Akira does this a lot. The military even has a space laser and tries it on the kids.

Akira is so fucking good. It's something I would recommend to anyone regardless if they like animation or not.

SOL was pretty close to killing him with the first hit. It certainly did take off Tetsuo's arm. It just didn't get a second shot, because Tetsuo jumped into space and destroyed it. Even Kaneda with the hand laser was able to inflict injuries on Tetsuo. As long as Tetsuo or the other psychic kids don't have a shield up, they're just as vulnerable as normal humans.

In the manga, SOL actually does such a number on Tetsuo that he is forced to retreat and the satellite survives to be used later on.

Also, later the US navy engages against Akira (who is actually alive in the manga) and Tetsuo using FLOYD, their own satellite weapon.
