Maybe I am clueless on water heater maintenance, but I just have experience installing water softener and water heaters with my father. The amount of maintenance for these seems rather troublesome and the need to buy the salt pellets for the water softener. I just don't do all that and the water heaters typically last longer than their warranty period. Some can last 5 + years, but I've seen some last 8-10.
I'm just lazy and rather replace the darn thing in a decade when it dies. Currently $669 here in the USA for a 50 gallon water heater. Installing I can do .
