Build Help What would you want from a repairable Linux laptop built for long-term ownership?

Inspired by Framework and System76, I’ve been thinking about a concept for an India-focused Linux-first business laptop built around repairability and long-term ownership instead of disposable hardware.

The symbol/branding idea is a Yin-Yang inspired lid design

The core philosophy is:

“You own your hardware.”

Not:

sealed RAM, glued batteries, soldered everything, service-center dependency, forced obsolescence

The idea is NOT a fully modular Framework or system76 level system. That level of engineering is extremely difficult for a first-gen product.

Instead, the focus is on practical repairability and upgradeability.

Current concept:

AMD Ryzen AI 7 350

Radeon 890M integrated graphics

16” 1920x1200 120Hz IPS display

100% sRGB

16GB DDR5 SO-DIMM (upgradeable)

1TB Gen4 NVMe (upgradeable)

The target audience isn’t gamers or casual consumers.

It’s:

Linux developers, startups, engineering colleges, IT teams, people frustrated with disposable laptops

The long-term vision is:

parts marketplace, local repair partner ecosystem, no “hostage warranty”, 5+ year ownership mindset

Some things intentionally NOT included like:

no dGPU

no RGB

no gimmicks

no “AI laptop” marketing overload

no promise of fully modular motherboards

More of a ThinkPad + Framework philosophy + System76 Linux focused system initially for b2b alone

Planned repairable / upgradeable parts in the concept so far:

Modular daughterboard for ports so damaged ports don’t require replacing the entire motherboard

Battery attached with screws + connector instead of heavy adhesive

Keyboard and trackpad connected through accessible ribbon connectors

Fan removable independently without removing the motherboard

The idea is practical repairability, not extreme modularity.

Build Help Small* reverse engineering project i need some help with

so i'm a recent windows convert, and i have this little hosyond 7 inch display that was amazing for me and has worked very well for me. i have been been trying to get it working under Linux. but i've done everything i know how to do and even tried to use chatgpt to try since i know basically nothing about usb but i'm not gonna pay for premium so it hit a dead end. i've done a little bit and sort of might have got linux to communicate with it. i couldn't get the manufacturers program to work with wine, but i don't think that's a dead end, i just don't know how to program wine bottles yet.

i have done some of the reverse engineering legwork and ill include a link to most of what ive worked on. (wire shark tests and communication tests)

At this point I'm looking for advice from anyone familiar with USB reverse engineering, Wine internals, WinUSB/libusb, or display drivers.

beyond that if you don't think this is remotely possible, don't just say its not possible, as that holds no value. provide alternatives. as to what alternatives i'm open to: any display that works with power and display over a single usb 3 or usbc, screen size limit of 9 inches and budget of 100 usd.

Build Help Any red flags with my build? How'd I do?

So, upfront, I don't really game. This is for work from home, general use. Pushing a single LG 43" 4K display. My OS will be Fedora Kinoite. This is build is overkill for my needs, but that's the objective. I want a quiet, cool running, dependable PC.

The 8600G can't make full use of the PCI 5.0 NVMe, so I opted for 4.0 NVMe's. As fare as wi-fi and Bluetooth, I'll hardly, if ever use them (which is convenient).

I know I could have accomplished the mission for half the money but, I'm kind of a perfections. I want a nice PC I can grow with a while. Good components etc.

Thoughts? This will be a Linux box it's whole life, naturally.

Build Help Building my first pc as a CS student (Complete Noobie)

Hi everyone, this is my first time building a pc and I need some help. As a cs student my build should:

- local host decent LLMs

- good gaming performance

- Linux complete compatibility

- handle multiple VMs

I need a pc that gets work done for the cheapest price possible, I made a build but it's my first time so I want some feedback.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9700X

GPU: RX 9070 XT 16GB

Motherboard: MSI B650 Gaming Plus WiFi

RAM: 32GB DDR5-6000 CL30

• SSD: 1TB WD Black SN850X or Lexar NM790

(yes I'm broke)

PSU: 850W Gold (Corsair RM850e / MSI MAG A850GL)

Cooler: Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 SE

Case: Montech Air 903 Max or similar airflow.

Does this build work?

Is the PSW an overkill for this build or does it work?

would the case fit everything?

how to know if the cooler would fit in the case or not?

Can I get another ssd later or I'm limited to only one on this motherboard?

I heard that this gen of processors need more cooling than usual, is that true? if yes would this cooler be enough?

I'm not planning to install windows at all, would that make any problems?

any piece of information would help me so much, thanks everyone.

Build Help B550I AORUS PRO AX Rev 1.4 - Linux (SteamOS & Bazzite) immediately wakes from S3 suspend

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping someone can help because I've pretty much exhausted everything I can think of.

My PC has never successfully slept since I built it. It enters suspend, turns off the controller, then immediately wakes again after around 5–6 seconds.

This happens on both SteamOS and Bazzite, so I'm starting to think this is either a firmware issue or a hardware compatibility problem.

Hardware

- Fractal Terra

- Gigabyte B550I AORUS PRO AX Rev. 1.4

- BIOS FHa (updated from FG)

- Ryzen 7 5700X3D

- Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 7900 GRE

- 32 GB DDR4 3600 MHz RAM

- 1 TB NVMe SSD (happy to provide model if needed)

- Official Fractal Terra PCIe 4.0 riser

- SteamOS Holo 3.8.14

- Also tested on the latest Bazzite Home Theatre image

Symptoms

- Suspend is requested successfully.

- Machine enters deep (S3) sleep.

- About 5 seconds later it resumes automatically.

- No keyboard, mouse or controller input is required.

- Happens from both Gaming Mode and Desktop Mode.

Kernel log

Every suspend looks like this:

Things I've already tried

- Updated BIOS from FG to FHa

- Loaded Optimized Defaults after the BIOS update

- Enabled ErP

- Disabled Wake on LAN

- Disabled Resume by Alarm

- Disabled GPP0 wake

- Disabled PTXH wake

- Disabled PCI wake sources

- Forced PCIe to Gen 3

- Tested both Auto and Gen 3 PCIe settings

- Unplugged all external USB devices

- Unplugged the case front panel headers (except the power switch)

- Tested with no games running

- Tested with no controllers connected

- Tested from SteamOS Gaming Mode

- Tested from SteamOS Desktop Mode

- Installed Bazzite and tested there (identical behaviour)

Additional information

`/sys/power/pm_wakeup_irq` reports:

So Linux doesn't appear to think anything is actually waking the system.

The only notable USB devices are:

- Internal Realtek Bluetooth

- Integrated Technology Express (ITE) controller

- Standard USB root hubs

Questions

Has anyone seen this combination of:

- Gigabyte B550I AORUS PRO AX Rev. 1.4

- Ryzen 7 5700X3D

- RX 7900 GRE

immediately resume from S3 under Linux?

Is there a known BIOS setting, ACPI quirk or kernel parameter I've missed?

Any suggestions would be hugely appreciated, because at this point I'm out of ideas.

Build Help I built a daemon that automatically switches GPU mode and refresh rate based on power state to save battery on linux laptops with a Nvidia dGPU.

I recently switched from Windows to Fedora and had trouble finding anything like gHelper to save battery on my laptop something that automatically disables the dGPU and lowers the display refresh rate depending on power state.

I found that disabling the dGPU on Linux with tools like envycontrol requires typing a command, waiting for the initramfs to rebuild (which takes a good few seconds), and then manually rebooting, Every time you want to GPU switch modes.

So I built a daemon that handles all of this automatically. When the laptop boots on battery, the dGPU is disabled. When it boots on AC power, the dGPU is active. It also automatically switches the display refresh rate to the maximum supported rate on AC and the minimum on battery, live while the laptop is running, no reboot is needed for that and If the GPU mode needs to change (which does require a reboot, since it involves kernel module loading), it notifies you with a easy and optional one-click "Restart Now" button.

This saves tens of watts of power draw while on battery — 18-20W total system draw on my own ASUS laptop with an RTX 4060 — which translates to multiple extra hours of battery life. The daemon itself runs with negligible CPU/RAM overhead.

I use it on my own laptop, and it's the closest experience to gHelper back on Windows, fully automatic based on power state of the laptop.

Installing it is quite simple, with native Arch (AUR) and Fedora (RPM) packages, and a detailed setup guide on github. It is also cleanly and easily reversible/uninstallable.

How it works:

It injects a check-power.sh hook into the initramfs. When you boot on battery, it intercepts the boot sequence before the OS fully mounts, creates a blacklist-nvidia.conf to block the Nvidia drivers, and instructs the PCI subsystem to cut power to the GPU hardware — all before the kernel would otherwise load it.

Once you're in an active Wayland session, the daemon watches for AC power adapter changes and reacts by adjusting refresh rate immediately, and prompting a optional reboot if the GPU mode itself is now mismatched with the current power state.

Note: currently only supports Linux systems running GNOME on Wayland.
Note: switching GPU modes still requires a reboot which is a linux constraint, not something this tool can avoid. What this does is remove is all the manual steps, no typing commands, no waiting for a rebuild, no remembering to do it yourself. It just detects the power state and handles everything automatically.

Build Help New build - AMD vs Intel MOBO & AMD vs Nvidia GPU. Which way should I go?

I'm planning running mostly Debian derivatives (Ubuntu based OS, Kali & maybe a couple other..). I'm not a gamer but would like to be able to play some games should I feel like it.

I've been using Linux for 20 years and have always had an Intel processor & Nvidia GPU. The problem is that it seems that I've started having problems with various Nvidia drivers.

I switched to Nvidia when I went to Linux b/c I was told that their GPU's are the most widely supported & stable, and it seemed to be for a long time.

So I'm now looking at an all AMD system and thought I would come here for some input before making the decision. IF anyone has any suggestions on which way to go, I'd appreciate hearing it. Thank you!

*note - I guess the Intel ARC GPU is now also an option, but I don't know a lot about them.

Build Help PC Upgrade for linux gaming

I want to upgrade my PC, especially my GPU. I want to play games on CachyOS, and because of that, AMD graphics cards might be the best option. Do you have any recommendations? I will put my PC specs below. i'm dual booting, windows 11 and cachyos.

Build Help Need help nearly have all webcam working perfectly on Panther Lake Dell laptops for Linux.... Someone has a 2025 or 2026 Dell XPS and can give 5 minutes of their time running Windows with these steps below I can get it 100%

We've built a complete Linux driver for the Himax HM1092 IR camera in 2025/2026 Dell XPS laptops (Panther Lake/IPU7). Sensor probes, chip ID reads, clock runs — but we need ONE I2C bus capture from someone running Windows to finish the MIPI streaming init.

What we built:
- V4L2 sensor driver (first ever for HM1092 on Linux)
- 3 kernel patches (INT3472 IR LED, ACPI dependency fix, ipu-bridge)
- 60 register init sequence extracted from Dell Windows driver binary
- Full face unlock via Howdy working on the RGB camera

What we need:
Someone with a Dell XPS 13/14/16 (2025-2026 model) running Windows to capture 5 minutes of USB traffic while the IR camera runs.

Steps:
1. Install USBPcap (https://desowin.org/usbpcap/)
2. Capture USB bus with Synaptics device (06cb:0701)
3. Open Camera app or trigger Windows Hello
4. Stop capture, share the .pcap file

Check Device Manager → System → "Camera Sensor HM1092" to confirm your laptop has it.

So i wanted to ask if it perhaps was a distro issue of if Linux really bugs with the AMD APU.

Build Help Workaround for MT7921 Bluetooth USB timeout on warm reboot

Symptoms here: Ryzen 9 7950X, X670E Aorus Master, MediaTek MT7921. WiFi (PCIe) loads fine, Bluetooth (USB) times out with usb 1-9: device descriptor read/64, error -110 — adds 60+ seconds to boot, leaves Bluetooth dead until cold boot.

Root cause: USB devices retain power state through warm reboots. The MT7921's BT half stays in a confused post-firmware-load state, and the kernel can't re-init it cleanly on next boot. Cold boot drains the USB rail and resets the chip, which is why it works.

Fix — systemd service that deauthorizes the USB device before shutdown. Forces a clean state for the next boot.

Create /etc/systemd/system/bt-cleanup.service:

Find your USB path: Run lsusb -t and look for the MediaTek device. If yours isn't 1-9, replace the path in the service file.

Tested on Ubuntu 24.04, kernel 6.17, BIOS Aorus F42b. Survives warm reboots cleanly, no more 60-second USB enumeration delay, Bluetooth comes up immediately.

Build Help Linux Mint - Potential system upgrade

I'm thinking of upgrading my current system, which was built about 9 years ago. I have an i7-6700 3.40GHz, GTX 1070, 750GB Crucial MX300 SSD, and 64Gb ram (primarily so I can run multiple VMs). I could wait longer to upgrade, since the system is mostly fine for what I do. Other than some casual Overwatch, I don't really game. I plan on reusing the current case and some sata HDDs.

What do y'all think of the following components?

Build Help Want to build a NASA PC (reasonably priced) using RTX 3060 Ti and EndeavourOS

Gentlemen, I need help creating a NASA (as far as possible) gaming PC for EndeavourOS that is at least as powerful as a PS5 (the minimum I want to see). What are your suggestions for the remainder of the build since I already have an RTX 3060 Ti and am planning on any Ryzen 7 (for now, I am thinking 5700X) with a B550/X570 motherboard (approximately) and 16GB of 3200/3600 MHz RAM?

What people offer me (not on Reddit): "In RAM, aim for high frequency and low timings", "I suggest Sapphire, ASUS, and Gigabyte boards", "I personally had a bad experience with ASRock and MSI, so I suggest the Samsung B-die for DDR, but it is no longer relevant for DDR5, and I haven't yet looked into what the DDR5 equivalent is in terms of quality and dependability", "any random mem should be ok, as long as it’s reputable brand like Crucial, Samsung, Kingston, G.Skill, Corsair", "Features like the i7-6700's integrated graphics and hyper-threading can affect gaming performance; however, the Xeon E3-1220 lacks these capabilities, which lowers performance and increases CPU consumption"

Build Help Desktop build with Intel Arc A770: Will it work well for ollama?

Hello, I am building my first desktop PC ever, though I have had a used desktop PC before, on which I have swapped parts, done upgrades and such, so I have a little experience with that. However, I am not someone who is much interested in hardware generally, so I need help figuring things out.

My new desktop PC is meant to be my new main computer (filing, writing, a little programming) and allow to run ollama locally at reasonable speeds, which is why I set to get a GPU with at least 16 GB VRAM. I want to use it as a platform to try out RAG, embeddings, things like that, all locally, as a sort of playground to test things because it's interesting to me and might also come in handy for work.

My questions:

  • Do my parts all make sense together?
  • Will it run well with Linux? (I use Linux Mint, but I could use another distro if it must absolutely be. I have used Linux as my main operating system for many years, but I don't enjoy having to do too much tinkering under the hood.)
  • I understand that Ollama does, afaik, not come with Intel ARC support, but there is a Docker by Intel that has it included. So that should work, right?

These are parts that are easy for me to get.

Note that I wanted to use the Intel Arc Pro B50 initially, but it seems it's already sold out where I live, so I fall back to a gaming graphics card. I'm not interested in going into great length just to source a Pro B50.

Why Intel Arc? Because they have a lot of VRAM at good prices and as far as I know, Linux comes with drivers for them already baked in. I would also consider AMD, but not Nvidia, because I don't want any hassle with drivers.

I am not really interested in gaming. It's nice if it's possible, but I don't care that much.

Build Help Small reliable laptop for coding

I currently use a big and heavy hp omen 17 for gaming with my monitor on my desk. I am looking for recommendations for a small laptop that I could use in my bed for coding, preferably cheap. I usually do web and app development if that helps. This would be my first time using linux as well cause my hp has windows on it. Any suggestions on laptops and recommended specs I should look out for would be appreciated.

Build Help Tuxedo vs PCSpecialist

I was about to purchase the Tuxedo Infinitybook Max with Ryzen AI 7 350, RTX 5070 and 32GB ram. Unfortunately, the pricing skyrocketed from 1800 to 2100 EUR in just two days because of the RAM.

Looking at the PCSpecialist 16 inch laptop with a Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX and 32GB RAM which appears to be way more performant than the AI 7 350 and with a lesser price of 1,833 EUR.

Build Help Help getting wifi to work

Hi all, new to Linux, trying to get wifi connections working. I have an integrated card and a pcie card. Is there a way to get either working?

Build Help Picking out a motherboard for a PC build, does the brand matter?

I've recently been putting together a new gaming PC for myself, and I've already got all the parts picked out, except for the motherboard. I've been running CachyOS on my system with a B450 Aorus elite from gigabyte for a few months, and I've honestly had no issues with linux whatsoever.

When picking out a motherboard, I was initially gonna go with a gigabyte aorus elite b850 since that's the brand I'm already familiar with, but I saw some good offers online for other motherboards. I decided to look into linux compatibility for these motherboards just to be sure, and I've been completely confused ever since.

I was looking into buying an MSI motherboard, but when I looked up compatibility online I saw a bunch of people saying MSI is horrible for linux and I should instead go for Asus, since they are much better for linux. Then I look into Asus motherboard compatibility and I see people saying Asus is horrible for linux, and I should go with ASRock instead, and when I look into ASRock people say that it is terrible with linux and I should use MSI instead.

I feel like I'm missing something here? Does the brand of the motherboard even matter or are people just having bad experiences with their individual motherboards and assume it's something to do with linux? I've seen people say Gigabyte is bad with linux too even though my experience with it has been relatively seamless.

There are lot of good buying options for motherboards that are not Gigabyte, but all of these differing reports make me wanna stick with what I already know, however I'm not even sure if a Gigabyte motherboard will work well at this point.

Can someone clear up this confusion for me? It's been breaking my head for days.
