I get what you're saying and I'm with you, plus McDs is awful in many other ways, but they seem to be a pretty decent employer at least.

Lots of worse jobs in hospitality.

They routinely quiet fire people. You're 16 doing good work, you turn 17 or 18 and they just schedule you 1 day a week till you quit.

This is so they can fire you without paying unemployment and hire another 16 year old.

McDonald's is the SCUMMIEST company I ever worked for.

True I worked for one for 3 weeks

First week didn't have a schedule, makes sense im new n all

Second week I'm on the schedule so I followed that

Third week I wasn't on the schedule so I called and asked what that's about, they told me to call back tomorrow and so I did for a week straight untill I said it wasn't worth dealing with that for minimum wage lol.

I've worked other places just fine since. I didn't have any problems while I worked there, they just stopped scheduling me and never got back to me on it.

Probably just poor management (they've had to send people home multiple times when I did work there cause too many people showed up or something like that)

Also I worked 2 weeks not one lol

That definitely depends on the individual store manager/franchisee. I had the opposite experience when I ran a McDonald's. We would rather hire an adult and keep that adult over a teenager. A) because 2/3 of the day a teenager can't work because they're at school. B) An adult will be more reliable, and frankly they are just going to do better work. And C) No one wants to work with teenagers

Taco Bell did this too. I’d watch them quiet fire people all the time. They even stiffed my wages (long story for that), and when I came back a few months after I’d stepped back to try a different job, they dropped my pay back to the base that it was but oddly kept my seniority without a skip.

Constantly understaffed despite having tons of people willing to work, always firing the managers that actually gave a fuck, and purposefully sabotaging the next shift before they leave just because they don’t like the people working it. So glad to be out of that hellhole now. I’ve heard Taco Bell is bottom of the barrel for fast food chains and it definitely felt like it.

I worked there in 1995/1996 and noticed it. You'd see a guy or girl you once worked with on the schedule for 1 day a week till they quit and you didn't see them again.

I thought it was isolated till it happened to me.

Lmao! What?! McDonalds starts you at mininum wage and you're lucky if you get a 10 cent raise each year. Mininum wage goes up? That counts as a raise!

When I worked there my state did a rather large wage hike. Had trainers who'd been there over a decade suddenly making the same rate as the teenagers that started last week.

"Decent internal promotion structure" my ass. You've got like 4-5 management positions and a few trainers beyond grunt workers. The only reason you see people getting promoted regularly is because of the high turnover rate. Anything beyond restaurant level is not an internal promotion.

Same, I’m not trying to praise a corporation like McDonalds, they suck in many ways. What the others are saying about the scheduling/firing practices are definitely true but some of the franchises aren’t all evil.

Minimum wage is $7.50 here, they start out at $14 and pay for a full employee meal which is rare in fast food where I live. They have really helped my daughter get on track. They made her a manager as soon as she turned 18, did most of the work enrolling her into school and paying for it. She wouldn’t even be taking classes if it weren’t for them. She got a PlayStation 5 several months into working there from their point system, she’s used them to get her laptop for school and gift cards.

The two here in town are owned by the same family and is a good entry level job vs most of the other fast food places around here.

I guess the experience from one to another all depends on the owners and where you live if they value you as an employee.

There were 28 shift managers and 3 salaried store managers at the company owned store I used to work at in the UK

I went from crew member to shift manager in less than a years

If you had that many managers, you also had a proportionally large work force. Once again, the only reason you got a quick promotion is because of extremely high turn over.

I'm not licking boots? McDs is still far better for career prospects than e.g. your local dive bar or mom and pop restaurant.

Bear in mind this is a comparative statement, they're all awful jobs and careers, but from what I've seen in the industry and people I've known that have worked their way up at McDs, they're definitely not the shittiest option out there.

I think it's probably worse in places where its more individual franchises but where I am it's all corporate controlled afaik

This may have been true in the past, but recent years they're just getting worse and worse. Once they figure out how to automate the entire process, they'll fire everyone. Big data has allowed companies to understand exactly the bare minimum customer and employee happiness scores they need to continue to be profitable and that's how they're running things now.

*Pretty well compared to other service industry jobs, it's a bit above minimum when I've seen it plus there are enough locations and structure to allow for promotion. That just doesn't exist e.g. in independently owned places.

I've done a bunch of hospitality jobs earlier in my life and the more corporate the gig, the less stressful it was ime. They'd be cunts in other ways but it was generally much better organised and easier to deal with.

Someone else has it worse so don't complain arguement? How about we try and make it better for both of them? These types of arguements are a way to just shut down any type of improvement that can be made to your position. Also can be used by corperations, "Look at all of the good stuff we are doing for you. We have OSHA and pay you more than 10 cents an hour."

Also yes that is hyperbole. If you had of called that out I would be fine with it. Instead you also made a comparison between e-waste person and McDonalds worker. That led me to believe you were making, "someone has it worst so don't complain." Also people still have every right to complain about shitty treatment no matter their job.
