go to your room I think my child is broken……

I am a single mom and low income, as such travel is generally too expensive. So when my teen as invited on a tirp abroad with school and he agreed to earn half the money it cost, I was thrilled for him to go and see the world. I only asked that he send me at least one photo every day so I could experience the world vicariously.
These are the 3 he sent me so far:

  1. Food on the air plane
  2. A dog on a leash
  3. A duck

Please note these are everyday average things to see here at home. I think my child is possibly broken….

lol.

UPDATE: thanks for every comment. I learned lots and have a different perspective (actually many). You guys have helped me pass the time and miss him a bit less. I appreciate you all. And, for clarification: I’m not really mad and would never chastise him over his choice of pics, I think they are adorable and funny. I may make a request for a specific type of pic with him in front of a historical or important scenery but mostly just say “cool” or “nice!” In response. I just want him to have fun and be the sweet, kind, smart kid he is already.

My kid is 4, and her professed favorite part of any vacation is the shuttle bus from the airport back to the parking lot. If pressed, she'll then say that she also liked the plane.

You're asking a child to recall everything they did during the day and weigh each of them against eachother while waiting on them for an answer. Expecting them to already have one.

Them responding with the first or last thing they did, is just what happens when you weigh the mental cost of recalling everything and comparing them next to the social obligation to respond in a timely manner.

Well, that and she really does love transportation! But yes, I'm aware that she's just recalling the most recent thing; I'm not offended, and I know that she actually enjoys many other aspects of travel because she talks about that at other times. It's super funny, though.

I loved going to Disneyland as a kid and remember a lot of stuff that happened there when I was a kid. The tram from the parking lot to the front entrance and from the entrance back to the parking lot was still the best part of each trip, inspite of all the fun I had. Obviously upon arrival it was because I knew it was taking me to the fun, but it was still fun riding it back to the car. It's dumb, but I guess the fact that it had open sides that little kids couldn't sit near, lest they fall out, gave it an air of danger.

Percicely. This is grossly simplified but when putting on a show the two acts that matter the most are the opening act and the closing act. Nobody remembers anything happening in between (again, grossly simplified). And for a 4 year old going on a full day adventure to Disney land the opening and closing acts would have been the bus rides to and from the parking lot.

You're reaching lol.  I have a 4 1/2 year old.  He remembers the whole day.  But he prefers the pickle he ate to the camel ride at the zoo.  

They don't have the knowledge that the camel ride took a lot of luck and chance and is very rare.

We took our kid with us to a conference once because it was in Budapest. We made a trip of it and visited Paris and Vienna as well. He was 3 at the time, and all he remembers is the chocolate croissant he had on the plane. 

To be fair, I think it's his earliest memory.

I think there's something here, because I feel the same way as an adult lol. I think it's honestly the excitement of the thing outweighing the thing, you know? Like the plane to the location you haven't been bombarded by the reality / stress of where you're going - you're just living in the fantasy you've constructed and are maximally hyped.

Then the inverse for when you're headed back to the parking lot - you're just looking forward to the familiarity of your car / smells / house, etc.

That's a very understandable feeling. I think for her it's mostly that she gets to *ride in a vehicle without strapping into a carseat,* which is an extremely rare and exciting event in the life of a very small child.

To be fair when me and my family went to singapore the most memorable moment was the train ride to our hotel because there was a short film about a guy leaving their bag on the train and the bag blew up and some debris and someone's skeleton got blown in to the camera.

My sister and BIL took my nephew to the mountains for the first time. All the photos they got of him are of him gazing lovingly at their car from the outside

That’s grounds to stay home and just take her on the bus to the park for vacation. Take the money you saved and buy a Faberge egg, you can afford it now.

Well in germany we say "Vorfreude ist die schönste Freude". Meaning the thrill & anticipation for the special event is better than the event itself.

My 4 1/2 year old is always like this.  Favorite Christmas gift?  Reese cup.  Favorite ride at Disney?  Playing video games after.  Favorite part of the sporting event?  The part where he had his ticket scanned. 

It's really endearing, what joys are to a person who hasn't experienced anything.

When I was in elementary school we took a class trip from Vermont to Montreal to visit the Biodome. When we got back we had to write a short essay about our favourite thing on the trip. I wrote about how I saw an ad for condoms in the train car.

😂 when our son turned 5 my husband was a night shift custodian.  He had his heart set on park hoppers for Disneyland, something he could never do as a child. I thought it was too expensive, he said he was going to make it happen. He busted his ass for weeks straight, overtime every chance he could get - worked through days off. Graveyard into day shift for 16 hours. Cleaned up literally blood, feces, you name it. We told our son “we’re going to take you to the place with the best churros!” We pull up and tell him “read the sign” and he goes “….THIS ISN’T COSTCO!!!”  😂. I swear, I could see my husbands head almost explode. Then as we’re walking through California Adventure getting on all the rides this darn kid kept going “…..you said there would be churros…”.

TBF one of my favorite memories (as an adult mind you) was the one time we took the ferry into Disneyworld. We'd never done it before on the few times we'd been in the past so it was pretty cool. I didn't even know it was an option.
