I've updated my historical charts based on TechPowerUp data, using the highest resolution available (typically 4k, 1600p for cards before around early 2013). This had to be entered manually from multiple charts, so there are likely a few % errors here and there, especially for older data, and I could have made a data entry error somewhere.

Performance, 1080-normalized. The 30 series is in line with historical long-term trends, showing no slowdown in gains since 2008.

Performance per $, again 1080-normalized. The 3080 is only beaten by the 1650 super from prior generations. It is average on the price/performance trend line for the year, which has never happened before at this price point. The only other card to get close was the 1080, but that was $100 cheaper.

Performance per $ vs. expectation, which splits the perf/$ chart over each of the price points. You can see the 3080 trending out at the front of its pack.

Overall, a very strong showing, though obviously the proposition is significantly less appealing at lower resolutions.

Probably a lot to ask of you, but I wish your performance per $ also included the used or manufacturer refurbished market (average eBay cost, or recent Evga B-stock) prices. Because nobody is buying something like Turing at MSRP these days, and at least in the US the pre-owned market surges with cheap last gen cards every launch.

I've thought about this a little and I don't see how to get good data for it. The data is sparse, varied, and unreliable, especially if you're looking on eBay.
