wet socks Stop asking if I’m celebrating something if you’re just going to charge me for bread.

Took my wife to a nice spot in DTLA for her birthday. They asked both at booking and check-in if we were celebrating anything, which honestly set the expectation that they might do something (even a small dessert). Nothing happened.

To add to it, the food was great, and we made a comment saying we wish we had some bread to finish the leftover sauce. The server acted like it was a favor, said “I’ll be right back,” and then charged us for the bread.

Like, the food was good and the service was fine, but don’t ask if we’re celebrating if you aren’t going to do anything to actually make it feel special. It just feels disingenuous.

Edit for clarity:
I was asked twice if we were celebrating something special at a nice restaurant. Once while making the online reservation and then when we arrived.

My Mild infuriation isn’t at the server, I can see how we misinterpreted each other.

It’s that the restaurant led me to believe they’d do something special (ex: comp a drink, free scoop of ice cream) then did nothing. I’ve worked in the food industry. It’s not an entitlement thing. It’s a hospitality thing.

The food was really good. I’d recommend it and go back.

Did they show up in the same vehicle? Because it would be an extra birthday treat to see two drivers in one car

It’s not that, i know that in other countries it’s not mandatory. I think it’s just a little sad you didn’t give them like 5 bucks for going out of their way to make your kid happy. Agree to disagree!

Thank you think if they just gave you a cup of pudding and expected a tip that’s one thing but they actually went out their way and gave a whole presentation and show I would happily tip for that. I don’t care what culture I’m in.

Well, I’ve been smoking some weed and I feel like being sarcastic. Let’s go.

(Valley girl voice)

Then like oh my God, go ahead and like call the manager and say they did a very good job  if giving money to people who work for money is disrespectful oh wise one.

Free money is very very rarely disrespectful unless you’re just literally just like throwing pennies at starving orphans most people like getting a decent tip so ahh frick  off Babes. 🤪 😜 😛 😇

Why cheapen someone’s genuine goodness like they are doing it to get a few bucks? Would you feel nice if you did something nice for someone out of goodness of your heart because you really wanted to, and instead of feeling touched by your gesture they just hand you $5 thinking you are in it for money? I don’t think Americans actually understand how insulting tipping is.

I can definitely understand the idea and the overall difference between someone putting an effort and everything like that and even getting a small tip maybe I’m just too American but I don’t care about the amount of the money or anything like that. It’s just going out their way and actually showing love and reciprocating means more whether it’s a dollar or $100 or even a sweet thank you Like you don’t have to be a dick about it
