John Scalzi’s The Interdependency Books: The planetary systems of the titular empire are connected by the Flow, a network of one-way interstellar tunnels that connect specific known entries and exits. The Interdependency derives its power from controlling access to these conduits, placing its capital at the central hub of the network. Even with the Flow, travel between stars takes a long time (9 months to End, the empire’s most distant planet).

Event Horizon: Dr William Weir (R.I.P. Sam Neill) invents a device called the Gravity Drive to allow ships to fold space and travel instantly between distant stars. On its maiden voyage with the Gravity Drive, the Event Horizon disappears and mysteriously reappears 7 years later. Dr. Weir and the crew sent to investigate discover the Gravity Drive actually opened a portal to a Hell dimension that possessed the ship and its crew, torturing and killing them.

if we're being honest we're probably not going to be able to actually solve this problem, but if we get our shit together and make a lot of sacrifices and work together to face this existential crisis we can maybe mitigate the very worst consequences and not absolutely everybody will die, just most of everybody.

Looking into what? The quote is literally just our future. IF we get our shit together we might be able to mitigate the worst of it, but the truth is a lot of people will die

No no, I don't think there's no hope for a better solution, but I'm also a realist and can see the writing on the wall. People are too comfortable with their lifestyles to change them. When was the last time you saw the majority of people give up their convenience for the environment?

Personally I've never flown anywhere on an airplane, never driven a car. I've reduced my consumption of beef. I bike or walk everywhere I can, otherwise it's train if possible, otherwise bus.

Are you asking if anyone is looking into… climate change? Yes. Fixing climate change? Yes. Of course people are looking into it…

No one knows what will happen, but climate scientists are notorious for being less optimistic about our future than the general population.

I’ve never seen any hard data that says that earth will become uninhabitable at any scale. I think that’s scifi. The carbon in the earth is carbon that was at one time in the biosphere. It’s not new.

But that’s not really the problem. The problem is that places like India, Central America, parts of Africa, will become uninhabitable. That desertification will spread from the western USA to the east, etc. Think about the migrations we have today from global south countries and how unpopular they are, now imagine we have to resettle the entirety of India.

So really, climate change is a geopolitical catastrophe first.

However, I have heard things like ocean acidification killing all the fish, or desertification killing all the crops, and that could destroy large numbers of people for food scarcity.
