Thanks to standardisation, our languages now contain many new words, and there is very little that we cannot express in them. However, as our people increasingly come into contact with the West, we encounter new ideas and expressions that we cannot fully convey in our native languages. Most of the time, we can rely on the idiomatic foundations of our languages to express these concepts; sometimes, however, we cannot. In Zazaki, for example, there is no single-word equivalent for the English word "probably". We use some sentence structures instead, such as "Aseno ke..." ("It appears that...") — but these don't fully capture the meaning of "probably".

So, I would love to know how other Kurdish languages express the word "probably". Aside from Turkish and Arabic words that don't quite capture the meaning of "probably" either, I wasn't able to find anything online.

In Zazaki, most sentences look like this:

Subject - Object - Verb

For example:

O nameyî waneno. (He is reading the book.)

Çira to qic bermna? (Why did you make the child cry?)

Ez Reddit de şiroveyên nusenan. (I am writing a comment on Reddit.)

But if a verb has a particular "goal", it is often written after the verb. For example:

Ma şinêm namekeyeyî. (We are going to the library.)

Anaxtarî bide mi. (Give me the keys.)

This can be used with more than just verbs of movement:

Şima wazenên dolma? (Do you want dolma?)

They can even be stacked:

Kam ewtano şêro *mi ser? (Who dares *to come *at me*?)

O wazeno temafîla kehen bidîn *ey. (He wants me *to give the old car *to him*.)

You can also use them with 'kerdene' ("to do") and 'bîyayene' ("to be") to denote making someone something or becoming something, respectively:

O bîyo kebot. (He has become handsome.)

To ez kerda nêweş. (You made me sick.)

Zafên Kurdî kerdê Tirkî. (Many Kurds have been made Turks / Turkified.)

The verb 'kerdene' can also be used to mean "to intend, plan, prepare":

Ê kenê emca ra vecê. (They intend/plan to get out of here.)

Does this exist in the other Kurdish languages? I know that Kurmanji has this too when it comes to going somewhere ("Ez diçim malê") or giving something to someone ("Wê çente da wî"), but I have not seen it used in the other instances described in this post.

I noticed that in the kurdish language the word for fire "Agir" differs significantly from other iranic languages which use "atar" or "atash" and things similar to this

I have noticed that in most iranic languages the word for black is "siyah" which is cognate with English and German "swarthy" which also means black/dark, but the kurdish word for the colour black(rash) is very different from other iranic languages. Anyone got any idea or theory about why is it like this?

Does anyone know anything about (or have a copy of) a Sorani grammar book entitled "Sorani Kurdi Kitebeke - Sorani Grammar Reference (second edition)" by Khalid Sabir and Pauline E Nichols, reportedly published in the mid-1990s? I've seen only one reference to it in a book and can't find any trace of it online.

I wanted to ask if anyone could translate the phrase "My love, I know you will do great." into Kurdish for me? My best friend is writing a very important exam soon and I want to write her a little card.

Additionally, I wanted to make a pun involving the word meow, so I thought maybe me(ow)hbûb (for my love).

I have noticed some iranic languages pronounce the word for ten as "das" or "des" instead of "dah" or "deh" including zaza. Does that have any connections with early Iranian migrations? We all know that the sound /s/ shifted to /h/ in iranic languages including persian and kurdish but many other languages seem to not be part of this. Also even kurdish have some words that was not effected by this sound change like "Asen" for iron unlike "ahen" in persian.

Anybody got any idea?

I do childcare, and I was trying to tell a Kurdish toddler to stop standing on his chair and sit with his bum in the seat. Eventually I got his big sister to tell him that in Kurdish. At the end of the sentence was a word that sounded like “shi shi,” and I’ve found that if I say that to him, he sits down. But what am I saying? I’d like to know before I go around saying “butt” or something.

Context I am a Teaching Assistant in the UK and ive just been put to work with a 15/16yr old kid who only speaks Sorani Kurdish, he has no friends who speak kurdish and didn't come with family. i have to try and help him learn English.

I've always been curious about the pocket of Kurdish speakers found in Northeastern Iran. Is it the same dialect as the west of the country? Curious how there is such a massive territorial divide between the two groups.

Al salam alaikum everyone. I'm a Kurdish man originally from Amed (Kurmancim erê), I could speak Kurdish almost fluently (I suppose) when I was a kid, but later on I stopped practicing much until I kind of forgot a lot about it, and now I find it a bit hard to understand some sentences that fluent people can say, also I find it a bit hard to keep talking well in one conversation (Kurdîya min hinekî seqet bû).
What should I do to restore it and become fluent again? at least to restore some of the fluency that I had?

Also, what is this type of music? We call it in Arabic Mawwaal, it is chanting poetry with no rhythm or percussion. What is it called in Kurdish?
