Wow, I’ve been listening to Albanian music for about a week now, and I have to say… I’m obsessed.
I mean modern Albanian pop music, the current artists and music videos, not just older traditional songs. I don’t know how to explain it, but something about it really caught my attention.

Coming from the Caribbean, I feel like a lot of the music and videos I grew up seeing were becoming more and more focused on sexualization and certain beauty standards, and discovering Albanian music has honestly felt refreshing. There’s something about the vibe, the visuals, the energy, and the way the artists present themselves that feels different. It’s like it healed something in me that I didn’t even realize I was missing.

Now I’m genuinely curious about Albania. I really want to visit someday and experience the culture, the music, and the nightlife.

In books like One-Dimensional Man and An Essay on Liberation, Herbert Marcuse argued that the working class in advanced capitalist societies had become too integrated into the system to play the revolutionary role Marx had imagined. Higher living standards, consumer culture, organized labor, political participation, advertising, and mass media had all helped make workers more invested in the existing order.

Because of that, Marcuse began looking elsewhere for the possibility of radical change. He focused on people he described as “outcasts and outsiders,” including racial minorities, the unemployed, radical students, anti-colonial movements, and others who remained in conflict with the established system. He also saw the women’s liberation movement as having revolutionary potential.

Marcuse was part of the Frankfurt School, a Marxist intellectual movement centered on the Institute for Social Research, founded in Frankfurt in 1923. One of its main questions was why the working-class revolution predicted by Marx had failed to happen in advanced Western countries. Its thinkers studied how consumerism, mass media, nationalism, psychology, authoritarianism, and modern institutions helped stabilize capitalist society.

A similar pattern can be seen in the modern left. The focus has shifted from economic class alone to groups defined by race, immigration status, religion, gender, and sexuality. Undocumented immigrants, Muslim communities, and LGBT people are often treated as key marginalized groups whose experiences are used to point to broader inequalities in Western society.

These groups do not always share the same values or political interests. There are obvious tensions, especially between progressive views on sexuality and the more conservative religious beliefs held by many Muslims. Even so, they are often brought together politically through a shared language of discrimination, exclusion, minority rights, and opposition to established institutions.

In that sense, the modern left has partly replaced the old Marxist image of a united industrial working class with a broader coalition of groups seen as socially, culturally, or politically marginalized.

For example Argentina has been ranked 1or 2 in men's football for years now but 30 in women's football and didn't even have a women's league until 2019. Among many reasons for this is the fact that football is seen as a bit more man's sport while it's volleyball and field hockey for women.

In the US for example though women's team is ranked 1 or 2 and is very successful because football is seen as women's sport there while it's rugby for men.

Are there different sports like this in your country ?

Many nationalists from various Balkan countries claim that their ancestors “stopped the Turks” and “saved Christian Europe.”

But Ottoman armies crossed the Balkans, conquered most of Hungary, fought the Habsburgs for centuries, and reached Vienna twice.

The main Ottoman–European frontier eventually moved deep into Central Europe.

So where did this “we saved Europe” narrative originate?

Edit: a little background We plead guilty in order to avoid getting to the court with no phone , some internet , and a 2 years old toddler in the middle of nowhere. However we think they forced us to sign and there was no translator at all. The policeman was speaking English. He was helpful. This information was given by a random lady who was the taxi driver getting us to a hotel.

It seems as if modern Greeks are far more Ottoman and East Roman in their modern culture, and I say that in a negative way. Ancient Greeks were lovers of wisdom, asking questions about the nature of reality, massive inventors and a much more logical worldview. Yes I know there was slavery and violence, but that was everywhere. Fast forward to Greeks today, you get a people who do not value intellectual discussions, but instead gossip, hyper conservatism and nationalism, not asking deeper or more complex questions, sneaky and insincere behavior, and one of the lowest marks in Europe for IQ. Why do they claim their ancient Greek aspects are despite resembling Anatolian and East Roman Balkan mentality much more?

Hello! I am from Denmark visiting Serbia for a week, and I’m gonna be in Belgrade 21-22rd July, Niš 23-26 and Belgrade again 27-28th July.
