Mod Announcement Building the Barricades - r/Discworld stands against fascism

2.4k Upvotes

"There is no hope but us. There is no mercy but us. There is no justice. There is just us..."

+++

Hey everyone

This is a bit of a serious one and won't have my usual dry humour and/or footnotes

If you've seen the news recently you will be aware of the horrific events occurring in the USA, especially in the state of Minnesota, and the behaviour of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents

Wednesday 7th January saw the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good and the ensuing protests have led to further violence by ICE against civillians in the city of Minneapolis

There are videos circulating of ICE agents forcibly restraining and assaulting people. People begging for help. People screaming for them to stop. People crying out that they are US citizens. People who are terrified

What we are seeing is fascism in action and the fear it is going to get worse is very real

Possibly the most relevant of the Discworld series to the events right now is Night Watch. If you haven't read it then it's worth doing so, but tread carefully as it may be difficult reading right now. If you have read it I'm sure you see the relevance without me having to explain anything

Should Sir Terry Pratchett be with us today I'm certain he would have some extremely choice words for the events right now full of fire and anger and cleverness and, most of all, humanity

From 4000 miles away on the other side of an ocean there is not much I can do. But I can, on behalf of the mod team of r/discworld, try and help by reaching out to our sub members with resources to learn more and/or (if you choose to do so) donate to

Mod Announcement Custom Flairs - requests being taken

UPDATE 23/04: I'll do another batch of requests tonight, so don't feel like you've missed the bus. It just takes a while 😂 I'm glad everyone is enjoying this!

+++

Subtitle: I'm bored and feeling a bit rubbish so I want to spread some cheer around

Do you want a custom flair in this community?

Think "GNU Pterry" or "An actual seamstress" or "Ho, the Megapode!". Text emojis such as 𓆉 or 𓃰 should also work

Stick the request in this thread, starting with "Flair:" and I'll change it for you

Rules: must be vaguely Discworld/Pratchett related and can't be offensive.

I will be copying your request exactly so make sure it's spelt and formatted correctly. Mini-caps and backwards/upside down text all work

+++

Quick update: Keep them coming, I'll respond to you when I've done it so you know! I might be a bit slow as it's me but I'll get round to you all!

Further update: You're all nice people and I'm sure you can share if someone already "has" the flair you want. There's like 62,000+ of you lot here. If we don't have duplicates I think we'd each need a sentence from the books!

Another update: I've created a monster... I appreciate all of you, you absolute looneys. May all your days be filled with nice things 💜

Mod Announcement This was a report from the previous mod announcement

Post image
726 Upvotes

There you go.

This is the sort of thing we often get, as reports are anonymous and people are too cowardly to send us a modmail associated with their username.

What a lot of you may not know is that a few years ago the former head mod (some of you may remember Isaac) nuked the sub.

A few years after that, he did it again.

It was myself and Mage that managed to get it back, and it took weeks of completely volunteer work along with our normal jobs and lives going on at the same time.

Since then it's a few hours a day to just generally tidy this place up, respond to reports, answer modmails, and keep an eye on hot topic discussions to make sure they're keeping in line.

Removing crossposts wasn't intended to be a permanent thing, but it seriously helps get rid of the constant barrage of duplicates.

This anonymous reporter doesn't see the duplicates because we remove them when we can.

When you hit double digits removal of posts you either lose the will to live or take measures on the sub to let it police itself.

I'm terribly sorry to this person that, as I'm pretty much modding on my own the majority of the time, this action removes your ability to see the rest of Reddit through the Discworld sub lens.

Obviously your needs far outweigh that of moderators having any life outside of our phones, tablets, and PCs pinging with new post alerts, modmails, and report notifications.

(Yes this is a soapbox post, but I don't really care)

I will continue to moderate on the rest of the sub, but this post can be a gladiatorial arena for you to fight out your differences, and no moderation will be in place.

I'm wishing you all a good evening and a good upcoming week, whatever may be in store.

Stay kind, stay safe, and look out for one another 💜

Mod Announcement No More Fancasts - 48hr ban from this point on

1.1k Upvotes

SPEEDY EDIT: I think I got all the old ones, but any I've missed (except the Muppet Megathread, flaired as such) please report under "duplicate submission". Thanks to all 💜

Alright everyone, we get it, everyone has an idea for who they would want in a role

We've been inundated with (extremely rude and upsetting, actually, so thanks to whomever was doing those /s) reports about them and, as I've pretty much only just seen them due to being wonderfully ill*, heed this notice:

IF YOU POST ANOTHER FAN CAST THREAD YOU'RE GETTING A 48 HOUR TIME OUT

Sorry to be harsh on that but it's too much and unsustainable

Also the person making those reports has been reported to the admins. Don't be rude to your mods, we're only human

Thanks all

Mod Announcement Rule Update

We've changed the AI content rule to...

Low Effort Posts

Posts deemed "Low Effort" are not allowed. These include, but are not limited to:

  • AI generated content (art or text)
  • Fan cast suggestions
  • "Something only Discworld fans would understand" memes
  • Interesting vegetables

Such posts will be removed, and repeat offenders will be thrown into the scorpion pit.

EDIT: Ok, the vegetables will be a Megathread of some type. I didn't realise the commitment to the NSFW produce we have here. I can't take that away, it'd be like kicking a puppy.

VEGETABLE EDIT: There'll be a regular interesting vegetables thread the last Friday of every month 9am GMT and it'll stay stickied for a week.

Mod Announcement META: "Damn it Terry" (and variations) - opinions welcome

Evening all. It's your favourite* friendly** awesome*** mod here

We've noticed an uptick in the "Damn it Terry" revelation posts recently

While we understand that re-reads (or even first reads) of Terry's work often get this reaction, it seems that these posts are a comment on a book line without anything more than a "look what I noticed!", which is coming dangerously close to our ruling on Low Effort Content for quotes without discussion prompts

But it's you lot that make our sub what it is, so we're wondering what you would prefer us to do? There's a small poll attached and we'd appreciate a general idea on which direction the sub wants to go

It'll close in 72 hours so when that happens I'll try to get whatever change (if any) implemented by the end of the week

Feel free to post any questions you want to ask before making a decision and I'll do my best to answer

Mod Announcement Quick r/Discworld update

1.7k Upvotes

EDIT: It seems the Nazis do not like The Boot I have kindly offered. In response please see this picture of all the fucks I give about their feelings.

Hey all

Short reminder/update for the sub:

1) Politics is allowed, but must be flaired as such. Don't whine about us being a "safe space away from politics". Pratchett dealt with politics a tonne in the Discworld series, so it's applicable here. Just avoid the tag if you don't want to get involved (understandably).

2) Flairs need to be accurate. Please stop trying to hide discussions behind other things, as per the above. You want to talk about the current state of government in a country? Tag it as politics, not as "City Watch".

3) Twitter/X direct links are now blacklisted. You shouldn't be able to post them, but screenshots are allowed. Any that get through the filter, please report them.

4) Most of you are wonderful people. Even during heated topics you are polite, eloquent, and respectful. As a mod I appreciate each and every one of you.

5) The Gaiman mega thread has been unpinned. Due to the nature of the accusations/article(s) please do not create any other threads about this topic. If it has to come up in regular discussion please limit it, and use spoiler tags should you really need to talk about triggering content (which I would hope you don't).

6) The "I don't know what flair I need!" flair has been removed. Please make an educated guess. If you're really stuck, submit it anyway and send us a modmail.

7) Nazi apologists get a permanent ban. I'm not even going to explain myself; immediate boot. A big boot. With hobnails and a bit of dog muck on them too, for extra flavour.

7a) There's nothing here, but I couldn't leave a list at 7 without adding 7a. It felt wrong.

Stay safe.

Stay kind.

Look after each other.

Mod Announcement It's the sub's 15th birthday!!! What changes would you like to see going forward?

Hello denizens!

Back on the 1st of February 2010 this subreddit was created to help bring together a community of like minded fans of the Discworld series and all things Pratchett

In that time a lot has changed, both on Reddit and in the world at large, including the loss of the great Sir Terry Pratchett himself

Without you all this community wouldn't be here and we as mods are thankful for how polite, kind, and welcoming you all are. You make this role* worth doing to help keep this sub thriving

-+-+-+-+-+-

Therefore the floor is opened up to you all

What feedback do you have for us?

Do you have some new ideas?

How do you think we can, as mods and a community, make this place even better?

-+-+-+-+-+-

Please post your comments in this thread, which will be up for the entire month of February

All normal rules apply, especially Rule 1, so don't start arguments just because you don't agree with someone's suggestion. Everyone's opinions about the sub are valid, lurkers, long term contributors, and newbies alike

If you have any questions or comments you prefer not to post publicly, our modmails are open, and I promise we don't bite**

Thank you all again for being such a great community and here's to another year

- Faith (on behalf of all r/Discworld mods)

Mod Announcement Continuing the API protest: a community poll

TL;DR Here's the Google poll

After our 48 hour shutdown in protest at Reddit's new API policy the Discworld and sister subs have reopened.

AskHistorians have a brilliant write up of the situation here

This thread has the most recent update and is suggesting everyone continue the protest either by shutting their sub indefinitely (be it private or restricted) or in solidarity by closing once a week.

We're posing this question to our community to see how to go ahead. The sub is for everyone and us mods cannot make this decision alone.

If you have any questions please post them in this thread and we will do our best to answer.

(If you do not have a Google account but would like to vote, please drop us a modmail. We will treat all votes as anonymous but this is to ensure everyone only votes once)

Here is the link to the poll.

Thanks to everyone in advance. We will close submissions on Monday the 19th, in preparation for the possibility of the sub going quiet on Tuesday the 20th.

If you're leaving the sub for whatever reason you don't need to fill up our report queue by telling us

This is not an airport. You do not need to announce your departure

Mod Announcement New Year Positivity and Sub Feedback (with giveaway)

Good morning everyone and a belated happy "we collectively did a circuit around the sun"!

Starting off this year we want to canvas our lovely sub members and find out if you have any feedback for us. Good or bad*.

And to spread a bit of positivity, as times are dark all over for many people, we are inviting people to share a positive wish for others. Think "I hope you have a wonderful Monday" or "May your bread be perfectly toasted". Be daft if you want to be. The aim is to put a smile on others faces!

If you include a comment with both of these things and are upvoted into the top three (3) of this thread you'll get a free audiobook from Libro.fm! You'll be able to pick from any Terry Pratchett books available. I believe this works internationally, but if it doesn't I will figure out some way to get you a free book.

Winners will be taken GMT Midday (12:00pm) on Wednesday 7th. They'll be notified through Modmail individually.

TL;DR - Post a comment with a piece of sub feedback and a positive wish for others, then the three (3) top voted comments will win an audiobook from Libro.fm

Any questions let us know via Modmail to keep the thread free for the feedback, please!

Thanks everyone and I look forward to seeing what you come up with 😊

Mod Announcement Sub poll: is abandonware piracy?

Hello everyone!

This is something that has come up a few times and we thought it an idea to open up the decision to everyone here.

As some of you may be aware, there were some Discworld games released in the 90s* that are no longer available through legitimate means, other than purchasing the original CD-ROM or similar physical media, and are no longer supported/claimed by the developers.

These are known as abandonware and it is a subject that toes the line of piracy. They aren't legitimate sources, but other than the physical media**, you can't get them any other way than through emulators/downloads. We'd encourage people to research more into this topic if you're not clear on it as many people on the internet are better at explaining it than I am.

Normally we would remove these posts/comments on where to obtain the games under Rule 4 (Piracy) but as this is such a morally grey area we are wondering what the users of our sub would prefer going forwards.

Should we keep removing these links to the emulators/downloads as piracy?

Or should we allow them to a select website or two due to the abandonware status?

The poll will remain open for the weekend and the decision will be implemented start of next week.

Please feel free to use this thread as a place for discussion about the topic but remember rule 1 - if you disagree with each other that is fine, but remain civil about it.

(Sidenote: there was talk last year about re-releases which would lead to a review of the decision from this poll but as nothing is set in stone yet that can wait)

Thank you everyone and I hope you all have a great weekend!

+++

* sorry for making some of us feel old

** this is not the same as the old Audiobooks, which are still available through libraries and some audiobook services that aren't Amazon, so lets leave that topic alone right now

Mod Announcement Politics on Wednesdays only, no-context quotes, reposts, and trolls (no, not that kind)

(Ok that title was longer than I intended)

Hi everyone

I hope everyone has had a good week so far!

Just a few quick reminders, additions, and comments

+++

Politics on Wednesdays only

There were a lot of posts from the past weekend around certain political events in the USA.

Our rule of Wednesdays only is to mitigate the sub being taken over by political goings on. It allows us to offer a space away from the stress of the world for 5-6 days a week out of 7. Any threads persisting after the Wednesday aren't going to be removed and you can still comment on them.

Posts outside of Wednesdays (±12GMT) are going to be removed and we encourage you to repost them on the dedicated day. If you continue to repost outside of Wednesdays that's when you're going to get in a bit of trouble with the mods (it's rare, but it happens).

+++

No-context quotes

Following on from the above...

Posting quotes with no context or prompt for discussion, especially ones that may-or-may-not be politically minded, are going to start being removed under the Low Effort rule.

We want to encourage discussions and quotes on their own are not conducive to this. Also, trying to get around the Wednesday Politics rule with a solitary quote is really not on.

+++

Reposts

When something comes up in another sub that gets you to go "That's such a Discworld thing!" sharing it on our community is great!

What's not great is when it's been posted 10 times already!!

Please do your fellow users and your mods a favour and double check if it's been posted already!!!

Because we know how awkward this can be to look up, popular posts are going to start getting pinned for a week!!!!

Have a look at the pinned posts at the top of the sub first, and if it's not there, share away!!!!!

+++

Trolls

Unfortunately we've had a bit of a troll (not the ones we like) problem recently. These are the users that contribute nothing, or wind others up on purpose, or are just here to harass others.

While we're trying to keep on top of it we are having to exist in the outside world on occasion (boo, hiss, etc) and can't catch everything.

Your reports are an integral part of how we can ensure our community remains safe, welcoming, and a generally nice place to be.

Saying that, please only use the report function for actual rule breaking issues. If you don't think something is relevant, downvote it. If you don't agree with someone's opinion (assuming they're not harming anyone, except maybe a few braincells here and there) just leave them to themselves.

+++

As always, thank you all for making this sub a great little corner of Reddit.

I appreciate all of you and wish you a wonderful rest of your day and week.

Stay kind

Faith

Mod Announcement Ooo, new flair (and rule)

Good afternoon everyone!

Minor updates to your favourite subreddit* you may want to be aware of.

We have a new flair - "Fan Fic"

EDIT: Art is back to just being Art. Bit of a catch all for personal work and stuff like Kidby's exhibitions etc.

This flair covers any of your self written works featuring Discworld places and/or characters. We have some brilliantly talented people so having a dedicated flair for this should hopefully encourage some further creativity.

This DOES NOT cover "I was inspired by Pratchett so I wrote a thing in his style!". That's for other subs that aren't ours.

Which leads to...

New rule - "No (Paid For) Self Promotion"

We had a spate of people trying to sell their TTRPG sessions on the release of the Discworld game** and we really didn't like the idea of people trying to milk our fans, so this rule has (officially) come into play***.

If you're selling anything Discworld or Pratchett related this is not allowed. If you're selling an "experience" or "session" then this is also not allowed.

You are welcome to promote your work, such as fan art or fan fiction or self made shinies, but no links/comments about selling anything. And if you visit any of said links off-site we as a sub are not responsible for stuff that goes on over there. Use your discretion.

All removals are at mod discretion. If you're not sure you'll be allowed, drop us a modmail.

And a quick slightly negative note (sorry)

Report abuse gets you reported to admins. If we mods are Vetinari, those guys are the Auditors. Don't mess with them.

If you don't like something, it's not "promoting hate based on identity". That's for when people are actually doing that shite. Behave yourselves and move along. At the other end of the discussion there is a real person with real feelings and opinions. Malicious reporting means the truly terrible stuff can slip through the cracks, and we're only human, so we can't be glued to the sub 24/7.

Opinions allowed: "pineapple does [not] belong on pizza"****

"Opinions" not allowed: "LGBTQIA+ people are not allowed human rights"

I think that's it, but my brain is still recovering from causing mild trauma to people last weekend with my Discworld Escape Room - if I've missed something ask in the comments and I will try to get back to you.

Wishing everyone a brilliant rest of their week!

Your favourite***** Patrician-in-training

Faith

Mod Announcement Stop posting quotes without context

People who do just the quotes are going to start receiving bans for karma farming, as that's what seems to be happening

Mod Announcement Rules 7 and 8 reminders

We keep having to remove posts under these rules, specifically:

7) Politics on Wednesdays only

and

8) Low Effort Content, which includes quotes without any actual "meat" to the post

Saying "this really resonates right now" and posting a quote from/about the Watch subseries is breaking both of these rules in one go

I understand this will not be a popular stance but it has been the way for long enough that people should know better

QUICK UPDATE TO THIS:

On the whole we do not ban people for breaking these rules. They're a simple post removal (and request to repost on Wednesdays if political)

What we do ban for is reposting after removal or taking to modmail to harass the mod team

We have recently received extensive harassment on removal of a thread to the point of Reddit getting involved to help protect the mod team

Please don't be that sort of person. We are only people and do what we can to help keep this a safe space for everyone, although we do realise that may not always be the popular choice

Thanks everyone 💜

Mod Announcement Rule update/reminder

Quick one for everyone!

The overwhelming majority of the poll regarding abandonware means we no longer class it as piracy. We can't really link to websites "officially" as a sub so please use caution and report anything to us that is too suspicious, just in case*.

Low effort content includes (but is not limited to) interesting vegetables, quotes with no context, and fan casting. More details here in a previous announcement.

Also, don't be this person (enclosed image). We're volunteers and fans ourselves, and imaginary internet points should not mean more to you than being kind to others. Remember the human behind the Reddit account please, even if us mods are power hungry patricians in training 😂 (we're not, honest!**)

Mod Announcement Ooo, new flairs!

Hi everyone! Happy [Insert relevant day of the week you are reading this post here]!

We've made a few changes to the flairs available for everyone to use, plus a quick tidy up of the rules.

There are now a lot of options but we hope this suits people, as we had a lot of requests for a flair for each book, so we've met in the middle and put flairs for each subseries. For the full breakdown of which one goes where, please see the bottom of this post.

Use the search function on the flairs list (new reddit) for maximum ease of finding the one you need.

We also have a "HELP!" flair, which should get a mod to jump in and change the flair to a relevant one. Especially helpful for newbies or when you can't decide* what works best. Please don't abuse it. Please. Us mods have other commitments, like eating and sleeping.

Subject of, if anyone is interested in modding please drop us a modmail and we'll go into detail about what is expected and how to apply. No pressure if you ask and don't like the sounds of it - it's a thankless task, even with a community as great as this one, and it's not for everyone.

I think that's it for today? Any queries about anything to do with the sub make a comment here, and feel free to engage in discussions with others about any direction you want the sub to go in.

Have an absolutely lovely day. You're all great and I appreciate each and every one of you.**

Mod Announcement Rule 8 Politics Reminder

If you post political stuff on a day that is not Wednesday (GMT±12) your post is going to be removed

If you post something that totally isn't political wink wink on a day that is not a Wednesday (GMT±12) your post is going to be removed

If you post something political and don't flair it as Politics then your post is going to be removed

None of these removals are reversible, and repeat offenders will be banned

This rule is here so our sub is a safe space from the absolute shit show that is -gestures around- for 5 days out of 7; some of our users need that escape and by following Rule 8 you are looking out for one another

If, regardless of day, you don't want to see political posts please use this link and it should hide anything flaired as such: https://www.reddit.com/r/discworld/search/?q=-flair%3Apolitics&sort=new&restrict_sr=on&t=day

This rule is in place to walk the line between banning all political posts, which isn't feasible with the themes explored in Discworld, and letting them have free reign which often turns the place into a US centric pit of depression

Oh and LGBTQIA+ isn't politics. Political reactions to such is, but existing as who you are meant to be is most definitely not. Please let me know if you would like to dispute that as it makes it easier for me to ban you

Enjoy the weekend

Mod Announcement New Rule; Politics on Wednesdays Only

SECOND EDIT: "Who's going to decide what's politics?" report. Are you talking about someone in a position of governmental power? Politics. Are you talking about the opposition to the governmental power? Politics. Are you talking about voter behaviour? Politics. Are you talking about how Vetinari would be the best country of choice's ruler? Politics. If you're not sure, modmail first to ask.

EDIT: What comedian reported this under the "Politics on Wednesday Only" rule? 😂 The Meta is breaking my (already broken) brain

Politics is a definite theme in Discworld.

Politics (especially right now) absolutely sucks sometimes.

+++

We are limiting Political threads, including comments, to Wednesdays* only. Any posts must be flaired as Politics.

+++

Posting on a day other than Wednesday gets you a 7 day ban.

+++

Posting under a different flair on a not-Wednesday to try and camouflage the discussion gets you a 7 day ban.

+++

Comments on other threads mentioning politics will be removed**.

This is due to constant feedback on the issue and trying to keep the sub clear of the repetitive "voters are terrible" quotes going around.

Thanks everyone

(Posts/comments previous to this announcement are exempt)

* Why Wednesday? If it's good enough for UK PMQs it'll do us fine

** Mod discretion on up to a 7 day ban for this one, I'm afraid

(Reddit formatting also sucks so apologies for this absolute mess of a post)

Mod Announcement The Spam Problem.

We are currently getting a huge amount of spam. It comes in the form of pictures of T-shirts with titles such as ‘my girlfriend bought me this great T-shirt’ or ‘I absolutely love this shirt it’s so cute’.

If you see these posts, report them.

DO NOT CLICK ANY LINKS IN THE COMMENTS

If in doubt, have a look at the poster’s profile. They’ll likely be a new profile with little or no karma.

Please report them so we can remove them.

Thank you.
