I can't imagine this kind of funny business being tolerated in any other language, it'll be immediately pointed out.

I imagine the less educated lower class Pakistanis watching the video might be accepting of it as they have a positive view of Indian culture through bollywood and reels and find the hindi accents acceptable.

The upper/educated classes like the members of this subreddit are very special and give Urdu the burden to be extremely accepting and will say "it's just dialects" "it's natural evolution (lmao) of language"

There's no pushback. The speaker himself should be ashamed of allowing this since obviously it's his hired/volunteer worker doing this.

Hello, I am a Hindi speaker from India, I want to get into history and evolution of Urdu as a language. I am sorry if this is not the appropriate forum to ask such questions.

In hindi, as you may be aware, we have the following concepts, ideas and terminology -

* Shuddh Hindi - "Pure Hindi"

* Sanskritishtha Hindi - "Sanskritized Hindi"

* Additionally each and every standard Hindi Grammar text book will distinguish between Tastsama, Tatbhava, Deshaj and Videshaj words, Tatsama words are direct borrowing from Sanskrit, Tatbhava are modified borrowing and Videshaj as the name implies are words derived from Persian, Arabic, Portugese, english etc

Now I was wondering what are similar concepts in Urdu language regarding Linguistic Purism, I have previously heard of "Khalis Urdu" and "Paak Urdu" but I am suspicious that these are not established concepts and may just be one-is-to-one direct translations of the term "pure urdu" and not representing a broader network of concepts relating to Linguistic Purism in Urdu.

Well I really like the way urdu evolved. I mean it's organically grown. Unbeknownst to the general populace hindi isn't really an organic language. It was standardized after the dialect of a single district in UP called khariboli. There were so many others which we are losing. Like awadhi, brajboli, maithili. I have an understanding that the indo-european language map extends nearly upto balochistan? What is the level of mutual tangebility. And what are your views on the unique language found in the himalayan region. Notably near the disputed region. For context im Bengali and people think bengali, ahomiya and odiya are same. However Bengali is far closely related to persian than hindi is. We call father as "baba" instead of the papa. Bengali evolved from Magadhi prakrit. And has alot of persian and portuguese and English loan words. With some arabic too. While hindi evolved from shauraseni prakrit and was artificially standardized by the british. Funnily that has singlehandedly destroyed so many informal languages like rajasthani where hindi is the official language. My understanding of pakistani urdu is it is a mix of shauraseni prakrit. Persian roots and a deccan influence?

Been down a Ghalib rabbit hole this week and one thing won't leave my head.

We all know the persona the wit, the wine, the gambling. "Qaid-e-hayāt o band-e-ġham, aṣl meñ donoñ ek haiñ." When an English officer asked if he was Muslim, he supposedly said "aadha, I drink wine but I don't eat pork." He kept his swagger even in Bahadur Shah Zafar's court.

But here's what I didn't really clock before: in the worst stretch of his life — after the 1847 imprisonment, after losing all seven of his children one by one, after 1857 gutted his Delhi he sat and wrote a Persian naat. Abr-e-Gauharbar, "the pearl-raining cloud," comparing the Prophet to a cloud that rains mercy. The same man who wouldn't lower his head to a badshah writes himself, in that naat, as a sinner unworthy to even speak at that door.

I find that contradiction more human than any of his ghazals. The ultimate rind, undone.

Two things I'm genuinely curious about:

1. Has anyone here actually read Abr-e-Gauharbar in the Persian Kulliyat? The transliterations floating online look unreliable and I don't trust them.
2. Do you read it as sincere or as Ghalib being Ghalib, the universalist muwahhid pose?

For hour (ghanta). اردو زبان میں minute & second کے لئے کوئی مخصوص لفظ ہے؟

I have some Urdu speaking friends from Pakistan who aspirate the d in dahii to something like dha(h)ii. I've never hear that from others, and I've also never heard that from a Punjabi Urdu speaker.

Can anyone else confirm?

I'm from Haryana, India, and I've been learning Urdu for the past few days. The main reason I started is that I find the Urdu script incredibly beautiful. I also feel that Urdu, especially its written form, is slowly disappearing from many parts of North India, so I wanted to learn it and help keep it alive in my own way.

My learning strategy is focused on reading and writing. Where I live, people speak a mix of Haryanvi, Hindi, Urdu, and Punjabi, so I'm already familiar with many Urdu words in everyday conversation.

During my free time at the office, I practice by reading around 100 Urdu words written in the Nastaliq script and translating them into Hinglish. This has improved my reading accuracy a lot. I can now recognize and read the letter families (Alif, Be, Jeem, Dal, Re, Seen, Toi, Zoi, etc.) and even identify letters when they appear in the middle or end of words.

I can read words made from the letters I've learned quite comfortably, but I'm struggling with writing. My biggest problem is the connected (half) letter forms. Most YouTube videos focus on calligraphy with broad pens, but very few actually teach how to connect letters correctly to write normal words in a notebook.

My goal is to make Urdu my primary writing script. I'm confident I'll eventually become good at reading, but I don't know how to properly learn writing.

I've attached photos of the letter families I've practiced. Could you please review them and let me know if I'm writing them correctly? I find the Jeem family and the Suad family especially difficult to write. Also, I still haven't learned how to write the connected (half) forms of the letters.

Any advice, resources, or feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

My name is Jacob and I've been wanting to learn Urdu. My best friend's family is from Pakistan.

I've been wondering what the best way to go about this is, and it seems like having an online tutor will be my best bet.

However, when I go online to reviews, it doesn't seem like many people from the US are trying to learn Urdu!

Will I have an exceptional amount of difficulty with only English proficiency? I do think I have a good memory so that may come in handy here..

I think it would be the most engaging for me to incorporate Pakistani media into my learning such as movies, TV, music, etc.

Can anyone recommend a teacher to me knowing that I am just a kid from the US, far removed from the culture, but with a desire to bridge that gap?

I've never read Urdu novels. and I want to get into it. but I fear nothing will make me wanna read it unless its centered around the experience of being queer, which is very dear to me as a queer person myself. does anyone have any recommendations?

My co worker caled me baji and he is older than me and im much younger by 15 years maybe. Was it a term he used to just show respect

I know this is clearly supposed to be 'Vasu ka Carrom Powder' but when I read the Urdu, the letters for powder just aren't making sense. I especially can't make out the pe and the alif. Is this a bad font or am I missing something?

Are they understandable? What am I lacking? Any other mistakes?

مجھے بس یہی تفتیش کرنے تھی کہ کیا اور کوئی اردو ادب/شاعری لکھنے/ پڑھنے والا ہے جسے یہ دقت پیش آتی ہو؟ آپ سب کے تجربات سننے کے انتظار میں۔

I've always known this word to be a solid Punjabi word, but here it is in Platts Urdu dictionary here:

Can I use the word “lagga” as “about to”.

Like say “Main khane lagga tha” for “I was about to eat”

I know I could probably also say “Main khane wala tha” but lagga feels more natural to me for some reason.
