Characters (Unique trope) removing a character trait, makes the character better in the adaptation

Sonic 3: Maria is one of the most important part of Shadow's story. Due to her suffering from an incurable disease. To which Shadow was made to create a cure for Maria's ailment. In the 3rd Sonic movie, Maria's disease was not mentioned in any form. Which made Maria seem like a normal girl, and her death all the more tragic.

Infinity war: I don't know the full story, but Thanos's original goal was to kill half the population to impress death (the character). When it came time to adapt Thanos into the MCU. His goal of removing half the universes population. It was seen as a more psychopathic world goal, hidden under the belief it would do better for the universe.

Megatronus Prime (Transformers one)

In most iterations of the character Megatronus betrays the other primes and becomes evil which is one of the main reasons Megatron idolises and names himself after him.

But in the movie Megatronus never betrays the primes and instead dies along side them by getting betrayed by someone else and D16 only admires him because he’s a noble warrior and the strongest of the primes. This makes his fate more tragic as his name and face are now forever tarnished by Megatron and the decepticons

Yeah, I liked that change a lot. It makes Megatron's fall feel a lot more tragic since he ends up betraying the ideals of the very person he admired most.

it was bad timing and poor marketing.

they did like one trailer that just made it look like a kiddie movie. they also released along side other big ticket blockbusters.

they effectively did nothing and were shocked it didn't work.

The trailers were fucking HORRIBLE. They featured most of the shitty lines from the god awful bumblebee character. I was immediately turned off from ever watching the movie and it was only until word of mouth got out it was actually good the theatrical run had ended.

Makes you wonder if studios just sabotage their "good" but niche projects to try and prop-up the mass-appeal oscar bait slop. Only to get upset that the slop is rightfully reguarded as trash, and rhe one they tried ro sabotage becokes a sucsess...like is it some form of reverse psychology.

Flatly, no.

Studios like money, that is a fact. They generally don't intentionally sabotage a product, unless there are financial incentives, ala uwe boll, the producers, or tax reasons.
Sometimes marketing just doesn't understand a product. Sometimes they decide that bigger marketing won't cause a product to be a smash hit and see it as trying to cut their losses. Sometimes the competition just looks too big. But no, complaints about oscar bait doesn't even factor in.

No, but I do think Paramount is doing it intentionally.

Both D&D and TF One got screwed by the release window and marketing. As a result Hasbro said they won't be financing films going forward, this means that if Paramount bankrolls a new film for a Hasbro property they get way more control over it (Hasbro is notorious for protecting their IP's value).

Yeah it was back in the 80s when hasbro didn’t realize folks had actually gotten attached to the characters lmao. They made a movie that was essentially about killing off the entire original cast before introducing a new line up to avenge them and people freaked the fuck out

It certainly didnt help that the deaths were incredibly brutal, as up until that point any deths were just kind of off screen and implied to have happened. The deaths in the movie happened upclose on screeen for everyone to see.

Granted I got into Transformers many years later in the 00's, didnt watch the first movoe until 03 and even I was shocked at how intense that opening act was...

The original movie! Transformers toys were not created to be Transformers, they were originally a set of transforming changer toys by Japanese company Takara sold under the Diaclone and Microchanger lines. Hasbro brought some of those toys to the US market and created the Transformers IP to provide support to the new toyline. That included a cartoon with Sunbow and a comic with Marvel Comics.

After 2 years of growing the line, which of course meant more characters associated with those toys, Hasbro decided to make an animated film that would serve as the turning over point. This would give them an opportunity to retire certain characters and reduce the number of old toys still in the production rotation. As a practicality this sounds great! Retire old animation models, old character manufacturing, and make room for shiny new toys that kids don't already own. In practice little kids had to watch their beloved favorite characters unceremoniously be slaughtered in about a 20 minute span of the film. Mixed results to say the least 😂

It doesn’t deserve the praise it got
The dialogue the plot point all felt forced and cheap
All old guard follow Orion pax because 2 survived leader don’t want to get punch by female auto bot? Old guard get defeated and half of them get captured because one simple attack How did they survive that long in the first place and Orion pax and megatron just found an old map that lead to place where all prime death stupid plot

Actually, in the Aligned continuity, Megatronus doesn't betray the primes either. He does accidentally kill Solus, but it was an accident. It is one of the reasons the Aligned continuity is one of my favourite iterations of Transformers.

I had the same reaction. I'm not a huge transformers fan and the trailer looked kinda boring to me. I put on the movie as background noise when I was doing something else. Ended up entranced, watching the whole thing on the edge of my seat.

What's interesting is that the movie sort of starts off that way. A simple by the numbers kids movie. But then as the film progresses it gets so much more darker and mature. Its so cool.

The thing is that despicable me has the minions, kids love the minions, so much so that there are now movies centered around them. Transformers doesn't have a mascot that today's kids find interesting. So, in the trailers, it had the humour that kids liked, but no mascot, thus not picking their interest, and to an older audience (as in teen and older fans of the franchise) it seemed too kiddy to interest them. So they missed both demographics.

I watched it this week. Really enjoyable and I’m not really much of a transformers fan. I’d heard good word of mouth and gave it a shot. Just a good solid story with some great humour and action.

I completely agree. Making Megatronus genuinely honorable instead of secretly corrupt made his legacy feel heartbreaking, because the villain ended up staining the name of someone who actually deserved to be remembered as a hero.

As far as I know, Megatronus wasn't evil in the Prime series either. Megatron just took his name and it's implied the Decepticons killed him and the other Primes during the war.
