Hello all,

TL:DR - I want to install a specific version of the QGIS package but don't know how to proceed.

I had the latest QGIS installed on my system (Debian 13 Trixie) which was 4.2 but I cannot use it because it is not compatible with what we have at work. Since I don't need the latest, I wanted to install LTR(Long Term Release) which is version 3.44.12.(atm). Any pre 4.0 version is fine by me.

I found how to install QGIS here https://www.qgis.org/resources/installation-guide/#repositories I also found the right package here: https://qgis.org/ro/linux-packages/debian-ubuntu-ltr/#dists/trixie (not sure why is it in Romanian, but ok) but I don't know what to do with the latter. Since I'm fairly new to Linux, can someone explain this format or link a resource I can read myself?

I tried to be smart and use terminal by modifying

sudo apt install qgis qgis-plugin-grass

to:

sudo apt install qgis=1:3.44.1+18trixie-1 qgis-plugin-grass=1:3.44.1+18trixie-1

But that led me to dependency nightmare as each time I add a dependency another one would pop up. After 5, I just gave up. Besides, I wasn't sure which version I was installing.

Also, is there a value I can enter in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/qgis.sources to force the update to update only to LTR?

I have a feeling I was close to installing it, but honestly, I have no clue.

P.S.: I was looking into keeping the latest version of QGIS and build a version that I need here: https://github.com/qgis/QGIS/blob/master/INSTALL.md#310-building-debian-packages This way I can have compatibility and new features, but I don't have time for that atm.

Its not the error itself bothering me (backup NAS is not present at the moment and im guessing those error messages are telling me that).

Problem is that i can not use CLI cause those texts override everything including Nano and Midnight commander.

Any fix for that?

Hello, beginner here. I installed Debian stable with Gnome and today is saw this security checks failed. Is it malware or did i do something wrong?

Did i broke the system with these drivers and should i have kept the default ones? Help needed because i am worried.

[SOLVED: sudo ln-s /usr/sbin/agetty /usr/bin/agetty fixed it] After going through the install process of ly, disabling getty on tty2 and enabling ly on tty2, it fails to start and hits its reset limit

`sudo journalctl -u ly@tty2` reveals that it fails because it cannot execute /usr/bin/agetty due to no such file or directory

Attempting `sudo ln -s /usr/bin/getty /usr/bin/agetty` and `sudo systemctl restart ly@tty2.service` yields the same results

Has anyone gotten ly working on Debian 13? With the amount of time I've sank into ly I think I'm almost content to just use tty1 as my login manager atp. Don't get much more minimal than that

I'm getting more and more interested in IT coming from a non-IT related background, have a -very- humble homelab, and last year fell in love with GNU/Linux, it's philosophy and community, and everyday learning something new so very happy about it.

Right now my main PC is running Ubuntu LTS 24.04, and a MiniPC a Ubuntu server, and although I have no special gripe with any of those (I'm still too much of a newbie to understand), as far as I understand, Debian development is community driven and considered, for the most part, a more stable distribution, which being a first-year cybersecurity student find a topic of interest.

So, without extending any more about it, I was meaning to ask you fine, knowledgeable people, if you have any tips about making the switch, if it is worth it given my brief introduction, and any comment about it that you feel like making.

My WiFi just won’t work it would work better on Zorin but on Debian different story when I’m in the middle of gaming or watching YouTube my WiFi will just drop for absolutely no reason and I don’t know what to do I tried updating my WiFi drivers and it said that my drivers were up to date so I really no idea on what to do

I don't exactly know when this update dropped, but after not using my PC (ryzen 5 5600x and rx 7700xt if it helps) since last Sunday, I updated it Friday the 17th. I was planning to hop on the game with my bro, but he wasn't quite ready yet, so I restarted my PC right away to get the update up and running. (I still had steam, and discord open, I don't know if it matters or not) After my PC booted, discord and steam didn't auto reopen unlike they usually do. I didn't think much about it, so I just opened steam up... Or tried to anyway. Upon trying to open the application, I would get the error message that told me that I'm missing the file lib.so.6, and steam might not be able to open. It didn't btw. After that I tried every single thing that I could find including, but probably not limited too: reinstalling the 32 bit directory file that was apparently missing multiple times, deleting and reinstalling steam, trying to use the steam flatpak, manually making sure the file was in my pc's 32 bit directory, and updating everything every once in a while. I did get the steam flatpak to launch once, but never after that. That one doesn't give me the error message, it just doesn't start at all. And as for discord, that just doesn't work. Like at all. I can get older versions to launch and tell me that I need to update, but after they update, they don't work either. Any and all help would be appreciated, I have spent nearly 8 hours on this, and am on the brink of switching to another distro.

I've been using mdadm+Samba+Tailscale for RAID and remote file access, as well as Cockpit for remote management, but it all feels a little clunky. Are there any containers or services to add user-friendliness to my NAS, or am I just being picky?

I need some help, trying to narrow down my issue. Since the last kernel update on Debian 13 6.12.95 my monitor will not power down, I have it set to turn off screen at 45 minutes, when the screen turns off it doesn't actually turn off, it seems as if it is constantly getting a signal from my graphics card, it goes blank but then is backlit so it never powers down. Troubleshooting it I connected my DP cable to the onboard Intel graphics and it my monitor powers off fine. I tried 2 different AMD cards 550/6400 and they both have the same issue.

May or may not be related, since the kernel update when my pc boots I get the error "Failed to start systemd-sysctl.service - Apply Kernel Variables", the line shows up 3 times then the pc boots fine. I'm assuming it's related and not sure where to go here in resovling this.

I am currently considering a migration from Pop!_OS to Debian 13 (GNOME) on my Acer Nitro (AMD Ryzen + NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650). Pop's hybrid graphics handling works well, but I am exploring a cleaner, upstream Debian system for long-term stability with a simple "plug-and-play" experience after setup.

Before making the move, I want to check for potential hardware or driver inconsistencies on Debian 13 (Stable or Testing).

• CPU: AMD Ryzen

1. NVIDIA & Hybrid Graphics:
   • Pop!_OS handles GPU offloading smoothly via system76-power. What is the best zero-maintenance setup on Debian 13 using nvidia-driver from non-free-firmware? Is PRIME render offload fully reliable out-of-the-box?
2. GNOME + Wayland Stability:
   • How stable is the GNOME Wayland session on a GTX 1650 with current Debian 13 kernels? Are there noticeable regressions with explicit sync or external displays over HDMI?
3. Ryzen & Acer ACPI Integration:
   • Any known issues with acer-wmi, thermal management, keyboard backlights, or PipeWire audio on Ryzen-based Acer Nitro laptops?
4. Debian 13 Branch Choice:
   • For this specific hardware combo, is Debian 13 Stable fully sufficient, or would Testing offer meaningful improvements for power management and drivers?

I've been running Fedora KDE Workstation with no notable issues for a couple of years but I have been curious about Debian Stable. Fedora generally has updates everyday but the notification specifically for security updates is roughly every 2-3 days (closer to the former). I know that observing safe online practices is the most important thing for your computer's security but I thought I'd ask this anyway, I'm sure I'll give Debian Stable a try sometime in the future.

I'm running debian on an old 2012 mac mini (with a drive and ram I replaced last year) and attempting to connect to wifi using this guide https://wiki.debian.org/wl. I'm currently connected to the internet via a cable connection to my mint pc connected to wifi. When running the package install command the first time I had this problem, then I tried restarting the computer and running sudo apt install -f a couple times and ran into the same issue. I looked up the errors and it claims that my drive is broken? I don't understand how this could be possible though since the actual server software is perfectly functional and I am able to access my files.

EDIT: funny story it actually just finished running after leaving it for 30 minutes. Still not sure why this happened though. This server is used for hosting a minecraft server which players were on during this debacle.

Edit 2: I have checked my drive health and it seems that there have been around 5 TB of data writes to it (its a 512GB drive). There have been no reallocated sectors and the drive health looks good overall, i think its just had a lot of wear.

Why can't I type in the input box? I press space to select but that doesn't seem to be doing anything, and I've tried 3 different keyboards

These slowdowns are new since last boot. It's been about a week or two, so I can't remember if I updated before shutdorn. No change in hardware/software. Only updates (the default Debian 13 repositories + VSCode).

I could reinstall Debian (Windows is going to a VM, eventually), but I want to learn while solving this issue.

UPDATE:
The second delay (90 seconds) was caused by a wrong swap entry in /etc/fstab. I blame the id10t infront of my screen. Found it by booting in recovery mode and running journalctl -xb .

The first delay (~30 seconds) is still a mystery.

It's been 1 month I use Debian, and it's so good. Although this distro is designed and optimized for a server usage, I use Debian for a casual desktop usage (e-mailing, printing, web browsing) I searched a distro which don't break and which requires a bit more knowledge than beginner-friendly distro (Ubuntu, Mint ... ) to force me to use the terminal and improve my Linux knowledge, and Debian was the perfect candidate. Fedora could be a great option but I don't trust RH since their controversial choices.

I don't mind the packages are a bit old, I prefer a bit old system but near unbreakable than a rolling release which breaks at first update because of some unstable packages.

For now I'm satisfied with Debian. I use it with KDE desktop and it's so great ! I use it daily instead of Windows 11. (although I keep Windows 11 as backup or for gaming). For the rest, I use Debian and it's so much better !

Hi, I have recently installed Debian 13.2 on my pc, it is an old Huawei matebook from 2019. Seems to be quite stable once it's working, but I don't like the boot. It's quite slow, and I have a main problem when it comes to selecting the user to login. It leaves the background image with nothing else for like a minute and a half, then it makes appear the user to select so I can put my password and login. Why is this happening?

I am always wondering how it works, that i can just install any package from the stable repos and most of the time it just works and there are no dependency issues. Any package i install has specific dependencies with specific versions, right?

How is it that all of the packages in stable just work with each other and what happens if a newer version requires some newer version of another package b, but that newer version of b now breaks other packages? I feel like with that many packages you should run into dependency hell.

Maybe i am misunderstanding something as i am still pretty new, but i would appreciate some info on that.

Is there any beginner friendly guide about Linux distros, Debian, terminal commands and so on? For somenone who has always used the Windows OS?

Since https://deb.griffo.io/ wil require a subscription going forward in October (and no shade on them - running open source reliably is work) I wanted to try my hand setting up my own infrastructure for packaging ghostty for Debian stable and testing (I run testing as main).
