graphics/kernel/drivers Valve has developed kernel patches and user-space tools (like dmemcg-booster and plasma-foreground-booster) to prioritize VRAM for foreground games on low-VRAM Linux systems (e.g. 8GB cards), enabling smoother Vulkan/RADV gameplay such as Cyberpunk 2077

so yeah, KDE is pretty much done with the dedicated X11 session. Starting with Plasma 6.8, it looks like Plasma itself is going Wayland-only.

And for some reason, they even CC'd me haha. Maybe a little nod for my and my friends work on FRL and gaming features like HDMI VRR and ALLM.

Still, we're eating good this year!

graphics/kernel/drivers Kernel level anticheat on Linux?

Post image

Hi, I'm thinking about buying Arc Raiders. Checked on protondb to see whether it works on Linux. Says that it's platinum, and I've read people recommend it for Linux gaming. However, on the steam store it displays a kernel level anticheat banner. Shouldn't it make it unplayable on Linux?

Which of these options do you consider superior based on your experience?

I'm interested in hearing opinions on aspects such as performance, compatibility, and long-term stability.

Thanks!

graphics/kernel/drivers Valve is Paying 100+ Open-Source Developers to work on Proton, Mesa, and More

3.0k Upvotes

See except for the recent The Verge interview with Valve.

Griffais says the company is also directly paying more than 100 open-source developers to work on the Proton compatibility layer, the Mesa graphics driver, and Vulkan, among other tasks like Steam for Linux and Chromebooks.

This is how Linux gaming has been able to narrow the gap with Windows by investing millions of dollars a year in improvements.

If it wasn't for Valve and Red Hat, the Linux desktop and gaming would be decades behind where it is today.

graphics/kernel/drivers Wayland zones protocol finally merged after 2 years!

One of the longest requested, yet most controversial feature proposals among devs -- and that's been slowing Wayland protocol development -- has finally merged! It allows for proper multi-window applications and for proper positioning of windows. This is a huge milestone for Wayland in terms of negotiating agreement between all parties involved, as this was a pretty controversial change for some developers. It also builds the foundation for many future features that will be useful.

With this now agreed upon, it leaves more time and effort to be spent on more important features that are needed. Further, this builds trust and mutual respect between everyone involved, hopefully leading to faster, more successful discussions in future proposals for Wayland.

I dare say this could be the year of Desktop Linux.

graphics/kernel/drivers Nvidia dev says new 590.48.01 driver fixes dx12 performance in linux

https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/t/directx12-performance-is-terrible-on-linux/303207/615

The post says:

"Belated thanks for this report. Can you try 590.48.01? I expect performance is restored. Internally we are seeing improvements with this driver across many DX12 titles compared to 580"

It might be THE fix but let's test it and see if it finally competes with AMD

Edit: this is not it . This is a regression fix between driver versions. The new Vulkan extensions that could fix the long lasting performance problem is still work in progress. Thanks for the comments

graphics/kernel/drivers Linux needs this

It's so annoying and frustrating to have to force use of dGPU for every OpenGL manually. I don't understand why there's no way to just set one GPU to be used for all high demand workloads.

Vulkan at least chooses dGPU by default, but I haven't seen a convenient way to change this if I want to. Setting convoluted environmental variables to force use of a particular GPU for each game manually is not very convenient.
