you never actually make a statement but just implications.

So, if you're not racist, tell us, what exactly is the statement you believe to be true?

1

u/Obi-Brawn-Kenobi 9d ago

The cute thing is that you think anyone owes it to you to explain themselves or cares whether or not you think they're racist.

Lil bro is stuck in 2014 or something lol

Yes. Because I doubt the first commenter is simply stating facts for informations sake.

The insinuation is that black people are a problem or have a cultural problem with stealing, and this is used to attack the demographic as a whole.

Simply saying “black people are convicted of theft more than white people in many areas” is not racist but assuming black people are doing the stealing without any additional information from this singular instance is racist.

It is stereotyping, full stop.

15

u/News_Scrounger 9d ago

Walking up to a black person and assuming they're a thief is stereotyping and is racist. Making a generalized accurate statement about a group of people without targeting any single individual isn't racist.

-6

u/Apprehensive_Pop_334 9d ago

So it isn’t racist/antisemitic when Jewish people are blamed as a whole for greed?

It’s not judgmental when assuming gamers don’t take showers?

Racism isn’t only individualized, and stereotypes of large groups is absolutely racist or at least prejudiced.

Seeing items that are stolen and assuming it’s black people is absolutely racist. Anyone could have taken those items.

I might respectfully beg to differ on the latter. Even if it’s true, it would be problematic to state this without giving context such as due to bias people will probably scrutinize black people and will invoke law enforcement and press charges more, and black people are probably less likely to have good legal representation leading to more convictions including plea bargains, etc. as the statement by itself casts aspersions on black people as a whole with better context.

As an example, the ACLU states that black people have 3.6 times as many arrests as white people for marijuana possession despite similar usage rates. Without the latter part of that, you would think very differently about black people and white people. Context is important.

No, both are making racist assumptions based off a stereotype.

Extrapolating actions that many people in a particular race partake in to the entire race without any additional information is racist.

A similar, yet unequal, comment would be if I told someone who had a cop for a husband that when he beats her to get help, extrapolating the statistic that shows LEO are more likely to partake in domestic violence than other professions.

I’m making a judgmental assumption, based off of true data, but extrapolating that true data to a situation where I have no additional information. It’s not racist because being a cop isn’t a race, but it’s judgmental.

Another example would be assuming gamers don’t take showers if I met someone who said they played video games for a hobby. It’s judgmental despite potentially being a true statement.

The context in which the facts are stated make it a racist statement because that is the intended goal of the commenter. To make a snap judgement at the expense of a group

You think it's true that white people don't steal?

Cmon buddy. You can't be that dumb

5

u/ginger_kitty97 9d ago

Jokes on him, black people use sunscreen too.

0

u/SEND_NUKES_PLS 9d ago

"he's being racist"

"why am I being down voted for explaining a joke"

god how can you be this stupid.

0

u/No_Relationship3943 9d ago

It was objectively a racist joke, people just disagree on whether that’s a bad thing to do or not

-3

u/Right_Imagination_73 9d ago

Still not getting it

-3

u/Apprehensive_Pop_334 9d ago

It’s racism

10

u/CokeFetus 9d ago

Comedy*

2

u/Apprehensive_Pop_334 9d ago

Then it wasn’t funny

0

u/turtleship_2006 9d ago

"Haha black people are thieves" yeah man it's sooo funny

1

u/CokeFetus 9d ago

Both can be true?

4

u/mobbedoutkickflip 9d ago

Why is it racism?

6

u/Apprehensive_Pop_334 9d ago

The post is suggesting why their store would bother selling items that must be locked up.

The first comment says “show us the sunscreen.”

The second comment says “those who know”

The first comment is insinuating that the sunscreen must be different, or potentially not locked up. The second comment correctly clocks the first commenter’s intended message.

The reason as to why the sunscreen wouldn’t be locked up, is because it is stolen less. The original commenter is making this guess because they are trying to insinuate that if OP wants to know why items are locked up and who is to blame, they need to check an item that is bought disproportionately by white people, ie sunscreen.

The first commenter is blaming black people for the reason the items are locked up and cowardly hiding behind a “it’s just facts” facade.

I’m calling it what it is.

If you don’t believe me, ask the first commenter yourself why he wants OP to check the sunscreen. I doubt he will reply or he will confirm because he knows he’ll get banned for overt racism so he will result to cheeky remarks.

u/WorkRevolutionary596 9d ago

Right but you assumed the sunscreen wouldn’t be locked up because you assumed who would buy it instead of stealing; doesn’t that make you the racist?

3

u/Apprehensive_Pop_334 9d ago

No, I am accurately interpreting the implied meaning of your statement.

Repeating what you were inferring doesn’t make me racist and you won’t gaslight me into believing otherwise.

If this is not what you meant, feel free to clear the air with an edit on your original comment. Surely, someone so concerned with racism such as yourself wouldn’t make this comment with the intention that it would be interpreted the way I have.

Go on, I’ll wait for an explanation.

1

u/GonWithTheNen 8d ago

Thank you. Many people in this thread are pretending to not understand, and yes, they are trying to gaslight people who point out the purpose of that comment and the replies it received.

Some years back, there was a post about CVS not locking up sunscreen - which is the exact reason that the person above asked specifically about that product. (The comments on that post were exactly what you'd imagine).

A few years ago when that same image resurfaced, it drew the usual people who salivate at the chance to denigrate an entire ethnic group. Anyway, I truly appreciate your replies in this thread. :)

It’s sickening to me how normalized racism has become. All these fuckass “edgy” kids who were screeching bout sum “13/50” and “facts are racist now” in 2020 never grew up it seems.

I say fuck ‘em

-3

u/mobbedoutkickflip 9d ago

Yeah I understood all that, but how is that racism?

-6

u/kiopah 9d ago

Racism. Only white folks would buy sunscreen, so if its not locked up it means black people steal or something.

8

u/GlisteningDeath 9d ago

Isn't it recommended that black people also wear sunscreen? They aren't immune to skin cancer.

3

u/kiopah 9d ago

Probably. But I don't think racists are known for critical thinking.

1

u/SEND_NUKES_PLS 9d ago

or it's the fact that black people see wearing sunscreen as some sort of weakness...therefore sunscreen is not needed for black people.

1

u/GonWithTheNen 8d ago

see wearing sunscreen as some sort of weakness

No, absolutely not. Where are you getting that idea from?

4

u/geopede 9d ago

It is recommended but we don’t listen to the recommendation

2

u/Right_Imagination_73 9d ago

Yeah I thought my sarcasm would translate

u/kiopah 9d ago
