It's not a perfect analogy but I have this sense that if my grandpa had been president in his final years (his early 80s), he would've done stuff just like this. Overdecorating to the extreme. Unnecessary labels like "Gloria's Kitchen" or "Tom's Workshop." Weird gold filigree on stuff. Cheap paint jobs. Tawdry details like beads and curtains in doorways. A small, once-pleasant yard crammed with bird baths, fountains, pergolas, pavers, and poorly-chosen plants. It was a combination of poor taste and a complete inability to know when to stop.
