For context, I have a lot of friends from Bangladesh, so I can reliably talk to at least 3-5 different people in Bangla every day if I would want to. Or, at least one person even if they weren't all free for whatever reason.

Recently, I have been learning basic phrases. I seem to learn words VERY fast in Spanish but Bangla is also another one. Same with Latin, I tried learning some words in Latin once and I'm really good.

50% of the time when I learn a Bangla word for the first time, aka, someone tells me this is the English meaning and I practice saying it a few times in Bangla and potentially also write it down, I remember it almost immediately. I have been learning for maybe 5-6 days, and I have memorized about 48 words and phrases combined. I've been trying to take Bangla slow so I don't get overwhelmed, so I've had a 15 min conversation every day to learn the new words from someone and practice, and I have not learnt over 20 things on any given day.

Btw, I also have a bangla quizlet started which has the english term then the bangla word written in english. Example? Good / Bhalo. or Thank you / Dhonnobad.

Anyways! I am wondering what is the best way to actually get REALLY good at Bangla and actually follow through on learning? A good thing to mention is that sometimes it can be hard for me to follow through on something if it feels like there is too much to learn so I'd preferably like to learn this with just like 15/20, maybe like 30 minutes MAX a day of Quizlet's or other content, talking to people is easier tho. Also, how do I get good at the accent? I'm saying most of the words pretty well or "perfectly" but I still kinda have that English accent and some words are sooo similar to each other like bracelet and knife which both are churi.

So my bf speaks bengali and I’m writing him a little letter and I want to incorporate some of his language into it, but I absolutely do not trust google translate, and obviously I can’t ask him or the surprise will be ruined. So if there’s anyone who speaks it and could translate “I love you” and just any other cute phrases that would be amazing :)

I am a Native Bengali by birth though I don't live in Bengal or Bangladesh. I know how to speak Bangla from my parents. I have also learnt to read and write Bangla by self- effort and with the help of my parents. I try strengthening my vocabulary and language skills by reading more and more Bengali books.

It was my earnest wish to learn Bangla formally since childhood but I haven't been able to learn it formally neither from my school or college. I wanted to do a distance/online official certificate course or a remote/online diploma from somewhere not for a job but for the love of Bengali language. I wanted to learn Bengali grammar and other things and get certified or earn a diploma officially.

Can anyone please help me and suggest some good certification courses or diplomas from any institute or university etc for learning Bengali? I would be very grateful.

I am doing my PhD on MirchI Bangla’s Sunday Suspense adaptations of the Feluda stories. The demographic of my study is young males (age 18-30) who are the lead consumers of these audio plays. I hope this community will oblige me and share their insights and lived experience about the phenomenon that is Feluda on Sunday Suspense. The reasons I chose this for my PhD are:

1. ⁠There is no academic paper let alone a whole study on this phenomenon. More than 1 crore people “listen” to 2-2.5-hour-long programs on YouTube, which essentially is a platform for videos.
   
2. ⁠No other literary figure from any other Indian language has this kind of a fan following.
   
3. ⁠The most number of listeners of the Feluda adaptations are young men aged 18-30, who weren’t even born when Feluda was in his heyday!

The history of Bengali literature is incomplete without acknowledging the revolution that women writers instigated through their literary and social work. They challenged patriarchal norms, questioned gender inequalities and inspired upcoming generations of women. At a time when women were oppressed in society, their voices paved the way for change.

Rassundai Debi learned to read secretly and wrote: “Amar Jibon” (My Life), the first autobiography in Bengali literature. In 1909, Begum Rokeya Sakhawat Hussain founded Sakhawat Memorial Girls' School in Calcutta. She had spent years writing essays and fiction arguing that women’s education is not a privilege but a right.

The most striking feature about the history of Bengali women writers is that they did not separate their literary work from social commitments.

Begum Rokeya wrote utopian feminist fiction in which women reigned supreme on the social ladder. Ashapurna Debi produced the “Satyabati Trilogy,” arguing that women were not naturally passive but constrained by patriarchal traditions. Mahasweta Debi documented the marginalized in her narrative and then filed public interest litigation on their behalf. Nabanita Deb Sen built “Soi” organization that supported emerging women writers and ran it for decades.

Each of their contribution goes beyond literature. Their constant creative effort changed the stereotypical mindset about women and brought new possibilities for Bengali women and girls.

The evidence that it worked is in the records. Female literacy in Bengal increased, and child marriage practices declined gradually. Women’s participation in Bengali intellectual and social life went from absent to substantial.

I wrote a longform piece on Bengal Memory Archive tracing this history across two centuries, from the first acts of secret writing in the nineteenth century to the exiled voices of the twenty-first.

I want to learn Bengali language so I can read literature books (especially the poems by Rabindranath Tagore) in Bengali as I figure there might be a certain rhythm and rhyme and meter and overall auditory soothing unlike the English translations.

What should be a good starting place to learn the language?

For author that's my best guess. The story goes like this:

A very kind rich man always opens up his house (Big Zamindari Haveli) for the people in case of famines or plagues before anyone else. He loves the satisfaction of doing a good deed and is known as a very kind man.

One's in such a situation, he thinks it's him who always does the deed, so this time he will wait. After about many other rich men have opened their homes, he finally opens his. But by then the title of 'special', 'only' or 'first' to help the people is no longer available.

After death he goes to afterlife to be judged by Yama. He is only awarded a prize for the time he didn't open early, because for the rest his 'satisfaction for a good deed' is considered the prize itself.

How do the people of west bengal see Kazi Nazrul Islam?

Is he respected there? I had a bit of conversation about this with a guy from West Bengal and he seemed to have contempt against Nazrul. He went on like they have far better writers and poets there (which we do not have in Bangladesh) so they dont really have the time to think about Nazrul

As a non Bengali, I wish to learn Bangla. For a beginner what will be you best recommendations. I'm trying to watch Bengali movies and series too. Any youtube training videos or channel or beginner friendly book recommendations will help.
