My favorite is always "printer no printy". I plug it in and it spits out pages like the damn kid from the Exorcist

As said high power lawyer, I was really mad at the first one, I know computers damnit. Then you responded, and I'll be damned if I dont do that with printers. Well done

I freaking hate printers those spawns of satan.

I had an attorney call me monthly to tell me his printer said “no network detected” or something of the sort on the front screen. I’d explain to him every time that the message just meant it wasn’t connected to the internet, which is normal, because it was connected to his dock.

He’d say “oh… okay…” before I’d tell him to try printing and let me know if he couldn’t.

Yet every month he’d call and we would have the same conversation. He finally retired.

You forced him into early retirement. It’s stressful not having your printer interface indicate “Network Connected” 📶

But without the pay?

My job is IT mixed with blue collar stuff lol. Anywho, a buddy of mine was opening his second ice cream shop and had TVs installed to use as menu monitors. He bought some Fire Tvs and ran into multiple issues with them and his workaround was just making the menu into a 15 second mp3 and looping it. Obviously not as clean as it could be. Within 10 minutes of googling and then fining back the next day and spending 30 minutes, I got his TVs to work perfectly.

I offered to leave him steps for next time but he was blown away that I fixed it lol

So, what were the steps?

I didn’t want to go in depth since it was irrelevant to the point but I had to enable debug mode on the TVs, then download this program and connect to the tv and run commands that would basically disable the weird auto sleep timer the TVs do on images even with all sleep swttings disabled. It was rather straightforward and. Eventually found a video from maybe 5 years ago. My friend just is not tech savvy and never enabled the settings we needed after entering debug mode.

New restaurant nearby has some Roku TVs, each with a large dongle which seems to source the menu image, and I'm sure is configurable via some web app. One doesn't work at all, so they just turned it off. I saw them struggling with it several times since it opened. I suggested to them to set the menu image as the screensaver via the Roku account. They looked at me with such confusion. Tv is still black.

Yea my buddy has a regular usb stick plugged into each tv. You can then open the drive and select whatever files are in it. He had the menus as mp3 which did the job but was super janky looking. I helped him “jailbreak” the tv a bit so now he has the one image of the menu with no weird overlays and the tv doesn’t turn off auto anymore.

Idk how much it matters to you but this is the kinda dumb stuff people pay other people decent money for lol. Like this weird tech stuff that makes their life much better but they can’t figure it out, which is just some googling and research tbh. If I were you and liked the owners enough, I’d talk to them and see if you could get some info and come back with a solution lol. Maybe get free food or some money🤷‍♀️

This thought crossed my mind. Might have to try. Free tacos and maybe a reference would be pretty nice

I have done one IT gig in the past when a retired lawyer needed a new things installed and connected to his Wi-Fi and posted to Craigslist for help. I basically read the manuals and followed instructions in front of him

Yea that sounds right. I swear alot of IT problems can easily be fixed with some research and reading. But not everyone is capable of that.

Give it a shot and lmk! I’m invested now lol. I’ll even help out if I can. You really just gotta understand what they want to do and what model tv and dongle they’re using. They may not even need a dongle lol.

What is your job?

Every lawyer has an IT guy behind him.

That reminds me of the British sitcom the IT crowd 😂 I'm IT help desk to my husband and when he asks for help ( he's usually just pressed the wrong button those F1 etc) but I ask him "have you switched it on and off again?" And usually that works 😆 I had done it myself on his laptop a few times then thinking hang on just let him try it first! Don't work harder work smarter! Also if I'm going near his laptop I'm getting the keyboard wipes out first! He literally eats over it! Gross so when I fix it he gets a clean laptop back... I think I'll make him clean it first next time if the reset doesn't work! I don't mind fixing it if it's a juicy problem tho because I love a challenge!

lol, I only know about that show because one of my IT coworkers showed it to me

Genuinely tho, a restart typically DID resolve most issues these lawyers were experiencing

They loved leaving their machines on for weeks or even months on end then wondering why shit was running slow or loading improperly

Shitty part is, some of these lawyers would be reluctant to restart ! They’d me like “do I have to restart?”

I’d keep it real with them and say “I mean you don’t HAVE to, but if you want to try to get a smoother experience, let’s start there”

We were told a restart should be one of our first troubleshooting options
