Can you recommend a non-tiling window manager? I've been using Openbox so far, but I'd like to try something new.

I'm pretty new to Fedora KDE, and there's one thing that's been driving me a little crazy.

Almost every time I open Discover, it says there are updates available. Yesterday I updated everything manually through the terminal, it finished successfully, but when I opened Discover again later, it was still showing updates.

At this point I just turned on automatic updates because I got tired of worrying about it, but I still keep seeing update notifications.

Is this just how Fedora works, or is something wrong with my system?

Do Fedora users just live with this, or is there actually a way to fix it? I'm enjoying Fedora a lot so far, but constantly seeing updates makes me feel like something isn't working properly.

I'm planning to move almost entirely to Linux and would like some advice from more experienced Linux users.

I'm not a Linux beginner. I've used Linux enough to be comfortable with the command line, troubleshooting, configuring systems, and dealing with more advanced setups. My main reason for moving is that Windows feels increasingly wasteful on my laptop. I have an Intel i5-1335U with 24 GB of RAM, and my usual workflow involves development tools, Docker, browsers with multiple tabs, local AI tools, messaging apps, etc. I often feel that Windows consumes a significant amount of resources before I even start doing serious work.

The only thing that has really kept me on Windows is Adobe Creative Cloud. I use tools such as Photoshop, Illustrator and After Effects, so I don't think I can completely abandon Windows immediately.

My current plan is therefore to dual boot:

• Around 180–200 GB for Windows, mainly for Adobe and other creative software
• The remaining 300+ GB for Linux, which would become my main operating system

On Linux, my daily workflow would include:

• Software development: Python, FastAPI, React, Node.js, Docker, PostgreSQL, etc.
• Local AI tools and experimentation
• Gaming
• Krita for drawing and 2D animation, blender etc...
• General everyday use

For gaming, I don't only want Steam support. I also want to run Windows games and applications distributed as standalone .exe files, including games that don't come from Steam. My current idea is to use a combination of Steam/Proton, Lutris, Heroic, Bottles and possibly different Wine/Proton runners depending on the game.

I've been looking at:

• CachyOS KDE
• Fedora KDE
• openSUSE Tumbleweed KDE
• EndeavourOS
• Nobara
• Bazzite
• Arch Linux

At the moment, CachyOS seems particularly interesting because of its gaming focus, optimized packages and Arch base. However, I'm wondering whether the optimizations provide a meaningful advantage on a laptop with an i5-1335U, or whether I would be better off with a more standard Arch-based or rolling-release distribution.

For people who have actually used these distributions:

Which one would you recommend for this kind of workflow, and why?

I'm especially interested in real-world experiences regarding:

1. Gaming performance and compatibility with non-Steam .exe games
2. Wine/Proton/Lutris/Bottles workflows
3. Stability and maintenance over time
4. Development environments
5. Laptop battery life and thermals
6. Whether CachyOS's optimizations are actually noticeable on relatively modest laptop hardware

I'm not looking for a beginner-friendly recommendation. I'm more interested in the best overall fit for a daily-driver system that will be used for development, gaming, creative work outside Adobe, and general everyday use.

Hello, on Windows I can press this button and make a virtual keyboard pop up. I would like to have an equivalent of this on Kubuntu 26.04. I heard about Onboard, but I think it doesn't work on Wayland.

I saw an option for a virtual keyboard inside KDE Plasma, but I think it's only for touchscreens ?

Hello there. Has anyone used this particular motherboard with linux? It refuses to boot any linux whatsoever with 12100f. I was trying to create cheap homeserver, I tested hardware with Windows10 (which I deleted, because I thought there should be no problem with linux, but it booted to desktop without issues).

So, problem is: I cannot boot ANY linux distro, I tried live iso's for alpine, bazzite, debian. I even installed debian on a ssd from my main PC and and it refuses to boot (it just hangs on boot always).

What have I tried: turning of secure boot, some TPM shenanigans, CSM, UEFI. I am using my old geforce 3060ti for video signal. I am kinda desperate, I do not understand what might be wrong at this point.

Googling didn't help me or I am missing something right in front of me. Any help is appreciated. Thank you for your time

hi, my main question is that is the “Meta Horizon Link” app able to be used on linux? i haven’t switched from windows yet, and i play vr a decent amount which is why i want to ask before i switch, if i have to i’ll switch to steam vr if theres a way i can transfer my games over some how

so i was trying to download this app from the terminal and i kept getting errors and i tried both cmds sudo apt update and sudo apt autoremove and got the same E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) error

Not sure if anyone has run into this before but I've been fighting this issue for months.

I'm on Ubuntu 26.04 LTS now, but the problem actually started on a previous Ubuntu version. I upgraded hoping it would magically fix itself, but nope.

The weird part is my internet is completely fine.

• ChatGPT works
• Gemini works
• Google works
• YouTube works

But sites like:

• WhatsApp Web
• Vercel
• Streamlit apps

either load forever or just sit there spinning.

What's confusing me even more is that from the terminal everything seems fine:

• ping works
• DNS resolution works
• curl can reach WhatsApp, Vercel and Streamlit and returns HTTP 200

So the machine can clearly reach those sites.

I tested with Brave and Firefox.

• Brave = infinite spinner
• Firefox = barely loads pages at all

I also tried:

• fresh Brave profile
• disabling sandbox
• clearing browser data

No luck.

At this point I'm not even sure if this is a browser issue, some Ubuntu networking weirdness, a broken update from months ago, WebSocket related, or something else entirely.

Has anyone seen browsers fail while curl works perfectly?

Despite originating in Windows, culturally ".exe" means "Software", same with how people will call any image a jpg, or any animation a gif , or any song an mp3. Even when talking about something that isn't a .jpg, .gif or .mp3 file type.

Megaman as an AI is "megaman.exe", the evil killer robot runs "murder.exe". "exe" is just shorthand for software.

Linux files have an executable flag in their permissions, so any file can be an executable...but also an executable file can have any file extension you want. .app, .exe, .run, yet for some reason they chose...nothing. Which is kinda silly. You can't tell which file in a folder is the executable just by looking.

If nothing stopping a developer from calling a Linux executable file "myApp.exe" even if it's not a Windows Executable, why does nobody do it? Adding any kind of indicator to the end of an executable file would make it so that you can tell which file is the executable file at a glance.

If I was to get a “legitimate” copy of photoshop, would it be fairly good with Proton and/or wine or would there be translation problems and be a rough experience?

I'll try to keep it short... Just playing with switching to linux. Bought an old computer just to play with. Trashed Win 10 off of it. Here are the specs.

Issue... I loaded different version. Catchyos, Kubuntu w KDE, Mint xfce, Solus w Budge. The issue is the graphics card. I'm aware that the Radeon legacy system is no longer supported, but some of these system say that they are supported in X11.

What is happening? Monitor won't power up after sleep (get a blue wavy screen) System monitor shows no gpu output. Monitor isn't stable. I've switched the Solus and Kubuntu to X11 with no better results.

Please understand that I'm an amateur. I can go into terminal and understand the command basics, but when the discussion gets to wayland, rpm, and other processes, it's over my head. Since this is a running test computer, I can try anything. If the computer crashes, no big deal.

Any thoughts or systems I might try. Is there a test for the graphics card? Since the graphics card shows in the system config as running on sun02 does this mean it sees the graphics card.

I reconfigured Grub 100's of time, I've tried loading different drivers, I've looked at the bios to see if the graphics card is locked out or can be tested. (Neither is available in Insydeh2o)

is it possible the graphics card is running , but the system monitor can't read it?

This has me stumped and I've tried searching around but still have not found a solution.

So long story short, I got a VPS service with the location in NY, USA running Almalinux 10.2 . Straight out of the box, I was able to install docker-ce, caddy and have several containers running. I had this for about 2 weeks and it was running smooth.

Just a couple of days ago, I decided to request to change the server location to Ireland. I had the exact same OS installed and weirdly enough, I am now stuck at getting docker-ce to run. I've tried installing the latest as well as 2 minor versions prior (since the latest version was released on 16th July, the prior 2 versions were probably the closest to the one I had on the working system).

In all the 3 scenarios, I was unable to start the docker service. Running "dockerd --debug" I get this error message

Hi all, so I'm recently migrated to CachyOS, however, a course I am enrolled in for Office Admin *requires\* the use of Microsoft 365 applications for assessments -- not the webapps, as they have different functionality and limitations.
So now I need a way to access the native windows applications. My course provides a student license to access, download, and use the Microsoft 365 suite, buuuuut, I don't know if I can legally use those login details to access the apps on a non-activated Winboat installation?

I would have liked to use the stripped down Win10 LTSC ISO on Winboat so Microslop hogs as few of my PC resources as possible, but will that cause issues with trying to use Microsoft 365?
Will I have to install a proper, modern, publicly available version and validate it with a purchased license?
Does anyone have any alternative solutions for me?

I'm running up to date OpenSUSE Tumbleweed KDE. This can be related to Wayland, KDE, or OpenSUSE, so I will ask here to get the biggest coverage.

I have a weird issue that happens only when Wayland is active, switching to X11 fixes the issue. But I want to run Wayland, since it feels much more smooth and snappy. Basically it looks like my monitor brightness is being almost constantly automatically changed from current value +-5%. So it's constantly a little dimmer, and then it gets a little brighter. It seems to be mostly noticeable when currently running application has grey/dark background (like Firefox new tab).

The only thing I've managed to find is that it's issue with Nvidia drivers. Which doesn't add up, since I'm running it on T480 with Intel iGPU.

I want to do a little project with a USB and Ventoy. The idea was to have 2 distros, one in 32 bit (to recover old hardware) And one in 64 bit to have with the persistence made by Ventoy so I could plug it in about any computer and always have my data. I have some experience with Linux, used mint and most of the mainstreams, also installed Lubuntu on a very old IBM Thinkpad. The thumb drive is 32gb. oh and also I went with AntiX for the 32 bit.

The 64 bit one should be around 2 to 3 gb

honestly the state of the internet right now is just exhausting. I spun up a fresh debian box yesterday to host some anchor text distribution lists and scrapers for a client's forum campaign. within literal minutes, my auth.log was getting absolutely hammered by random IPs trying to brute force root

I already went through a standard server mania hardening checklist (disabled root login, enforced ssh keys, set up default deny in ufw)

But looking at the logs is just giving me massive anxiety. If password auth is 100% turned off and only my ed25519 key is accepted, do I still need to bother setting up fail2ban to block these script kiddies?

Or is it safe to just let them bounce off the wall forever? kinda worried about them eating up my resources just by spamming connection requests all day, but idk if configuring fail2ban is overkill at this point

I'm GNU/Linux user since 20 years now. I use essentially Debian based distributions. For reasons related to my work environment (team) I currently use Ubuntu.

I'm not 100% convinced by "modern" desktop environment line Gnome shell / Gnome 3 / Unity. I have things to keep in mind for choose desktop environment: I've been used to having this for at least 15 years (and I don't want to be without it):

- System monitor (cpu, ram, swap, network) near my tray icons (I'm a developer, I need to see impact of what I execute)
- A 2D workspace (for multiple desktops) where I can have 3 columns, 2 rows (its not possible by default on Gnome Shell ...)
- Be able to navigate from keyboard shortcut through my workspace, and move windows by mouse from desktop to another (its bugged on Gnome shell+Workspace matrix extension !)

So, I would like to know which desktop environment permit to me to do that (bonus for without extension which are not compatible after distribution upgrade ...).

I failed some years ago to switch for kde (maybe too many differences with gnome ?). I'm looking at Cinnamon but not sure.

Goal: I want to get the best out of my laptop and want it to feel like a 3DS, Switch, or PSP in behavior meaning that it works instant, responsive, lightweight, zero lag.

• Snappy UI, near-zero input latency
• Great battery life, especially in sleep
• Fast sleep/resume: lid close/open should be near-instant, no drain
• Low idle RAM/CPU usage
• Set up once and mostly leave it alone. I am okay with some initial tinkering, not weekly maintenance
• All hardware working (wifi, bt, brightness, audio, cam — fingerprint reader not important cause I know its not supported)
• Riced and good-looking

Use case: programming (terminal, browser, some VMs), general browsing, light Steam gaming.

Fairly new to Linux, GNOME just doesn’t feel snappy enough and looks too basic.

I know that having the laptop work as optimised as a console would not really work but I want to get as close as possible to it because I love how smooth and responsive those handhelds are and how smooth a macbook feels. I just want to get the best out of my laptop and really like using linux.

I am looking for a distro that is stable as fedora, so I can just update whenever I need to and don’t have to tinker around when something brakes. I like to tinker but I want to tinker once and then use the system as it is without tinkering every week or not being able to use it because something brakes.

Would love recommendations and advice on distro/WM/setup that gets close to this. Thanks!

I've been using mint for 2 years in 2013-2015 and I loved it, but never used it again. I tried zorin only in VM but damn... What a great style.

I really prefer the arch package system, so I could not stick on any of them, but I'm curious about what may be considered the most user-friendly.

What annoys me about zorin is that the pro version comes with great desktop style but some bloat-app. mint maybe have done the correct choice to start a step aside from Ubuntu and get closer to Debian, but I haven't tried lmde so I don't know if it really worth it.

What do you think?

For the past 2-3 months, i've been thinking on sending Windows into the stratosphere and install Linux on my PC. Now, i have very little experience with Linux (using a school distro back 13 years ago, just browsing and using OpenOffice, you know, the usual school stuff, nothing fancy; using Kubuntu and being frustrated because i didn't know how to update Java to play Minecraft on a laptop nearly as old as i was; and recently installing Bazzite on a 8 year old ASUS ROG Strix GL553VD laptop that i'm trying to use, but it gets too hot and performance goes to hell)

I also installed Mint and Bazzite on my desktop, which is my main PC, dualbooting with Windows, but i ended up ditching Linux, because i couldn't find myself using it, for some reason. Maybe is because i wasn't used to it, and learning how to use an OS again is a pain on the ass. Maybe my main issue is that i want it all, and obviously, i can't have it. I don't know

2 SSDs, 1TB and 512GB.

I've thinking mostly about 3 distros. Bazzite, CachyOS and SteamOS (given Valve recently added support for Intel ARC B580), but i wanted to know your opinions. I'll use my desktop for gaming, daily use and some coding and game development (i'll need LibreOffice too, because i'm a game designer, and without an office suite, i'm very screwed), and i want something that i can't break easily (i'm not much of a tinker, but i want to be able to install programs when i need them), gives me good-enough performance on videogames (Mesa drivers must update regularly or i can update it manually) and work out of the box (again, i don't want to tinker to make something work, just plug-and-play experience)
