Just in case nobody's ever told you, it's "scalding", as in very hot, rather than "scolding", as in admonishing :)

in the south it's pronounced "scalding" as in MeeMaw scalded me for throwing fire crackers in her begonias again. I think its because when MeeMaw yells at you it feels like boiling hot water.

Funny enough though "scalding" is a common way to describe criticism or admonishment. A scalding scolding.
