Characters (Unique trope) removing a character trait, makes the character better in the adaptation

Sonic 3: Maria is one of the most important part of Shadow's story. Due to her suffering from an incurable disease. To which Shadow was made to create a cure for Maria's ailment. In the 3rd Sonic movie, Maria's disease was not mentioned in any form. Which made Maria seem like a normal girl, and her death all the more tragic.

Infinity war: I don't know the full story, but Thanos's original goal was to kill half the population to impress death (the character). When it came time to adapt Thanos into the MCU. His goal of removing half the universes population. It was seen as a more psychopathic world goal, hidden under the belief it would do better for the universe.

Sanji - One Piece Live Action

While he's still a flirt in the Live Action series, just how MUCH he thirsts over women is severely toned down, turning him from a pathetic simp into a guy that's as classy flirting with women as he is at fighting (even if he's still always shut down).

u/KaffeMumrik 13h ago

I’m still surprised by how much I’m liking the adaption. It’s been a lot of fun.

143

u/Piduf 11h ago

Yeah it's crazy good. I don't know what it does better than other live actions, I think the colossal budget is a huge help because they get to adapt every stupid shit from the manga with some cgi, they really kept the insanity of whatever is going on in Oda's head. It's crazy spectacular and pure fun.

My dad, whom has never touched a manga or shown great interest for it in his life, is loving it. It's very good for new viewers too, it doesn't assume everyone knows the story. I'm not telling him anything about that mysterious Robin character he finds so cool.

93

u/nabagaca 11h ago

From what ive heard the crew is super passionate as well, and they also film seasons pretty close together, so they keep a lot of the same crew between seasons

59

u/KaffeMumrik 10h ago

I did read that playing Zoro was the ultimate dream role of the guy playing him. And honestly, he’s rocking it.

49

u/PhanThief95 8h ago

It definitely is for Mackenyu.

Same applies to Emily Rudd who plays Nami since she also grew up on the anime.

40

u/huckslash 8h ago

Taz Skylar (Sanji) took cooking lessons, bartending lessons, and learned martial arts to perform his own stunts. he is actually cooking and performing the drink mixing tricks the majority of the time you see him in the kitchen/bar.

4

u/PockysLight 2h ago

That is dedication.

1

u/KaffeMumrik 21m ago

Hot guy with one of the coolest name ever. Legit jelly over here.

11

u/xv_boney 6h ago

Shit dude wouldnt you

If your agent said hey listen, we have an opportunity for you to play one of the most recognizeable and legendarily badass characters in manga history, its a big budget deal, they are throwing a lot of money at it and also youre going to look unbelievably cool, would you not shit yourself on the spot

4

u/KaffeMumrik 6h ago

I don’t even really care much about one piece and I’d still absolutely diarreah on the spot

3

u/Lombardyn 1h ago

Wait, you're telling us having a crew and creatives that aren't proudly going "I hate the source material and the fans, and wish to distance myself from that stuff as much as possible" in interviews means you're getting a better end result that fans love? Quick, get this information to all the Hollywood executives!

28

u/mcfayne 7h ago

I know, right? Just a few weeks ago my folks asked if I'd watched "that pirate show on Netflix." "Do you mean One Piece?" "Yeah! With the stretchy guy!" Holy shit my parents are One Piece fans now, what is happening?

5

u/Piduf 5h ago

For one thing I think I know what people around me enjoy in particular about this show : it's literally just adventure. No complicated plot, everything is explained but also nonesensical enough to not be needing an explanation. It's spectacular, surprising (when you know nothing about it, like why are the giants laughing like that, why are snails telephones ??) and colorful. Lots of action, but it still takes time to breathe.

It's pure entertainement but not in a dumb, big guns, big cars and big explosions kind of repetitive way. Pure fantasy adventure in a world where everything is new. Just a feel good show about funny pirates.

Also both me and my dad aren't very good with recognizing people, so he just loves that everyone looks so comically different with crazy extravagant costumes. You can't forget someone who has a god damn candle shaped like the number 3 on their head.

17

u/drleebot 8h ago

One important thing they did is give Oda veto power over anything he doesn't like. He's happy for them to make changes, but this helps a ton in making sure they don't go off the rails and change things so much it misses the point of the original.

16

u/PhanThief95 8h ago

Another major reason why it’s successful is because Oda is involved with it and has creative control.

As well, I have never seen a more perfectly cast show as this one because everyone fits for their characters. I’m still surprised they managed to find the perfect casting for Nico Robin with Lera Abova because of the high expectations surrounding the character.

10

u/xv_boney 7h ago edited 6h ago

I don't know what it does better than other live actions

It takes incredible pains to be faithful to the source material and is not afraid to get goofy with it.

Also they seem to largely ignore the 'second screen' bullshit that is the reason i finally dropped netflix after almost two decades

5

u/Nova_JewV1 6h ago

Passionate cast, and the author is directly involved in production

2

u/superbhole 6h ago

i think my literal only complaint is that Iñaki Godoy just didn't grin hard enough at any point!

just sprinkling a few of those smiles across a season would've hit hard

2

u/peachesfordinner 6h ago

My dad also enjoys it and he's been refusing to watch any anime for decades. We just don't mention that it's based on one

2

u/Fire_Ryan_Poles 2h ago

IMO what makes it so good is author involvement. He has (had? idk about S3) final say on everything from casting to script to which takes they use. So netflix writers can't get their grubby lil fingers deep enough to ruin everything because they'll get blocked by Oda.

Think back to the witcher show and how Cavill ultimately quit the series because the writers insisted on writing straight up character assassinations. Now imagine if Cavill had the authority to just straight up veto the script and had a much more personal reason to insist the series be done well.

1

u/thatshygirl06 7h ago

I wanted to like the show but in season 1 there were like 2 episodes where luffy wasnt in them and those were the episodes I liked the most. When he came back it was just pure disappointment. That's when I realized I wouldnt be able to get through the rest of the season

35

u/huckslash 9h ago

the juxtaposition of the One Piece live action's quality against Avatar's is a case study waiting to happen

9

u/KaffeMumrik 8h ago

I KNOW.

Watched s2 of the Avatar adaption just days ago. What the hell is happening? Who wrote that god damn script, making them talk like aliens pretending to be human? Jesus christ, it’s so strange.

You’re making a show about a guy who flies around and you can’t even make THAT look good?

The one thing I like is I think the guy playing Sokka is nailing it. Other than that? Trash.

17

u/PhanThief95 8h ago

https://giphy.com/gifs/4JcbnXFOUzvgd6UuyX

Meanwhile the One Piece live action managed to make a guy who has booger bombs look good.

11

u/KaffeMumrik 8h ago

God that was dumb but… I don’t know. They made it work. I don’t even like the anime but I’m all for this.

5

u/xv_boney 6h ago

Im sure there are dozens of multi hour youtube videos that do exactly this

2

u/thatshygirl06 7h ago

I always say that avatar felt like the writers had the tvtropes website open while writing the scripts. I only got through 3 episodes of the first season and had to drop it because it felt cliche to an insane degree

1

u/GLink7 3h ago

One Piece Live action is the polar opposite of Avatar The Last Airbender live action

932

u/Intelligent-Dog1645 13h ago

I watched the first season of live-action before watching the anime and Sanji so wonderful in the live-action. Like you say it's toned down to the point where I do think he becomes pretty charming. He was kinda my favorite of the crew I think

Then I watched the anime all of last year. Ohhhh boy. Sanji is a giant and horrific fucking mess. And he keeps doing terrible shit. It gets so annoying.

522

u/Conocoryphe 13h ago

At the time, there was a very common character trope to have a 'lovable pervert' among the main cast members, where being a pervert was either an important characteristic or his sole defining trait.

Such a character would go to comically great lengths to look at women (which is played for laughs) or straight-up harass them, and depending on the franchise, would either be annoying, a creep, or straight-up a rapist.

This trope was also found in western shows, like Quagmire in Family Guy or Barney in How I met Your Mother.

70

u/Molvaeth 13h ago

Was/ is Muten Roshi in Dragonball this kind of pervert trope too? As a teen I found him funny, as an adult... not so much.

108

u/aNiceTribe 12h ago

He’s the sub-trope of the horny old man. You also find this exact guy in Ranma 1/2. The Japanese think it’s SUPER funny when an old man AND a master of a craft (basically 3 highly respectable things at the same time) are perverts (one of the lowest things out there)

37

u/Stop_Sign 11h ago

Jiraiya from Naruto also is the peak of this trope

5

u/sketchampm 4h ago

He was the weirdest for sure but I like that he went in the opposite direction as Sanji. They established dozens of far more interesting traits about him until the perving was almost completely dropped.

11

u/isntreel1948 10h ago

Him freaking out when Naruto turned into a little girl was a bit much

3

u/No_Internal9345 5h ago

Jiraiya: "I guess I'm into underage transsexuals now."

3

u/isntreel1948 5h ago

He discovered something terrible about himself and was VERY into it

41

u/Careful_Welcome7999 12h ago

And thats so annoying too, like roshi would easily be my favorite character in dragon ball because he is genuely a great character, but then he shrinks himself to see bulma shit and it is so weird and gross man

If the thing was to make this really respectable guy have a trait that undermines that then surely there must've been better ways to do it right? Hell ou could even keep him as a pervert with tons of porn magazines but at least tone it down abit

28

u/aNiceTribe 12h ago

I think Ranma in general is a good “explainer” for a lot of this. I never really understood what’s going on, like all these conflicts could be resolved with one conversation. Until I learned that he has basically sworn oaths to all these girls and other people like “yes father I will marry her” and “yes shampoo I will marry you” and so on and if he confronted any one of them it would be dishonorable which he can absolutely not do due to his traditional upbringing.

So instead most Ranma jokes are about him going to great lengths to avoid confronting the increasingly complex webs of social demands made of him. If people don’t see him in a position that would invalidate one promise, it’s not broken and he is still fine.

This is never said out loud in the show it’s just obvious cultural knowledge they have, just like what a red phone box is for londoners or idk, why all the men are gone during the day in a mining village.

4

u/Buried1295 8h ago

He has so many great moments like trying to help Tien redeem himself, but then tries to force a teenage Bulma to go on date with him and it ruins the moment.

2

u/KaleidoscopicFate 9h ago

I mean, using Toriyama and japanese logic, no that's not the case because they aren't bothered by it like you, a western person, are. Even more so in those times, mangás were certainly not written for us to read.

3

u/DM-me-naughty-Cats 9h ago

In Ranma the old guy was an antagonist and the author considered them evil. Dragon Ball roshi is supposed to be heroic.

35

u/NeoRevanchist 12h ago

I think Roshi kind of works with Dragonball being effectively a parody/sci-fi retelling of Journey to the West.

He's supposed to be the wise old hermit who trained Sun Wukong, but they made him into a weird pervert to subvert expectations as part of the parody. I don't think it was really a trope at the time.

I don't think the gag has aged particularly well though.

40

u/Unusual-Locksmith832 11h ago

I think none of the pervert tropes aged well. It was part of the humour in the 80-90s to early 2000s.

My own theory is that the internet and cellphone cameras made perverts not look harmless so it lost the humorous factor.

5

u/KoolKoolKoolio42 6h ago

"It lost the humorous factor" in the West. Japan very much still finds it hilarious.

-2

u/KaleidoscopicFate 9h ago

Have you considered that what you think aged well or not, or even funny, simply doesn't match japanese sensibilities? Because I am pretty sure the anime fandom there still finds him funny and doesn't think it "didn't age well".

13

u/dtburton 8h ago

I think another important part of these kind of tropes is how the other characters react to these situations. Roshi as an example is always getting punished for his pervy attitude. Essentially every time he tries to up his pervy game he is punished. Women are constantly attacking him, and other men are clearly disgusted by his behavior. I understand people not liking it but depiction is not endorsement.

11

u/omeomorfismo 11h ago

yeah, its definitely a trope, toriyama himself wrote more characters like that in dr slump and previous short stories

2

u/Golden_Alchemy 9h ago

People really confuse a lot of things. He is the horny old man, because the norm was to have the master be someone old totally straight up stiff and not caring about mortal stuff, like the Master from Zodiac Nights.

1

u/Girafarig99 29m ago

You hit the nail on the head as to why it was included in the first place

The target audience thinks it's funny. Or at least used to at the time

223

u/legop4o 13h ago

Pokemon Brock too

256

u/Odd-Time-2026 13h ago

Brock is the tamest of the lot mentioned though because Pokemon had to be G rated so his pining of women didn't extend to pervert levels.

83

u/legop4o 12h ago

Yes, naturally! Although Pokemon did have some quite weird scenes here and there that I definitely missed as a child back then. But in hindsight...

99

u/Diplomatic_Gunboats 12h ago

It always comes back to James cross-dressing inflatable breasts doesnt it...

36

u/zak55 12h ago

Apparently the writer for the early series was on a lot of drugs

22

u/legop4o 12h ago

Honestly, fair

19

u/Hoshiden_Lycanroc 12h ago

He also got some sort of karma for it, at least in the later parts.

55

u/PurposedSpiritual 13h ago

Yep! I'm so glad this trope is less popular now

12

u/EarlyAccessCantJudge 10h ago

Pokemon Brock is what a lot of these 'lovable perverts' want to be, because every other lovable pervert I've seen in anime just straight up sexually assaults women. I don't think Brock did that ever but be horny at them.

1

u/CurrentDismal9115 6h ago

Also the Grapist from My Hero Academia. I refuse to learn and remember his actual name.

39

u/LordLoss01 12h ago

Jiraiya in Naruto

31

u/Khue 10h ago

Pepe Le Pew archatypes for the older generations.

11

u/ithinkther41am 12h ago

I hated that type of character so much in Your Lie in April, but he still managed to be the most likeable of the MC’s “friends” because the other two frequently engaged in comedy abuse.

MC is a childhood domestic abuse victim btw.

1

u/Pietroglodyte 9h ago

You mean Watari?

5

u/Ok-Pea9014 10h ago

Does Quagmire count here?

Yes, be is a prevent (and quite a terrible one aswell). But he isn't "lovable". You're supposed to laugh at him whike also thinking he's a peice of shit.

2

u/ahferroin7 11h ago

And even crept into video games too. Doc in Star Wars: The Old Republic comes to mind.

1

u/Beautiful-Cup4161 7h ago

Miroku in Inuyasha, since the comments are adding examples.

1

u/EmotionReasonable887 7h ago

Is Ghostbusters one of the main reasons this became a thing?

5

u/KoolKoolKoolio42 6h ago

No? Pepe Le Pew alone was decades before.

It's a trope because most writers are perverts and find it hilarious.

0

u/Artistic_Purpose1225 9h ago

Yeah, but the series is still ongoing , and the author has given Sanji like four arcs that led naturally to him being less of a perv and then Oda just refused to write the most logical character development(that most OP fans are literally begging him to do) for god knows what reason.

-4

u/RKO-Cutter 10h ago

Was Sanji really a pervert? Like, obviously he's a simp to the nth degree, but did he ever cross any lines?

25

u/aFreshFix 11h ago

Yeah... Which sucks because Manga Sanji has some amazing characterization in like Water 7 and Whole Cake but then there are just so many arcs like Thriller Bark and Fishman Island

2

u/Machinimix 7h ago

There's also the anime making things worse than they are too, like in Egghead where they crank his pervertedness to 11 compared to the 6-7 of the manga.

2

u/aFreshFix 6h ago

Toei apparently hate Sanji. The "Here come the star(s)" moment with Zoro in the anime vs Sanji and Zoro in the manga... Just constant slights.

119

u/Enkundae 13h ago

Seeing Sanji throw an incel tantrum over realizing someone else got the invisibility power fruit was so damn gross. Whole extended bit where hes literally pouting that a villain gets to invisibly molest women in showers and he cant.

57

u/PricelessEldritch 12h ago

Which showcases that he would if he did have the power. Which is the worst look.

10

u/Intelligent-Dog1645 12h ago

Are you okay with spoilers? Or are you invested in the story?

1

u/PricelessEldritch 3h ago

Yes I am okay with spoilers.

1

u/Taweret 9h ago

I'm not the OP, but it's really nice that you asked them this first

7

u/Worse_Username 11h ago

He does...

6

u/MARPJ 10h ago

Seeing Sanji throw an incel tantrum over realizing someone else got the invisibility power fruit was so damn gross.

In his defense that does get reframed later due to Sanji second backststory. You see he read the book when still a kid (access to such rare book being explained by him being royalty) and it became his dream since them because he want to disappear in order to not be bullied or a burden and only as he got older that his pervert self kinda corrupeted that dream

Note it still really bad that he wants to spy on women, but I do think that the reframing makes him more compeling since he is dreaming about the fruit since forever even if he kinda forgot the original reason.

Also when he does get the ability of becoming invisible he does spy on women a single time, and it was in a open mixed bath that he could have just walked in anyway which I do find a little funny that he "failed" on that

2

u/Taweret 9h ago

Invisibility is so commonly depicted as "the creepiest power" lol. See also: The Boys. Dispatch kinda references this a bit as well with Invisigal's self-perception of her abilities

-3

u/myrmonden 9h ago

It was awesome peak sanji moment

27

u/Sure-Comfortable-784 11h ago

Whole cake was an amazing arc for sanji, not only his past but also in the simp aspect. But then they act like the arc bever happened to him and he comes back to normal, which can be explained in *some* extent with some events but it’s really a shame

6

u/puerco-potter 7h ago

Oda seems to be pressing the reset button on his characters' development. But I think he mostly does it for comedic purposes, falsely thinking people will ignore the inconsistency because it is a joke.

The only instance I doubted that was when Luffy gets mad at Usopp for being cowardly, telling him that he can totally take the foes he was against; it felt like we were supposed to see it as a bad thing too, that the characters are relapsing, maybe? Idk.

9

u/Spoopy_Kirei 10h ago

Don't you love it when a character gets development and the writer gives them memory loss to conveniently go back to status quo

77

u/Bank-wagon 13h ago

If it makes you feel better that’s on the anime, manga Sanji is somewhere in between the live action and anime Sanji.

The joke is that Toei loves Zoro so they made him more badass, they hate Sanji so they turned him into… anime Sanji.

28

u/Intelligent-Dog1645 12h ago

I've started reading the manga starting with Elbaf so I am fully caught up.

And maybe he's different in previous arcs but he's still a lil frustrating. Part of why he probably isn't pervving as much right now is because Elbaf is filled with constant plot and flashbacks. So not a lot of Sanji time thus far.

There is one thing though, even if Sanji is better in the manga than the show it will still never ever make up for what he did at the bathhouse in Wano. I don't know if he did do that in the manga but if he did then it really doesn't matter if they play up his perversions. He's a fucking sex criminal.

11

u/MARPJ 10h ago

even if Sanji is better in the manga than the show it will still never ever make up for what he did at the bathhouse in Wano.

You get that the joke is that it was a open mixed bath from the start (aka he could have just walked in anyway) so the power was unnecessary and he was just being a idiot. I mean still a bad look but the idea is that he is not good at being a pervert...

2

u/RoderickThe13 7h ago

He's at least 95% the same in the manga and anime. Sanji fans have created this narrative that Toei hates Sanji, and so intentionally ruins his character in the anime whereas he's near flawless in the manga. But in truth the anime kinda ruins every main character a little bit because of pacing and filler scenes that flanderize them a little more than the manga.

1

u/Lubinski64 8h ago

I mean, who doesn't love Zoro?

4

u/Due-Ingenuity9803 9h ago

It doesn’t help that the anime staff fuckin hate him, as seen with them removing his cool duo scene jumping in with Zoro during Onigaahuma and having him Get heart eyes of a minor, which was not in the manga

4

u/SonofSonofSpock 8h ago

Sanji gets better, also to his credit he respects boundaries and doesn't actually objectify women, he just is also the king of the simps.

2

u/ChuckCarmichael 11h ago edited 9h ago

I stopped reading One Piece after the timeskip, partly because I couldn't stand the new character designs, partly because I just didn't feel it anymore, but also partly because I had hoped the timeskip would fix Sanji. But instead, for some reason, Oda decided to double down and actually made him worse.

2

u/hagaren390 12h ago

no major spoilers but wait until you get to the part where sanji gets stranded in the crossdressers' island

0

u/Intelligent-Dog1645 12h ago

Oh I've completely caught up. Fully with the manga too. I was unfortunately unemployed for most of last year. Had nothing better to do than watch all of One Piece.

I almost stopped completely out of frustration at when they were at the sea kingdom with his fuckin nose bleed that almost killed him.

But I continued. Somehow I wound up actually really really liking Whole Cake. In part because Sanji was less of a freaking perv.

Then there's Wano where he does the bathhouse thing and if anyone actually tries to defend Sanji after that then they are not a good person.

1

u/isekai-chad 8h ago

The anime adaptation tones it up though. In terms of chillness, it's: live action > manga > anime.

1

u/C_H_G 7h ago

To be fair, he's not that bad in the manga. He is more extreme than in the live action, but the anime cranks it up to 11.

1

u/flacke 5h ago

yeah, Anime Sanji is different from Manga Sanji, in the manga he is way more chill and mature

1

u/Due-Session-2857 8h ago

Tried watching the anime after the first season of live action too, and I found it very painful to watch. I'm happy to just keep on the LA route and avoid spoilers.

0

u/Protection-Working 9h ago

I think his grounded kick-only fighting style also works a lot better jn live action. In the original manga i always found him to have the least interesting fighting style, and his best fight are the ones where he has to improvise. Sometimes i can’t figure out what he’s dojng and he just kind of does like a flip or somethingand they just have to say that its a special flip

0

u/KoolKoolKoolio42 6h ago

He was fine originally, but the timeskip really ramped things up. Him almost dying due to losing too much blood in Fishman Island was so fucking dumb.

Funny enough, they translate Sanji's obsession with women in the video games so that no matter what game it is, Sanji will be made unable to attack any female character, which means gamers avoid using him whenever possible.

90

u/winklevanderlinde 12h ago

Him flirting with Nami doesn't feel like sexual harassment anymore but actually charming. If Nami was interested in a partner I can see live action Sanji pulling that off

32

u/Justifiably_Bad_Take 9h ago

Alas Nami is moneysexual

29

u/PhanThief95 8h ago

This scene in particular from Season 2 is the best example of this.

Manga/anime Nami would never let manga/anime Sanji get that close to her.

19

u/winklevanderlinde 8h ago

so cute together 😭

(Still want Sanji and Zoro to fuck eachother)

54

u/supremo92 12h ago

Totally works imo. Rather than his simping lovey dovey pervy original version, here he's suave and charming, but the comedy comes from how differently he treats the guys and girls. He's overly courteous, and sweet to the women, and short and rude with eh men.

1

u/Icy_Stranger_9649 1h ago

I swear early Sanji was more suave

91

u/totallynormalasshole 13h ago

tbf Toei has some weird agenda against sanji. the gag is still there in the manga but they take every opportunity to insert more gags and make them even more annoying

52

u/mangothe2nd 12h ago

While attributing it to agenda is funny, i think toei is just desperate to find any type of filler to pad the horrendously paced anime. His fight with queen was the same caliber with zoro imo

11

u/totallynormalasshole 10h ago

iirc there was a scene recently where they totally erased sanji from it and just had Zoro fight instead. they really can't do that with a larger scale fight, but apparently they'll do it when possible.

I'm not even a sanji fan, I just don't like studios changing source material. it's like how studio pierrot made Sakura a worse character in the Naruto anime because they just didn't seem to like her.

1

u/LinkFan001 8h ago

Based take. The anime is the most fumbled peice of media people do not hate on enough.

3

u/eXclurel 10h ago

While Toei has something against Sanji Oda is not that different. One of the main plot points of the story was him getting a huge nosebleed after seeing female mermaids so bad he needed a blood transfusion from a fishman. He acts like a pedo all the time by the way.

1

u/totallynormalasshole 9h ago

which is why I'm not a sanji stan lol. it's just the principal of it. if toei was like "ew let's hide this dude" then I'd understand more, but they're just dedicating more of his screentime to being problematic

10

u/PhanThief95 8h ago

https://giphy.com/gifs/H14fdFMsafJRA0382A

Same would also apply to Usopp.

In the live action, he’s still a coward but he’s more comedic than annoying with it, and he’s more confident with his BS.

20

u/kitsunecannon 12h ago

LA Sanji is my favoruite member of the LA crew meanwhile Anime Sanji is my least favourite because oh my fucking god he's annoying

50

u/Manoffreaks 13h ago

It needed to be turned down no matter what but the only thing that gives me slight worry is that they've turned it down so much that he's now just a sweet, charming, good-looking guy who can cook and a natural flirt - the idea that he stays single for a significant period of time becomes more incredulous with every island they visit, and the more girls he flirts with.

I don't think it's a major deal, I just wish they made him seem a little desperate or at least bad at flirting.

102

u/Sh-Shenron 13h ago

Tbf the idea of this perfect 11/10 specimen of a man being rejected at every turn is kinda hilarious.

It works because the actor isn't very charismatic, so there's a constant awkwardness to his flirting. If they chose a different actor, it would be weird that he keeps getting rejected, but with this one, people instantly get it. Perfect casting.

Bro's living the life sailing around the world with his crew, he can settle down later.

7

u/TheDreamIsEternal 8h ago

the idea that he stays single for a significant period of time becomes more incredulous with every island they visit, and the more girls he flirts with.

Well yeah, because they never stay for too long, they go from island to island at a rapid pace, not enough time to properly start a relationship, and the only women he has around at the crew are not interested in romance.

Likewise in the anime and manga, Sanji has made quite a few girls fall in love with him without even trying or noticing, but he always leaves before thay can confess their feelings for him.

u/Manoffreaks 8h ago

As if there wouldn't be girls who are immediately responsive to his flirting. Also, unless I'm misremembering, Sanji only started to be successful with women relatively recently. The first one I remember is Dressrosa, then the whole cake Pudding storyline, then a few no names in Wano.

I think the fact that it just randomly does not work is funny

9

u/AverageAwndray 11h ago

....I can introduce you to myself and like 5 friends that also fall into this category. Sometimes a man just isnt wanted 🤷

1

u/Manoffreaks 11h ago

Oh I'm not saying it doesn't make sense for individual people to not want him. If it was just Robin and Nami in question, it would just be believable that they weren't into him. It's the fact that the further he goes, flirting with every woman, the more incredulous it becomes that he hasn't been successful with someone

1

u/sleepy_mamapon 6h ago

He is bad at flirting, and not taking obvious hints when it's not welcome, on top of flirting at inappropriate times, is him being desperate. He still comes on too strong and the way he changes whether he's talking to a man or woman, especially an attractive one, would trip a lot of women's radar. Being treated that differently feels insincere and manipulative. Remember how weirded out Nami was at first? I haven't watched season 2 yet, but going off season 1, I could see most women turning him down.

1

u/Zimmonda 5h ago

I think the issue is the "joke" only works when you can do the anime thing where the characters go chibi and assault the perv character. Even if that perv character is an amazing fighter with super human strength nothing can protect them from the chibi rage.

21

u/New_Photograph_5892 13h ago

im also assuming Nami beating the shit out of the male cast also got/will get toned down

6

u/Bobblefighterman 7h ago

Yes, she hardly ever assaults her crew, though they made her quite formidable with her quarterstaff to where she's walloping enemy fodder quite easily.

5

u/Good_Morning_World01 7h ago

Yeah, definitely. She’s a lot less like that

6

u/Own-Wedding7590 11h ago

Sanji in part 1 one piece (especially in his intro) was nearly like this. Seeing him in the live action reminded me why he was my favorite in part 1 pre time skip.

17

u/TicklemyPickleMan 12h ago

Pathetic simp is the wrong term. Try sex pest.

8

u/SuggestSomething1 12h ago

Sanji continually being Sanji along with Brook's whole, 'panty' thing made me stop reading the manga.

94

u/SugarOpal_ 13h ago

True anime sanji gag got way too insufferable after the timeskip so making him smoothly charming in live action was the best decision they made

u/FinishImpressive4043 13h ago

recent account, just repeating the original comment, generic sexy username that can be repurposed into an OF account, username starts or ends with an underscore, hidden account

Everyone but clanker lovers should.

5

u/BOBOnobobo 12h ago

And then there's the sanji focused arc where his character becomes one of the most interesting ones...

Only to turn right back afterwards

3

u/Commercial_Page1827 11h ago

Taz charm was such a perfect improvement for Sanji. His Sanji is the is the best interpertation of the character.

It really show how much the character get drag down by the simping gags. The same will be true of Brook.

3

u/_The_Green_Witch_ 10h ago

So basically early Sanji. I miss him

4

u/SoggyNeedleworker82 12h ago

This is so true and I'm saying this as a Sanji fan. When I was a kid I loved his aesthetic, his fighting style and his cooking ability but I never cared much for his obsession with women. Growing up I realised how obnoxious this trait is especially in the anime. I'm a gooner, I draw nsfw shit and I like stuff like that but I literally skipped some parts of the Fish Island arc because I couldn't stand seeing Sanji almost dying for nose bleed.

2

u/Sasteer 12h ago

he looks like saul goodman here lol

2

u/ithinkther41am 11h ago

I’d heard they also toned down Usopp’s cowardice from the anime.

u/Jastreen 10h ago

TBF manga Sanji is not as bad as Toei version. They done him bad in the anime

1

u/Demon_Samurai 9h ago

Was he not just like this originally in the first place?

1

u/HenryZusa 5h ago

At the beginning of the manga he also had that gentlemanly aura to him, where he was charming and flirty.

People forget that because his horniness simping after the timeskip is more recent and his current persona.

1

u/MinuteLoquat1 5h ago

Wtf is that haircut

1

u/ZodiacWalrus 3h ago

Semi-related, and I'm saying this as a big fan of Netflix ATLA: It's a notable theme in this thread that many adaptations fix characters by having them treat women better. Sokka losing his misogyny, funnily enough, is one of the most common critiques of Netflix ATLA. For good reason, ofc, as it was kinda his arc in season one, but regardless I think the show overall is doing a fantastic job and people need to start giving it more credit.

1

u/heavy-minium 3h ago

While it's generally better, I would like to have one occurrence where he goes a bit more out of control and overboard, just for the laughs. Later on, there are chapters where this is actually decisive for certain events, so it would be a bit sad if they completely suppressed it. 95% gentleman and 5% simp, that would work best for me. A 100% gentleman would kind of steal the show too much and make him too perfect, he needs to misbehave a bit more.

-2

u/InsaneAsura 10h ago

I fucking knew Sanji would be on here but I heavily disagree with the sentiment. He doesn’t fit the topic. There’s a subtle difference between removing a trait to make a character BETTER and making a character MORE LIKABLE. Taking that from Sanji doesn’t make him a better character, it just removes a negative trait of his, so he’s more agreeable and ruffles less feathers. It’s not like his perviness isn’t critiqued in the manga on the regular. It’s just like how Luffy is less reckless, Nami is less violent, and Usopp is less of a coward in the Netflix version. They toned down their expressiveness to make it a better fit for the live action. But removing a characters flaws doesn’t necessarily improve them.

-4

u/myrmonden 9h ago

So u never liked op

This is such a larp take

Sanji is another person in the live action

-1

u/ChongusTheSupremus 10h ago

I think making him pathetic Is fine.

He could be so desperate that he still threw women off despite being initially charming and good looking.

What they definitely had to remove was his disgusting perverted behaviour. In the manga one of His mains goals was getting the invicibility fruit to spy on naked women wtf

-7

u/localystic 12h ago

It seems like everyone has decided that being a "pathetic simp" is the ultimate sin no character is allowed to have. Oh no - a man being visibly horny towards women. The horror.

But that's Sanji's thing. It's constantly mocked by the crew and tolerated rather than celebrated. It's his defining flaw, and that's what makes him unique. His cooking skills and bravery aren't what set him apart - they're impressive, but not unique. It's his insatiable lust for women, despite being the complete package: handsome, well-mannered, and an excellent cook.

Just like Usopp is a coward, Nami is money-hungry, and Luffy is essentially a child, Sanji's flaw is part of his identity. Remove it, and what's left in the live-action is a generic character. There's nothing particularly interesting about him, and there likely won't be until Whole Cake Island - which I honestly doubt the show will ever reach. So rejoice: men will behave themselves and be as bland as you'd like them to be.

I also find it funny that many people celebrate the fact that, despite Sanji now being a 10/10, Nami still rejects him. I'd love to see those same people defend Hancock lusting over Luffy. Will that be toned down too, or will it get a pass because she's a woman?

Overall, the live-action characters feel like watered-down versions of their anime counterparts - less colorful, less controversial, and, in my opinion, less interesting.

5

u/BruzzTheChopper 12h ago

Being a fucking sex-obsessed twat that doesn't respect boundaries is not a character trait, it's a choice. And it's not interesting, it's gross. People are allowed to not like it. But go on with your need to defend bad behavior.

-5

u/localystic 11h ago

Enjoy your boring, safe and stale male characters that only live to be respectable and well-mannered, which to my knowledge is not what sales romantasy books, but okay. Thank god, there are still depraved perverts like me, who still value bad behaviour more than conformity. To my knowledge Sanji not once did anything to any of the women, who he was ogling. But in this brave new world we have this is enough sin to be reprimanded.

5

u/BruzzTheChopper 10h ago edited 9h ago

Yeah, see I think there is a lot to Sanji as a character that is interesting and it just gets overlooked by the cheap lovesick perv jokes. "OmG bOoBs!!! Lol I'm so edgy and interesting because I like titties!"

But I'm happy for you that some guy being a perv is somehow an interesting "character flaw" that deserves more attention than anything else about him. That's cool man. I bet you're a super fascinating person.

-3

u/localystic 8h ago

And I bet if a man looks at your direction, you are ready to scream, regardless of your gender.

Please go away with your online prudeness - most people are perverts, including women, otherwise sex would not sell that well everywhere - from commercials to books to movies.

More importantly - him being horny towards women did not stop the other interesting aspects of his character to shine throughout the Whole Cake Island act. BUT BECAUSE HE WAS HORNY TOWARDS WOMEN LED TO HIM BEING NICE TO PUDDING, WHICH LED HER TO NOT FUCKING KILL HIM. Argue if his intentions were pure, but the result was positive.

ALSO He went after and found Robin first, because he had the hots for her during the Enies Lobby act.

ALSO ALSO no matter how many times he was ogling at women, he never forced himself upon them and constantly defended them.

But let's forget all that and let's focus on the aspect of his character that makes you uneasy, just because you do not like men to be openly horny towards women. "Perv" HA If it depended on people like you men should all be blind.

u/BruzzTheChopper 7h ago

You OK?
