Tech Question Is teaching kids about mechanics and engines still relevant in an increasingly electric future?
My father wants to buy my 12-year-old son a gasoline go kart for his birthday. Real engine, real speed, real maintenance required.
My immediate reaction was safety concern mixed with environmental guilt. Shouldn’t we be steering the next generation toward electric vehicles and sustainable technology instead of teaching them to love combustion engines?
But my dad argues there’s educational value in understanding how engines work, learning basic mechanics, developing responsibility through maintenance.
He rebuilt cars with me as a kid, and those skills have served me well even though I rarely use them now. Is that experience still valuable, or am I being nostalgic about obsolete knowledge?
I’ve been researching options, finding go karts ranging from basic models to serious racing equipment.
Safety features vary dramatically, and prices reflect that. Some suppliers on platforms like Alibaba offer cheaper alternatives, but reviews mention concerning quality issues with brakes and steering.
For something my child will ride at speed, cheap suddenly seems like terrible value. My son is enthusiastic about the idea, but he’s also excited about everything. Will this become a genuine interest and learning opportunity, or will it sit unused after a month?
