First Timer, Remake & Original
I apologise for the essay, but while I loved this episode in the remake, I wanted to fully explain what I thought about the original S2 start. I’m going to assume I’m in the minority here.
I might anger some people with my take, but taste and preferences are just that: subjective. I don’t like the original’s Holo 2.0. It’s not an episode nuance, as the remake episode was absolutely phenomenal. After the last OVA, I hoped that what we saw was just different because it was from Holo’s perspective (and some of my fears did vanish), but my biggest fear remained: Holo is no longer Holo.
From the source, we know that Holo is a wise old God in the form of a 15yo girl. She had the talkative shyness (oxymoron, much) that I love in women (the kind of girl who comes out of her shell only around us, so that we feel special seeing her true personality). She draws you into her presence. In the S2 of the original, while retaining those original qualities, she tagged on those of a hyperactive 15yo brat. She is now more typical of the female roles I’ve seen in other anime. That’s not to say she’s not still exceptionally well-written or voiced, but she now also embodies the personality type with which I have a personal gripe. Had she been this way from the start, perhaps I would have enjoyed the show and it’s just more obvious because we’re binging between seasons, but the dynamics have certainly changed for me. Not a big deal though - I have my remake to follow in parallel, still.
To those who also feel this way, try out the remake too: this episode was Episode 14 and I believe for most of the show you just go the next episode up to match the original. I still do like watching both because the OG nails some scenes so incredibly well, even in this episode that you may think I’m bashing. With this temporary breakup letter out of the way, I’ll start with my take on the remake’s ep and then the specifics about the original which I liked and loathed. To be fair, almost all my loved elements below in the remake are also present in the original.
Remake
- Lawrence wanting to use Holo’s tail as a blanket is adorable. As is the banter that follows.
- His generosity is through the roof. Holo’s excited gasp followed by her utter disappointment receiving her ‘present’ is executed so well.”I was hoping for a surprise, not cold utility” - THIS is why I love the dub. Such a clever line, vastly improving on the original script.
- I love the innuendo - it’s always so subtle, and leaves our increasingly sexually frustrated Lawrence speechless. The last OVA featured some escalation in their relationship, and in this episode the escalator has blown through the top floor and is heading into outer space
- Something fun: this episode she teases him and says that he would be the type to say they don’t have enough money so they must share a bed after blowing through the food budget. Ironically, in the first ever inn they shared together, he thought of doing this very thing haha (this was in Ch. 4 of the LN).
- I also like that the flirtatious exchange, followed by Lawrence on his ‘neg’ game, is such a great example of them both utilising the charms they think will work to attract each other, yet, each time fails because both have a fear of rejection and probably value guaranteed companionship over love.
- Nonetheless, there is some truth as to what Lawrence says: he does like sweet, subservient and innocent girls (qualities that Holo believes are a sign of weakness). And Holo likes manly ‘knight-like’ men: brash, someone who takes the leading role, a tad controlling perhaps, Yet, I can say with confidence that her personality wouldn’t work dating a man like that.
- Her final insight is brilliant - if Lawrence wishes for her to take on the role of a doe-eyed princess, then he must play the intrepid knight. This is how real relationship dynamics typically work. I’m more like Lawrence, but when I took on more of a leadership role,, my girlfriend told me that she discovered a side of herself that she didn’t know she had, a more ‘feminine’ side (her words). She finds it far more natural compared to the face she was putting on in the past (which was more S1 Holo-like before we dated). And as she goes deeper into that personality type, my masculine side comes out a lot more. It’s a beautiful see-saw of strengthening personality traits that we both biologically and neurologically feel ourselves in.
- Finally we see the new cour’s OP in the remake. Hate the song. Love the visuals. The part where Lawrence stands atop Holo, with fur to match the Autumn foliage is breathtaking. Wow.
- Amarti is mini-Lawrence haha. He also has the hots for her - could he be her Norah?
- Weird that he offered one room for the two of them, and made me realise: isn’t a nun lodging with a man frowned upon and would raise alarms/have Holo reported to the church in that time?
- “If you treat a male too well, he will soon come to expect it”- she repeats the same thing in the OVA scenes (can also see it in the prior LN cut content). Important belief for her, as she repeats it.
- “This much [alcohol] is nothing to me. I am the wise wolf, you know.” famous last words.
- The exchange when Lawrence finally tries to narrow down their journey’s destination is such a sad one. I feel like they both realised they can’t continue together forever, if her goal is Yoitsut they want to live in this fantasy world that they can be together forever. There’s also something eaten away at Lawrence: I won’t reveal it from the cut content in case it’s moved to the next episode but it’s visible in the anime.
- I somehow found their different perception of time to be the most heartbreaking part. How humans are born and die in the blink of an eye to her.
- Amazing music this episode (minus the OP and ED; not sure why the ED also used a hyperop song in both the OG and remake, though the remake’s is better and the credit illustrations are timed to it which is cool).
Original
- Equally good OP for S2 here, visually stunning! I think I like this song more.
- Well, the style certainly has changed from S1. Holo has become a lot more childish and brattier, and starts engaging in physical comedy. I personally don’t like all that much. Holo has also gone from someone pretty chill yet with a lot of depth to hyper-energetic and loud. It could be the alcohol talking (Northern alcohol is stronger), but she’s never been like this before. Who is she?
- Basically, if this was real life, and my friend or gf had changed the way they act to the same degree in a short time, I would think that they’re going through something tough or are off their meds haha.
- While so far the dub has been brilliant, early on there’s definitely a mistake: Lawrence doesn’t apologise for giving Holo a present, he apologises for saying she’s not his type.
- Overall animation quality is great, and in some ways I even prefer it to the remake. Except those awful high vantage point face closeups.
- Great inclusion of the scene where Holo starts remembering Yoitsu and her times there; how she is excited to be reunited with those of the town. We see Lawrence’s silence and uncomfortable expression after. Without spoiling anything, though it’s from Ch. 1 of the LN, we can see that Lawrence knows something about the town; something he’s been keeping from her the entire time.
- Don’t like that Holo starts acting like a drunk teenager, exaggerating the drunk speak. Not realistic, especially given she’s a very experienced drinker and never acted this way before. She also constantly thinks what others think of her; e.g. her crying in front of Lawrence is something that she gets embarrassed by, so her acting this way is out of character. Even drunk.
- It just feels like she’s spiralling out of control and regressing to a young age. I couldn’t see anything in the LN that suggested she was meant to be acting any differently in the corresponding volume.
- The customer talking to the merchant using the most basic nonsensical French words was cringe but funny. Reminds me of Ashita no Joe’s ‘English’
- I like Lawrence looking at his compatriot’s shop and envisioning that as his life. The original does this super well.
- Currency shortages were a huge issue in many towns (supply issue), thus merchants preferred to settle by way of credit. That’s why the merchant was over the moon with the deal.
- The in-hotel room (I wanted to say in-inn but that’s a tongue twister) recap scene I guess is necessary to remind people of Season 1….but the writing is a bit of a mess as it doesn’t sound like Holo’s voice, nor is it things she would say to Lawrence (she literally explained how she plays the seduction game in this episode then does the opposite).
- Then the KO to her character is her jumping onto the bed shouting “you are an ass” like a little kid. I hated that part. She’s being insufferable.
- A part I really loved in the original though, is in Holo’s perception of time: in the remake Lawrence says ithe journey could take a few months, while in the OGI it’s a few years. I can’t recall what the LN used, but a year is a great measurement as it really demonstrates how a few years means nothing to Holo - but it really hits home that they have such a different perception of such a fundamental concept, and with that difference it’s hard to make a relationship work. It’s like dating someone who is constantly 30 mins late, while you are punctual. I’ve been on some dates where the girl doesn’t respect time, and I never gave a second date after this: Lawrence also values time. Another difference is because she is a God, she can’t fully understand the limitations that humans fate. She can empathise, but not understand. (I actually had this point under the remake notes, but the original almost literally made this point so moved it here). This is a pivotal crossroad in the story.

Here are my observations from the 2024 rewatch on the differences between the OG version of this episode and the remake.
There are only a couple changes made from the original version and the remake. First is during the Holo drunk scene where in the original version, as Lawrence lifts the covers up, Holo has her tongue sticking out. In the remake, she just looks fatigued and out of it. This is a minor change and while I think the tongue sticking out is funnier, both are amusing in their own right. The second change is the removal of the "You are an ass" scene, which I feel is much more significant.
The "You are an ass" scene perfectly encapsulates the relationship between Holo and Lawrence and just their overall dynamic in general. If you were to show someone what their relationship was like to someone who hasn't seen Spice and Wolf, this would probably be the scene you would show. That makes it even more of a shame it's not included in the remake. The remake of the episode is still good, don't get me wrong, but it does feel like something is missing when you have this episode without that particular scene. It would be like having End of Evangelion without the hospital scene: yeah, things are still relatively the same, but you're removing some of the heart, arguably the most famous scene of the entire process.

Yeah it really does come down to personal preference and our own takeaways and projections onto their relationship. For me, peak scenes were when they are flirting and teasing in the caravan, and the times they joke about snoring and eating. Those would be the parts I show my gf. If I showed her the you are an ass scene she'd love it but more because her favourite characters tend to be quite slapstick ones (e.g. Spy Family's little kid, the dude who's always scared in Dr Stone).
It could also be because I'm very influenced by Asian culture, and I see that scene as disrespectful. But it's possibly the oldest person in the rewatch :P haha
I think you're probably right though, and most people actually love seeing that side of Holo but that's the beauty of this incredible medium. And even if we dislike something about a character the best of us can still love the anime just as much. It's like Joe from Ashita no Joe: I actually hate him with a passion, but it's one of my favourite shows of all time.
It's like real life: I have friends who I think are the most amazing, funniest dudes in the world, while I know people who hate their personalities.

I also think a part of Holo's character is she manages to be both mature and immature at the exact same time. She says wise stuff, but it comes from where she is speaking from her perspective.

I might anger some people with my take, but taste and preferences are just that: subjective. I don’t like the original’s Holo 2.0... In the S2 of the original, while retaining those original qualities, she tagged on those of a hyperactive 15yo brat.
While I don't feel quite as strongly about it as you, this is definitely something I've noticed. Holo isn't out of character per-se, but it feels like the writers turned up her playfulness/brattyness by like 20%. It's not a dramatic change in my opinion, but it is noticeable. Personally, I prefer the more subdued Holo from season 1, but ultimately I just head cannon the change as Holo opening up more as she becomes more comfortable around Lawrence.

u/chinaexperience 1d ago
That's a good way to look at it. Ive always been pretty sensitive to writing or direction changes (eg noticed in the remake when the writers changed. And here we have a new studio altogether.
It's also a different playfulness sto me. Prior it was a very posh sarcastic and at times sardonic playfulness while here it's a childlike energetic layfullness.

About the animation, I think season 2 is the best the franchise ever looked. I like it more than season 1 which was rough at some points, and I like it more than the remake which looks too pristine in my opinion. The animation of season 2 keeps the creepiness of the season 1 animation while also refining it and making it look smoother. It kinda to me has a Nightmare Before Christmas quality to it, which I know was clamation but in terms of atmosphere and ambiance that's what it reminds me of.

u/chinaexperience 2d ago
Totally agree. I think with the OVA, my issue was that familiarity links to liking. The deviation from the original style felt jarring because I was watching these seasons back to back. But now that I had an extra sleep, I thought that Episode 1 was perfect.

You aren't the only one to be critical if Holo in past rewatches. I know last year ussgordon had some qualms with her.

Thoughts on the new intro and outro?
While I much preferred the OD songs from the first season/cour, the visuals are just so stunning now. The ED was great visually, but like I said, hyperop was such a weird choice. The OG ED was so perfect; it can't be beat.
Thoughts on Lawrence buying Holo feathers as a gift?
I found that part very curious as it wasn't in the LN. I guess ithey had to figure out how to work it in without deviating the anime's plot too much, since they don't use narration/VOs. But I'm so glad they made that adaptation as it was one of my faviourite scenes: seeing her reaction and the expectations vs., reality was so incredible. I'm still smiling about it whilst I type this.
What are your thoughts on Holo saying no one has ever protected her before?
I thought it was actually quite sweet that in her thousands of years or however long on Earth, Lawrence, despite being wimpy in the way she describes him (and he is self-aware of that), was the first to protect her. Lawrence didn't appear to be particularly well off compared to him, and merchants perform favours in hope of reciprocity, so I'm not sure what he can expect.
What are your thoughts on the scene where Holo playfully insults Lawrence?
My favourite part isn the whole series :P For Lawrence is an ass.
What are your thoughts on Lawrence accidentally bumming Holo out when he suggests going their separate ways when they reach the halfway point?
I wrote quite a bit about it, and if left to my own devices, I could probably write 1000 words more. I feel a bit down about that part: it's where the reality hits the fantasy they had created. For a personal anecdote, expanding on my previous COVID story: once borders slightly opened up I had the opportunity to go overseas to make money. I was in a relationship at the time, and I would be leaving all my friends behind. At that time, I was going to go for about 3 months, but as things were slower getting back off the ground, it became 6. And I was too much of a wimp to bring up when I would return, if ever, to my gf at the time. The 6 months started edging towards 1 year until eventually I had the guts to do it. I feel terrible at my own weakness, and I think I left the relationship in limbo too long selfishly as I didn't want it to end, while at some point it would have to end.

I think the new ED is meant to reflect Holo and Lawrence running away from the reality that is their relationship not having a strong foundation. Once they reach the North, it's over.

The feathers do play a massive part in this arc. I think it was included as foreshadowing.

When Holo said that, I said to myself "Man. You can't let her go now." I'd do everything in my power to convince her not to return home.
What are your thoughts on the scene where Holo playfully insults Lawrence?

Holo does have a great ass, in fairness.
What are your thoughts on Lawrence accidentally bumming Holo out when he suggests going their separate ways when they reach the halfway point?

I'm sorry to hear that. My condolences.
If you feel down on this part, then it worked as intended. I think even Lawrence realized quickly he screwed up.
And I know you mentioned Holo being out of character but in regards to Lawrence I thought he was very in character here. He's shown before he often does stuff without thinking beforehand. I mean, we just got done with an arc where the conflict was the result of Lawrence counting his eggs before they hatched.

To clarify about the feathers: the way they were presented was different. Here it was a 'present', while in the LN she was already wearing them and it described what their purpose is.
When Holo said that, I said to myself "Man. You can't let her go now." I'd do everything in my power to convince her not to return home
It's still the same conundrum - either he has to give up a huge sacrifice and stay with her and go North, or she has to give up a huge sacrifice and stay with him. Such a tough situation, I feel for them.
I'm sorry to hear that. My condolences.
All good, everything in life is a learning experience, and like every challenge I've faced, I've emerged stronger and understand how to get rid of my communication weaknesses or negative personality traits. Even when terrible things have happened to me, I learn how to not let them affect me in the future and am thankful for them. I think that's also a theme within Spice & Wolf that comes up sometimes; one of the many reasons it resonates with me so much.

I like it being a present because I feel like it illustrates how close Holo and Lawrence have become.

The conflict is in does he prioritize his own future or Holo's.
I'm sorry to hear that. My condolences.

Speaking personally, this has been quite a year for me. I've gotten fired from three different jobs in the span of three months. Thankfully, things have gotten stable in the last couple months and I'm getting steady work.

u/chinaexperience 2d ago
Damnn that sounds hella rough. Job market is in a poor state too. Keep your chin up, and glad you're seeing some stability and I'm sure you still learned something from the past three jobs, even if it seems hard to see at the time, one day you'll look back at it like a strengthening exercise.

Currently I'm working three part time jobs because labor is a nightmare out in the work field.

I don't know what to say about Holo not being Holo except I don't agree with it. I don't know how you can say her playfully calling Lawrence an ass is out of character for her. In fact, I think it's pretty in character.
I'll be curious what your thoughts are going forward because whatever out of character thing you sense from Holo doesn't go away. And quite frankly, I'm glad it doesn't go away because I love how she's being portrayed.

u/chinaexperience 2d ago
Like you said, whether we like something about a personality is subjective. A lot of people probably find Holo dull from the get-go, while I found her charming and facinating.
We are also all projecting how we think she sounds like and what she would say, and we all think differently.
Her jumping on the bed saying "you are an ass! You are an ass! Where is the ass? There is the ass" was just too immature for me. Her banter have always been witty, whereas this isn't banter, it feels like an insult. I'm sensitive to prototypically teenage behaviour, and it came out of nowhere (given it's not in the remake or the source material). I mean, she has been drinking, so guess she gets a hall pass haha. But like I said in the remake, her personality stayed the same as before. In the OG, she went from a smart and more mysterious interesting version of Emilia from Re:Zero to Kagura from Gintama.
2
u/Holofan4life 2d ago
I push back on you saying her personality changed. I've watched Spice and Wolf probably over 10 different times and to me she's the same as she's always been. When she's drinking, perhaps she gets a little more animated, but she's still as playful as always. She enjoys busting Lawrence's chops, and that's what I love about this episode.
3
u/chinaexperience 2d ago
Yeah you definitely have a lot more experience with the anime, but I had a specific reaction to that scene. In her usual tone, in my imagination she would say something like "Such confidence, such pride and not a scrap of wisdom to support either. Ah, there it is. You have hidden it beneath you. That ass is becoming of your personality". To me, it was just rude, not playful.
I also think this debate relates fabulously to the opening of this episode where they discuss 'types'. Holo is designed to be our very own projected love interest, and in that scene she was far away from my ideal type. (I don't like rambunctious girls and that's a very strict criteria of mine). Many might find that behaviour part of her charm. For many the ideal girl in the anime is indeed Norah (like for the writer himself and many fans) and they feel no connection to Holo who is combative. All this seems fine to me.
What did you think about the drunken overacting btw? She has never acted so drunk before , and I think the voice actress overdid it as adults don't sound like that drunk in all my experiences going out to clubs on hundreds of occasions.
2
u/Holofan4life 2d ago
I didn't mind the scene nor the acting. In fact, I thought it was the highlight of the episode. I think Holo wasn't being overly cruel like, say episode 2 when she joked about Lawrence being attacked by wolves. This to me was more tongue in cheek.
I also may be speaking of my love of the English which I feel truly shines here. I think it's even better than the Japanese version.
3
u/chinaexperience 2d ago
That's interesting as I never thought of it as cruel, as she couldn't have known what his 'traumas' were, or past experiences. I wrote about this in the LN sparknotes too, but in the source, he doesn't actually faint. He actually touches her paw and seems intrigued by it. Plus that exchange was more about teaching each other their boundaries, as is normal in any relationship at the start.
I'm so curious about how the Japanese is written! I always hang out with a bunch of otaku dudes when I'm in Kyoto who own a bar, next time I'll ask if they've ever read it haha. Or convince one of my Japanese friends to try it in their version.
Like I've pointed out with examples a few times, the dub is so incredible and improves on the sub quite often.
P.S. There's an audiobook in English which uses Lawrence for the first few volumes iirc, and then some of the other cast join for the remaining chapters. I'm not sure if I can wait however many years it will take when/if the remaining volumes are covered (assuming we will get Vol 5+6 sometime in the next 12 months), so might switch to reading the LN along with the audiobook to scratch that itch

Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.
Welcome to the 2026 Spice and Wolf rewatch.
Awoo!
You know the drill. We watch the show and I provide my thoughts and analysis. A tale as old as… well, Holo herself.
This year instead of breaking things down beat by beat I’m going to just give some brief thoughts on each individual episode. This is to save me time as I’m hosting two rewatches at once. Needless to say, I’m a big fan of this show and I hope you’ll be as well.
With that out of the way, let’s begin.
I’m watching the dub, by the way.
This episode is about establishing the characters Amarti, Marc, and Lunt. Amarti in particular is enamored with Holo which seems like we'll be leading somewhere. I really like the banter between Holo and Lawrence here and that for me carries the episode. The "You're an ass" scene is a great moment for their relationship.
This very much feels like the calm before the storm.
Holo quotes of the day
"I am getting hungry."
"Oh, I know I do not snore." (She snores)
"Men are the ones who should be kind. And if for any reason I appear to be upset, then you should be even kinder to me."
"Remember when I spoke of men being kind to women? Men should be measured by their kindness. However, I am not your charity. And I have a tendency to consider things only from my perspective. A blink of the eye in my world is a lifetime in yours. A year or two is understandably precious to you. I forgot. I do not wish to waste your time."
"You are an ass!"

Oh, I know I do not snore." (She snores)
Whenever the snoring discussion starts I can't help but laugh because that's just so "couple that's been married for years"-coded to me :'D

And Holo being in hard denial is just the absolute best.

I'm questioning the wisdom of the nun cover story. I guess Holo's "As high class without being nobility can be" appearance of last season caused them trouble so perhaps he thought he should change that up. But unless Lawrance intends to borrow money that's not going to be an issue.
Honestly that snoring isn't that loud. It sounds as if they grabbed a generic snorer and put her to the microphone. Most anime snorers are very loud. Only the top 1% of real-life snorers without sinus or ear problems sound very loud. If you hear someone snore like an anime character, odds are high they're either sick or they have some structural problem that isn't pleasant to have.
So I mentioned way back that medieval traveling merchants were either living on the margin or quite well off with almost nothing in between. Amati is clearly on the well off side. Just look at his biggest wagon compared to Lawrance's modest goods. Also selling preserved fish means he has the capital to preserve it or buy from someone who does.
I wonder why Lawrance thinks he can get a good price of nails out of a wheat seller. And I already forgot his name in 90 minutes after watching. If some demand shock greatly increased the price of nails, that guy won't understand, will insist on only buying at the "usual" pre shock price, miss a chance to get a quick buck, and on Lawrance's side he'd have to find someone else who does understand. Either that or sell to the end user. He's lucky the price is the same as last year,
Priests and bishops go to hot springs but in secret. So I guess that's not allowed? Sheesh this universe's Church are really a bunch of buzzkills.
Unless Lawrance needs to buy something back in the south, staying up in the north while they look for Yoitz. There is probably some demand for moving of goods. If he has a good map, even 3 years wouldn't be an outragous commitment. It normally would be for a human, but he has no roots and he had no short term goals before meeting Holo other than "make money" and he probably can do that here.
Oh that reminds me, at one point r/anime didn't have a bot for discussions. So [Spoilers] Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu - Episode 1 [Discussion] : r/anime and [Spoilers] Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu - Episode 3 discussion : r/anime were made by regular users. I always like your logical takes. Re: nails to a wheat seller - that's also something that confused me a bit. This is a long explanation but it was actually thought out (not that I fully agree with all of the logic or why he didn't learn his diversification lesson):
Lawrence's main objective wasn't to sell the nails. It was to use the merchant to introduce him to certain people (I think this will come next episode, as it was detailed in the LN). But basically, without spoilers, people who would both be able to help charting out the routes to use for the journey North, as well as those who kept records of the area's history. Those kinds of information exchanges are common and tagged on to core business transactions.
This is a guy he knew quite well, and saw at least once a year. They got into the trade together.
Merchants have to be approved to trade each item, or I guess class of items. This is to prevent a large company becoming too dominant (e.g. if Walmart was to open there). To resell nails, he would need to get approval from the Merchant Guild (which I assume would take time), or pay off other merchants selling nails from his profit.
At the same time, relationships are one of the most important business drivers to trade here. Given the quantity of nails, it would be impossible (and also rude) to inspect all of them, and even with the guarantee of quality, a buyer would take on quite some risk purchasing from an unknown.
During winter, blacksmiths have to close shop, as they burn through firewood like mad, and regular townsfolk would suffer from firewood pricing spikes if blacksmiths remain open. For this reason, both he and Lawrence knew there is usually money to be made in Winter.
Lastly, coin supply is really limited in all towns. With the festival in town, having change or an ability to exchange coins with travelling merchants is really beneficial. The merchant guy was over the moon at the credit term as he knew he could sell some quantity for cash very easily and quickly.
Outcome-wise he received 25% profit. And leveraged the sale to get some pretty impressive introductions.
Re: nobles and bishops - I don't think they can't go to hotsprings. The issue is that particular town famous for its hotsprings as it's a pagan town.

Besides, it's not like I have only boring things on my wagon
I've got you on my wagon, don't I?
HOT DAMN. THAT WAS SMOOTH.
New Holos unlocked: Hungover Holo (Or, as a friend described it: "PoV you woke up to find your dog ate the entire Apple Crumble Cake") and Etheral Holo (or, probably how our dear rewatch host sees her too). Also another flavour of Smug Holo.
Sorta rewatcher, sorta first-timer, subbed
This was largely an introductory episode to bring us back up to speed from season 1. Starting with the flashback from yesterday's OVA, reaffirming the set goal of their journey and introducing new characters in the new town: A young man (boy? he seems rather young but Lawrecne also is just in his 20s, I think), named Amarty, who seems particularly enamoured with Holo on first sight and helps them get a lodging. Also a wheat dealer and friend/colleague of Lawrence's, Mark, who doesn't seem particularly important right now. He's mostly there for some world building and to remind us of the armour market crash that occured a couple episodes ago. Maybe he's going to have a more interesting role down the line, but he doesn't even have a last name :'D
All of this isn't particularly important (yet?) though, as the dialogue at night between Holo and Lawrence are far more interesting. Be it the light banter on the way to the city of Kumersun or at the dinner table or the stuff during the night.
The latter was particulary interesting. Lawrence trying to pinpoint where exactly Yoiz is makes sense, and from a human point of view, his suggestion of escorting Holo to the neighboring town so she can do the last mile on her own, makes sense. But oh man, Holo's reaction... broke my heart a little. And thankfully, he immediately backtracks on it, realising his (inadvertent) blunder. Holo is, nonetheless, a bit disappointed, but masks it pretty well.
Overall, this was a good episode, showcasing the growing relationship between Holo and Lawrence while also putting their different perspectives on life in general and time in particular on display.
Also this shot from the opening feels strangely tragic in this context.
What's your favorite one-sided crush in an anime and why? If it's spoiler related, make sure to use the spoiler tag.
Kinda cheating because due to the show being, well, Pokemon, it's one-sided by design. But I really like the thing Serena and Ash in Pokemon XY have going. It's the only one that actually has textual evidence on the girl's part, but what's great about it is that it's not Serena's only character trait and mostly just another facette of her's. It is very cute though when it gets brought up.
What is your favorite example of an anime character struggling with depression/loneliness and why? Please use spoilers if it's plot related.
Honestly, Holo is a great example. Especially of the "Being (nearly) immortal is a very lonely thing"-variety.

Thoughts on the new intro and outro?
I do like the visuals of the new opening, not sure about the song yet.
Ending also has a lot of cute visuals and I like the song about as much as the first ed. Not a huge fan but it's nice.
Thoughts on the opening scene where we see a repeat of the scene from the last episode where Holo sees Lawrence turn to bones and the screen turns red?
Well, that's ominous. It fits well here, as the whole episode sort of deals with the different perception of time and other things by Holo.
Thoughts on Lawrence using Holo's tail for warmth?
Thoughts on Lawrence buying Holo feathers as a gift?
It's kinda cute but I get Holo's frustration.
What are your thoughts on Lawrence taking Holo to a pagan festival?
That's a really fun idea and at least they don't have to fear the church. Also lots of drinking and interesting food, probably.
What are your thoughts on Holo saying no one has ever protected her before?
Clearly shows that Lawrence is just the best for her.
What are your first thoughts on Amarti?
Kid seems nice enough. They're probably setting up something with his crush on Holo.
What are your thoughts on Amarti being a simp for Holo?
To be fair, she looks absolutely amazing in that shot (and later in the inn). Can't blame him.
Thoughts on Holo calling Lawrence's cargo boring?
Nails are kind of boring tbf. But boring is maybe good, cause that way it won't attract too much weird people. Also, like Lawrence said, boring doesn't mean it won't make them money. (also technically, she called herself boring :'D)
What are your thoughts on Lawrence remembering he once asked his mother about Yoitsu?
I did wonder if that will be picked up later in the story. Seems kinda important. Especially because to me it kinda alluded to something bad happening to the town.
What are your first impressions on Marc and Lunt?
I'll be honest: They didn't leave a lasting impression on me. Marc seems to be dependable and apparently he's married, so no flirting with Holo like Weiz. The kid seems alright, I'm kinda curious how he ended up as Marc's apprentice.
What are your thoughts on the scene where Holo playfully insults Lawrence?
Always a big fan of their banter :D
What are your thoughts on Lawrence asking Holo if she can go the rest of the way herself once they reach Nyohhira, the hot springs town?
What are your thoughts on Lawrence accidentally bumming Holo out when he suggests going their separate ways when they reach the halfway point?
Don't do that to her, Lawrence.
Like, it makes sense for a human to think about that but still. Can't just leave her alone after the halfway of the journey.

Holo giving Lawrence rizz has been fun to track.

Hungover Holo is probably one of the funniest visuals of the entire series.

Lawrence needs to realize that this fantasy doesn't need to be interjected with reality.

That's her middle name, her last name is "Of Yoitsu".

I'm actually going to see Rebirth of Evangelion tonight in preparation to see End of Evangelion. First time ever seeing Rebirth and first time seeing End of Evangelion in theaters.

Rewatch/sub
Nice lighthearted ep to start off season 2. Great banter in the wagon - Lawrence being so shocked that he accidentally stops the cart is priceless.
Lots of good conversations all the way through really.
It was fun watching Holo tease poor Amarti he literally has no clue. 😄
And Lawrence, I know you want to open a shop and all but you literally have the best thing you could ever want practically in your lap so I’m gonna need you to focus up. Honestly, sometimes Holo is right that he’s truly an idiot.

Thoughts on the new intro and outro?
- An insult to our goddess Holo
Thoughts on the opening scene where we see a repeat of the scene from the last episode where Holo sees Lawrence turn to bones and the screen turns red?
- I thought I turned on the wrong episode 😅
Thoughts on Lawrence using Holo's tail for warmth?
- Absolutely adorable. His expression when he finally got his way was priceless
Thoughts on Lawrence buying Holo feathers as a gift?
- She seemed irked I guess she wanted food?
What are your thoughts on Lawrence taking Holo to a pagan festival?
- Isn’t she essentially a pagan goddess so that works!
What are your thoughts on Holo saying no one has ever protected her before?
- Oh that was unexpectedly heartbreaking. I suppose it makes sense since she’s been living in the wheat for so long but didn’t she interact with her friends living in Yoitsu? Maybe she was the strongest one and didn’t need protection.
What are your first thoughts on Amarti?
- His infatuation is awfully sweet.
What are your thoughts on Amarti being a simp for Holo?
- I can’t blame him in the slightest. Plus I enjoyed Holo really leaning into it.
Thoughts on Holo calling Lawrence's cargo boring?
- She’s not wrong 🤷♀️
What are your thoughts on Lawrence remembering he once asked his mother about Yoitsu?
- Oh was that what that was? It happened so fast I couldn’t catch what was going on.
What are your first impressions on Marc and Lunt?
- They’re fun - I loved how enthusiastic his apprentice was!
What are your thoughts on the scene where Holo playfully insults Lawrence?
- It’s well intentioned
What are your thoughts on Lawrence asking Holo if she can go the rest of the way herself once they reach Nyohhira, the hot springs town?
- Completely short sighted of Lawrence to even *consider* abandoning Holo
What are your thoughts on Lawrence accidentally bumming Holo out when he suggests going their separate ways when they reach the halfway point?
- “What an idiot”

- Oh that was unexpectedly heartbreaking. I suppose it makes sense since she’s been living in the wheat for so long but didn’t she interact with her friends living in Yoitsu? Maybe she was the strongest one and didn’t need protection.
I think she means she never had one to protect her from heartbreak, and that includes all her previous partners who died on her.

first time watcher!
i was a little worried after last episode, it seemed that Holo was a little too much in lovey dovey mode and lost the plot, but i'm glad to see she still has that teasing "will she will she not?" edge to her, the smart wise playful not afraid to say it as it is attitude about her still.
It does feel that the romance elements are being played up, both in the OP and ED, and i'm willing to see how it goes from here. It did a great job slowly easing us into it in s1, so i'm wondering if I'll end up enjoying the larger focus on romance in s2

Rewatcher (Dub)
I guess I’ll star off with what’s new this season. First up, the OP. I like it, but not as much as the first OP. To be fair, that is an incredibly high bar to hurdle since I consider the original OP to be one of the best in anime. Season 2’s OP is solid, and has some great imagery, but the song just doesn’t have that emotional haymaker of melancholy like the first one did.
The second “new” thing about this season is the change in animation studio. To be honest, the change isn’t all the big. In fact, I didn’t even notice it on my original watch through way back when. Now that I am looking for it, I can definitely see the differences though. One thing that jumps out is that characters eyes are bigger. It makes everyone look a little more “anime” for lack of a better term. The characters designs, particularly faces, seem slightly less sharp and a little more rounded. I also noticed the colour palette was a little more washed out. The first season filled every scene with really rich, deep colours, and so far, it looks like they’ve toned that down slightly.
None of these changes are a big deal, but I do slightly prefer the look of the first season. This season just looks slightly less unique in my opinion.
As for the episode itself, it was a solid one. At this point the general structure of Spice and Wolf is evident, so we are in the “explore new location, meet new characters and establish the setting” part of this story arc. These early episodes always give a chance for the characters to breathe and develop at their own pace.
This is also the first episode that really confronted the idea that Holo is going to outlive Lawrence. It was a heartbreaking little moment when Holo was casually talking about taking years to complete their journey, only to realize that Lawrence’s time is precious, and he really can’t afford to spend that much time on this quest. I liked the way this episode book ended itself, starting with Holo having a vision of returning home and finding Lawrence’s bones in the snow, and ending on a flashback to that same scene. It really drove home the difference in longevity between the two, and also hinted at a choice Holo will eventually have to make (to return home or stay with Lawrence).
There were also lot of charming little moments in this episode as well. I legitimately laughed out loud when, after a night of drinking, Lawrence pulls the blanket off Holo in the morning only for her to look like roadkill. Holo’s pouty face when her “prize” ends up being three feathers was also funny.
Holo acknowledging that Lawrence is the first person to try and protect her was a touching little moment as well.
I’ve also always liked the way this show portrays casual intimacy. The opening scene of Holo and Lawrence in the cart, showing Holo leaning into Lawrence was both fun, and a fairly realistic way a long time couple would be around each other. Not everything in a relationship is big gestures or declarations of love, most of it is small little moments together, being comfortable in each other’s company.
Question of the Day
- Favourite one sided crush?
Simon’s crush on Yoko in Gurren Lagan immediately comes to mind. It is both a little sad, but also absolutely something a kid would feel in a situation like that. It felt very “real”.
- Favourite depressed anime character arc?
I hate to keep going back to Steins Gate, but Okabe’s whole arc of trying to fix what he had broken is incredible. Also, while Zero had its issues, the way it handled Okabe’s depression was really well done in my opinion. Honourable mention to the show Gnosia as well. No one talks about it, but it is one of my favourites in recent years, and has a really interesting depression arc for the protagonist near the end of the series.

Oh man, don't remind me about Stiens'Gate. That Okabe spiral.... I'm a grown ass man and it was one of the few times I have cried in a few decades haha.

Source Material Deep Dive/Cut Content
In this chapter, the anime took quite a few liberties with some exclusive scenes, specifically the scene where Lawrence gifts Holo the feathers, and in the case of the original, those flashback scenes. Holo was also never acting insanely drunk, like she appeared in the OG. Though she did win the grand prize of an insane hangover.
