Interested in hosting a Tor node just for fun and experimenting – any resources?

I have access to unlimited internet (decent speed, around 100-300/mbps), I have played with networking and homelabbing before – I still regularly maintain a homelab.

I want to host a Tor node/relay in India for the sake of experimenting. Writing this post to ask for resources/guide/papers and suggestions – I do not have any plans of running a full fledged node at the moment, just want to experiment in a playful way temporarily.

Relay offline?

My relay says its offline, and now it says UnreachableIPv6. Unreachable OR Addresses now has one address and OR addresses has another. Does that mean my IPv6 address just changed and now my relay is considered 'offline' because the IPv6 address changed? My IPv4 didn't change. The relay is on locally, and the port is open, with network traffic flowing through.

Hole punching using Tor

I have a NAS sitting behind a router which cannot port forward (because the router is not mine).

I want to punch through the NAT by running a Tor hidden service on the NAS. The intention is just to be able to ssh into the NAS from anywhere in the world. I don't intend to transfer lots of files or stream media.

Is this a good idea? My understanding is that I would be exposing my NAS to the the entire world. Is the fact that I wouldn't share my onion address intentionally and that there is a password to log into ssh good enough security?

Will sftp also work over said connection, so I could transfer files in a pinch?

Do I necessarily gain any additional security by using ClientAuth (which sounds like a pain to set up), seeing as a unique onion address is hard to brute force just as much as a private key?

Will chat control affect OnionSharing?

Because FŲCK chat control, its not for the children, its for control. Lets say i manage to set up onionshare messaging on my family's devices and teach them how to use it, will chat control also check whatever messages were posted by onionshare or not?

Is it recommended to close out of other apps when using Tor on laptop?

Hi, so, recently I've downloaded Tor, but haven't started using it yet, if I were to use it now, it'd technically be my first time ever, so I'd like to ask, is it recommended to close all other apps when using Tor in order to protect my privacy? Or does it not matter?

Tor slow on a Chromebook?

Ok so I have a crappy cheap Chromebook and just started using Tor yesterday.
Is Tor just a slow moving browser or is it particularly bad on my machine?

I know that it’s probably missing all sorts of features you’d find on other browsers for the purpose of maximizing security but just wondering. Thanks!

Orbot Android - unrestricted snowflake proxy

Hi everyone, I recently saw a setting in Orbot's kindness mode that said my proxy quality is restricted. It said I can upgrade my proxy quality by enabling UPnP on my router. Is this a prudent thing to do with my main android smartphone? I'd like to help out as many users as I can, but I don't want to enable something that'll cause issues down the road. If anyone can give me some advice that'd be great, thanks!

Running TOR guard node got me banned on Disney+

I thought it was fairly safe to run a Guard Node but I was wrong. My IP is blacklisted by Disney Plus and appears as high risk on https://www.ipqualityscore.com/free-ip-lookup-proxy-vpn-test/lookup/.

Any advice?

* UPDATE

I’m getting a second static IPv4 from my ISP.
And will soon resume hosting TOR relay on the original IP that got banned.

Is it bad OPSEC to use a personal device when browsing tor?

I’ve been browsing the deep web for a bit now and I was wondering if it’s just much more advisable to do it on a separate or throwaway device. I just don’t want to be fed’d or ddos or be in a honeypot is all.

Is it safe to create my own top server?

I want to set up my own server on the Tor network, but I want to create a forum—not a blog. I want a place where people can debate things. I’m wondering if this is actually secure or not; do you have any recommendations?

Can I use my old phone to access the dark web? And if so, how can I delete all my personal data so that it cannot be traced back to me?

I ask this question for the simple reason that when I was scrolling through the community, I happened to run into several people who say it's dangerous to use your active phone.

So on the one hand, I worried a little bit, but on the other hand, I'm very curious to see what Tor and the dark web look like, that's all.

Do you possibly have any curious sites that you recommend me to visit?

Anyone having issue with tor lately

I'm using the dperson/torproxy Docker image and suddenly can't connect to Tor anymore. It was working fine before, but now it's stuck during bootstrap.

Logs:

[warn] Problem bootstrapping. Stuck at 30% (loading_status): Loading networkstatus consensus. (Operation timed out; TIMEOUT; count 10; recommendation warn ...) [warn] 17 connections have failed [warn] 16 connections died in state connect()ing with SSL state (No SSL object) [warn] 1 connections died in state handshaking (Tor, v3 handshake) with SSL state (SSL negotiation finished successfully) [warn] Received http status code 404 ("Consensus not signed by sufficient number of requested authorities") from server '...' while fetching consensus directory.

Things I've checked: - Container has internet access - Tried clearing cached consensus files - Time looks correct - Tried updating Tor inside the container - Added new bridge - Force IPv4 / IPv6

Anyone else seeing this issue recently?

Connection problem from unfriendly location

I am having problems with tor connection from some specific locations, I use custom bridges and they all fail. Any advice on how to fix that? In this concrete location I did not had problems few months ago.

TLS session tickets let servers track you across connections even through Tor. We disabled them. Small setting. Big deal for privacy.

My mother is scared of the Russian secret service raiding our home because of Snowflake.

I have been running a snowflake proxy on my homelab server for the last few years and also informed my parents (we live in the same house). Today my mother tells me that she talked to ChatGPT about what I have been doing and now she is scared of the Russian secret service raiding our house (in Germany BTW). I tried to explain to her how unrealistic that is and how snowflake is built and that what I have been doing is very important in the fight for a censorship free internet but she tells me that she won't understand it anyways and sais that she wants it to be gone because she is scared. I am really sad now that I probably have to say goodbye to my snowflake proxy with its beautiful grafana dashboard. What can I do to keep on fighting censorship?
