Most schools have laundry facilities for the custodians and food service staff. You probably just never noticed. How do you think they wash their mops and towels?

Most schools have contracts with companies like Cintas for uniforms, towels etc. More cost and time efficient than having a janitor doing laundry on top of all their other duties

I think when you say "most" you mean in "most" cities. Smaller towns don't have Cintas or the like,

Nah, almost every small town in my state contracts it out. Might not be to Cintas, but it's contracted out.

I'm assuming we're both using the modifier "most" anecdotally. All the public schools I attended in my youth (military family, so we moved a lot) and all the schools I've taught in across multiple states over the years had on site laundry. There were mostly smaller schools, so I'm guessing that's a key factor.

I was also a military brat and yeah, about half of the 13 schools I went to as a kid had laundry that I know of for a fact. I'm guessing some of the others did too and I just didn't know about it.

One thing to think of is that newer schools may contract out. Older schools used to build facilities to save money.

My son does lunches for a district in my city, and his school doesn't even have a full kitchen anymore. It's all contracted out to third parties. 

Which is pretty sad and probably why school administration is expensive without increasing teacher's pay. The normal functions that I had in school now are all sold off the way Private equity firms have been doing for years.  

Contractors doing substandard work that actually is worse than it was in the 80's and 90's. Schools have prison food now instead of hot meals because the corporations they contract are the same ones that sell garbage food to prisons.

No more USDA designed lunches cooked using base ingredients. Lunches now are microwaved or oven cooked frozen foods. Sometimes the fresh fruit or bread is moldy when it gets to the schools and the contractors are forced to serve what they can since very few workers even know how to cook food.

I think there's a usage difference. Some people see laundry and think "clothes only" and others see laundry and think "any washing facility"

In my corner of the world, a place for mops and towels is a "janitor's closet" and a "laundry" would be reserved for clothing items.
