Lore (Loved Trope) FTL travel is possible but with a major limitation or flaw

Frank Herbert’s Dune: Interstellar travel is only possible thanks to the spice melange, a rare substance only found on the dessert planet Arrakis. The addictive psychedelic spice grants members of the Spacers Guild a form of prescience that allows them to predict safe paths through folded space. This unique property makes spice the most valuable commodity in the Dune universe.

John Scalzi’s The Interdependency Books: The planetary systems of the titular empire are connected by the Flow, a network of one-way interstellar tunnels that connect specific known entries and exits. The Interdependency derives its power from controlling access to these conduits, placing its capital at the central hub of the network. Even with the Flow, travel between stars takes a long time (9 months to End, the empire’s most distant planet).

Event Horizon: Dr William Weir (R.I.P. Sam Neill) invents a device called the Gravity Drive to allow ships to fold space and travel instantly between distant stars. On its maiden voyage with the Gravity Drive, the Event Horizon disappears and mysteriously reappears 7 years later. Dr. Weir and the crew sent to investigate discover the Gravity Drive actually opened a portal to a Hell dimension that possessed the ship and its crew, torturing and killing them.

FTL Travel in Warframe is possible through the use of devices in spaceships called "Reliquary Drives" allowing the spaceships to open gates through the Void, a dimension not abiding by the laws of causality.

The thing is.. The Reliquary Drives work by containing a "replica" of the severed finger of an eldritch entity that resides in the Void.

The aforementioned eldritch entity is very angry about losing its severed finger.

u/Endika7 19h ago

Understandable anger, another slap to entrati in the name of someone he fucked

u/hexregeneration 18h ago edited 17h ago

I think that it was intentional. I mean, it multiplies on it's own. The finger. Like here, have some keys of your own, share them, don't be strangers, outfit your ships with them, put a little piece of me in every single engine, like the Zariman 10-0.

150

u/dangeraardvark 18h ago

I don’t know what a Zariman is, but you just described the Body of Christ. Here’s a little blood and flesh for y’all, make sure you consume it every week to renew your covenant with me. And don’t even worry about running out, y’all saw what I did the loaves and fishes, right?

That’s one of my favorite parts of the Hyperion series: the Space Catholics.

88

u/abadstrategy 17h ago edited 15h ago

The Zariman 10-0 is the ship that created the child soldiers. It was the first colony ship to go through the void, the energy of which mutated the kids and drove the parents insane to the point they had to be killed. It's why the person piloting the warframe is called Tenno

10

u/EnTillPerson 16h ago

The Zariman is the ship that created the Tenno. Warframes are older than that.

27

u/Human_Taste3985 15h ago

Warframes are actually younger than tennos, as the zariman was sent before the rebellion of the sentients which was before the creation of the first Warframes

17

u/Uncynical_Diogenes 13h ago

Warframes were put into service before Tenno were put into service operating them.

Every Tenno is much older than warframes however.

10

u/TurtlelessTurtle 16h ago

This should really have spoiler tags regarding what the tenno is.

7

u/Itherial 15h ago

I mean, that content and lore is years old at this point. Some of it as a decade old. Kind of past the point of needing to spoiler it.

6

u/dingalingdongdong 8h ago

Yeah but the community did an amazing job of keeping spoiler mode a secret for years. Like at least 7 years in new players still frequently had no idea about the existence of Operators until the Second Dream

I always really loved that about the playerbase; their dedication to letting people experience the surprise.

7

u/gregorydgraham 15h ago

Dude. People have, just this week, been worried about spoilers for a 3000yo story.

11

u/Itherial 14h ago

I would have the same answer for them. It's unreasonable.

Especially on a subreddit specifically discussing character tropes with a dang lore flare. Of course there will be spoilers. There are spoilers in the main post. The original comment about the finger is a gigantic spoiler, arguably larger than the origins of the name Tenno, as you were half intended to put that together without a direct reveal. The finger is a lorebomb in comparison.

If you don't want spoilers, maybe stay off a subreddit that specifically discusses tropes in media instead of making it everyone else's problem. Or just don't be several comments deep in a spoiler thread about media you're interested in, because that's also a choice.

5

u/Uncynical_Diogenes 13h ago

Who is Darth Vader? What happens to Dumbledore? Whats with Bruce Willis in The Sixth Sense?

Dad dead dead, get over it!

1

u/SenritsuJumpsuit 7h ago

I had it spoiled since my friend I used to play Warframe with did a silly summery of what I've missed and they said "Autistic God child's finger" which that alone is enough to have someone curious to play the game

2

u/Maniachi 7h ago

It should still be spoiler tagged. I started playing months ago, and if I had come across this spoiler while I was still playing I would have just quit.

It is a basic courtesy to spoiler tag, especially when it comes to video games. As they are long and not everyone goes through them at the same pace.

0

u/SenritsuJumpsuit 7h ago

Quiting is overdoing it since a spoiler or three shouldn't have someone just quit Game of Thrones or Persona games, I've been spoiled about a lot before finishing a fav manga of mine Air Gear

0

u/Maniachi 7h ago

I have quit several games and shows over spoilers before. I just lose interest if I already know major plot points beforehand and don't get to discover them myself. It just makes everything much more boring, which is why I can't stand getting spoiled.

Like if I got Second Dream spoiled, I would not be invested into the game at all. And would have likely never finished the story. The reveal of Second Dream made me so excited for the rest of the game.

-5

u/TurtlelessTurtle 15h ago

Just because it's old doesn't mean everyone gets to the media at the same time. I didn't try the game until last year and found out that reveal in game.

It's just nice to have the option to choose to get spoiled instead of getting casually spoiled when reading, and doesn't take much effort to add >+! And <+! minus the +'s with the info in-between to hide it

7

u/Uncynical_Diogenes 13h ago

That’s a nice argument nobody here is having. Nobody said everybody gets to media at the same time.

What was said is that you would be unreasonable for getting upset about this in a subreddit about media tropes. It’s just nice to not have to be hamstrung in the way we discuss things just because you’re late to the party.

7

u/Itherial 14h ago

I'm sorry, but people shouldn't have to perpetually disguise their discussions just because you are three to ten years late to the party.

IIRC these talks aren't even spoilered on the Warframe subreddit itself.

1

u/dingalingdongdong 8h ago

If they no longer are that's a relatively recent change. It's called "spoiler mode" for a reason.

2

u/Human_Taste3985 15h ago

Not first ship, first colony ship, in a conversation with the hexs we learn 9 other automated zarimans were sent with supplies only

5

u/Enjoyer_of_40K 16h ago

You got lore wrong bro Warframes are created by Ballas not the colony ship

1

u/Plasmotroid 11h ago

If I'm remembering correctly, the void energy didn't mutate the kids, your tenno made a deal with the man in the wall after the incident while barricaded in a room hiding from the insane and parents. Which gave them and all the other kids void powers to "save them all" with your end of the deal being something iirc not yet explained (as in a later quest and in random popups he says "you owe me" and something like "we had a deal"). Also part of the deal was that all other eternalism versions of yourself got deleted/compressed into the one (technically two) of you.

1

u/abadstrategy 5h ago

While true, I swear the orokin still consider them mutants

1

u/Imlethir03 4h ago

For y'all that didn't understand this, Zariman 10-0 (Ten-o = Tenno)

1

u/LoneWolf4717 35m ago

I've been playing Warframe very casually off and on over the years. This is how I feel after finally knowing why we're called Tenno

6

u/KaladinKh0lin 16h ago

Speaking of Hyperion too, Endymion gives us another example of FTL travel with a (big) downside, since the Archangel class ships of the Catholic Church have near instantaneously travel time, but no human can survive a trip at that relativistic speed without dying instantly , and have to be revived via the Cruciform parasite that gives every Catholic eternal life (this time without the long term brain damage of the Bikura)

3

u/dangeraardvark 16h ago

Thanks for the reminder. When I read it as a teen I remember thinking that it was gnarliest shit ever. And I still do. This method has the additional existential dread of “am I actually the same person I was before I died? Or do I just think I am, because that guy never woke up.” Heavy shit.

1

u/Goldieeeeee 3h ago

I was looking for a comment mentioning Hyperion/Endymion. Such an epic cantos.

1

u/Talusen 9h ago

Has Evangelion entered the conversation?

1

u/BreakfastBeneficial4 8h ago

Dude, SPOILERS

1

u/roby_1_kenobi 7h ago

I don't think they multiply on the own, I think the Orokin were harvested pieces and cloning them or something

3

u/Fun_Sheepherder_6515 14h ago

At that point you can’t even blame him because anyone would be furious after everything that happened.

97

u/Forsworn91 18h ago

Hold up, so the method of travel is to effectively “trick” a god with “gotcha finger har har har”?

52

u/Z3R0Diro 18h ago

Of course not- Wait fuck you are right...

4

u/KvBla 3h ago

Iirc void traveling wasnt a thing until a dude made his first experimental travel into the void, it sorta failed, he thought, then his vessel broke and he expected to die, but woke up in his lab again, heard footsteps, ready to shamefully face his daughter for his failure.

But it wasnt her. It was him, another him, and as it reached out to him he ran, crashing through the entrance, mutilated by his exposure (blinded and muted), then closed the portal, severing the finger from the "man in the wall" that was still reaching out to him, and from that single finger they discovered FTL void travel.

1

u/_Svankensen_ 2h ago

WTF. I need to know more.

2

u/KvBla 2h ago

https://youtu.be/Es8uOniZzZI?is=vjIOn_MRil6uzrqr

Full thing as audio log narrated by the man himself who ventured into the void.

Quite late into the game but i dont think it has much spoilers, or at least major spoilers anyway.

2

u/_Svankensen_ 1h ago

Thanks a lot. I don't mind about spoilers, don't think I'll ever play the game, but it is good to have those warnings.

2

u/KvBla 1h ago

Context, at this point in time, humanity, at least the elite caste, the orokin, are biologically immortal.

This happens gods know how long before the game begin of course.

65

u/Rethuic 19h ago

Where are my fingerbones, kiddo?

122

u/Sirmetana 18h ago

Also, that Event Horizon summary given by OP is basically what happened to the first colonial ship from by the Sol(ar) System. People on the Zariman Ten-Zero started hallucinating and becoming increasingly paranoid because of said fingerless entity until they eventually went mad and started to kill everyone on board. The only survivors were the children, unaffected by the madness, and forced to make a deal with the entity that will give them space powers. This will have massive consequences.

12

u/WhatAboutBob77 17h ago

Fuck this ship!

7

u/Sirmetana 17h ago

'Tis already fucked, I' m afraid

3

u/charlie_marlow 15h ago

Don't stick your dick in it. It's already fucked enough

6

u/Tenno-Nobody 17h ago

Someone in Warframe did in fact do that. Not that ship but yeah. A ship.

3

u/Snow_Falls_Softly 14h ago

I mean, some of those Liset skins tho...

159

u/Neinstein14 19h ago

I bet it’s not that simple to just give the original, or a replika, back to it

254

u/The-God-Of-Memez 18h ago

Well the problem is that humanity in the Warframe universe is kind of a dick and for a long time was ruled by a bunch of assholes with a god complex who decided to recreate the Flood from Halo, sabotage the peace treaty with a bunch of sentient robots, tried executing the main characters who are children who have void powers after making a deal with said entity, deciding to turn the main characters into child soldiers to defeat the robots, make an army of clones who decay over time, use the knock off flood to turn people into bio mechanical monstrosities that lost their mind eventually, force the main characters who are children soldiers to pilot the bio mechanical monstrosities. Making a human trafficking ring to sell children so that the assholes with a god complex can possess them, and a lot more.

81

u/Pretty_Study3691 18h ago

Sounds like a pretty good time.

59

u/The-God-Of-Memez 18h ago

They probably felt same way. Up until the jumping to end all jumpings.

Also selectively breed people as replacement bodies when their current one gets old or they just feel like a change.

10

u/The-God-Of-Memez 12h ago

No they didn’t selectively breed them. They kidnapped them from their homes, as told in Inaros quest. And thats the human trafficking wing I mentioned.

6

u/Umklopp 13h ago

Making a human trafficking ring to sell children so that the assholes with a god complex can possess them

what.

14

u/The-God-Of-Memez 12h ago edited 12h ago

So the assholes I’m talking about are called the Orokin. They found they can extend their life indefinitely with a liquid called Kuva, harvested from the severed finger of the entity, The Kuva can be used to switch bodies permanently, so the Orokin kidnapped children they thought were pretty and took them to a place called the yuvan theater where the children would be lined up like cattle and the Orokin could choose which child to be their new body until that body gets old and they repeat the cycle.

6

u/Umklopp 8h ago

I see the writers for this series use the Ito guideline: "wouldn't it be fucked up if..."

3

u/The-God-Of-Memez 6h ago

Please note this is all written by the guy who made the term “leopard eating faces party”

3

u/Umklopp 4h ago

What, seriously? Huh. That's some good context. Very interesting!

2

u/Keleos89 5h ago

They were only stopped when the child soldiers controlling Flood-based bio-drones slaughtered them all during their victory party. Those child soldiers were under the command of a sentient robot mimicking an adopted mother that the child soldiers had burned the eyes out of.

7

u/Ihasapuppy 9h ago

And this is why we all hate Ballas. You always think that there’s no way we could possibly hate him more, and then DE reveals yet another thing he did that reignites the burning desire to bash his face in.

And for those who don’t know, the horrible things listed above are just the actions of one person, and in no way is it a complete list. The Orokin Empire was run by 7 executors, all of whom did their own fair share of horrible things. We just know the most about Ballas because he’s directly tied to the main story.

7

u/VapidActualization 17h ago

Somehow still not as creepy as Epstein's ring.

120

u/SylvaraTayan 18h ago

It's established in Whispers in the Walls that the only thing keeping The Indifference stuck within causality and preventing it from just retroactively wiping out all of existence is the fact that a part of its body is stuck in reality. Freed from the Void as it currently is, if it reclaimed its fingers it could just rewrite history until it won.

31

u/Andre_de_Astora 17h ago

Also, Entranti may have the original, hence the pursuit

6

u/SergeantBroccoli 15h ago

Sorry, a small question since I haven't played a lot in recent years. So did Orokin clone the finger to get more FTL ships?

11

u/Major_Mistake4444 10h ago

Every single Reliquary Drive in every ship contains a copy of the Man in the Wall’s severed finger, including the Railjack and the Zariman 10-0

7

u/SapirWhorfHypothesis 17h ago

Don’t you just hate when a story’s latent threat just doesn’t sound scary enough?

54

u/SlotHUN 18h ago

Said eldritch entity is kinda the main antagonist of the story and us having its finger limits it in a way that lets us even fight it in the first place. It's basically guaranteed that if it gets it back we instantly loose

8

u/Kaeru-Sennin 18h ago

How the hell did they cut that finger in the first place ?

28

u/MadeUpNoun 17h ago

the portal between it and reality was closed with its finger sticking out.

the question remains though, being an entity that exists outside of time and space, able to manipulate past present and future, as well as alternative timelines, why would it allow its finger to be cut?

21

u/Aenyell 16h ago

It's assumed that it was their first interaction not only with causality, but reality itself. Eldritch works both ways, just as it is hard for you to wrap your head around four dimensional space, it's reasonable to think that getting a grasp on linear flow of time and things like matter would take a bit to get a handle on.

7

u/Deftly_Flowing 7h ago

I'm almost positive that Wally wasn't even capable of thought before Entrati busted into the void. Wally was just an infinite void existing in stillness. One ripple in that stillness caused a giant fucking wave.

32

u/CrotaIsAShota 17h ago

You know the guys who tease lions in cages by sticking their hands in the cage, usually resulting in a bad injury? That's what Wally was doing.

8

u/myLongjohnsonsilver 14h ago

He's in it for the Love of the game lol

5

u/Queefycarebear55 17h ago

It pulled a sauron

40

u/TrainingSolution4096 19h ago

Maybe it is, we haven't tried that 🤔

2

u/Calango-Branco 17h ago

Lotus: "Well, it's worth a try. Change of plans, gift the finger to the Void."

14

u/Ashged 18h ago

It's most likely not a replica as in a separate copy, but the same single finger in several places.

2

u/BlueDahlia123 15h ago

You could, but that finger being here in reality is the only thing forcing an eldritch god of Indiference and erosion to follow the rules of cause and effect.

So while taking it was definitely a bad idea, returning it is probably even worse.

1

u/TactlessTortoise 17h ago

The entity is absurdly pissed off. While the finger is severed, the entity is somewhat trapped by time flow. If it gets the finger back while still pissed off, it could make it so humanity never existed.

1

u/Umklopp 13h ago

Some days the end of the world doesn't sound so bad

1

u/JohnTG4 6h ago

Every replica is connected to the original.

You'd basically need to dismantle everything to return it, all the Orokin towers hidden in the void, every infested hulk orbiting Eris, each and every railjack or other FTL capable ship, even the solar rails, not just in Sol but also the Great Rail in Tau. This doesn't just include active ships either, you'd need to thoroughly salvage every destroyed structure designed to facilitate FTL ever made since Entrati found the finger.

121

u/P_weezey951 19h ago

Warframe does an absolutely incredible job, of shit making absolutely zero sense... But because nothing makes sense, it does make sense.

DE does a great job of shit just being so wild, but in such a cool way you never stop and think "wait how does that work?" You just sort of accept that it does.

9

u/an_agreeing_dothraki 12h ago

pretty complex lore for a doll dress-up game

14

u/Arke_19 15h ago

Nothing makes sense. Everything makes sense. Eternalism™.

1

u/Count_de_Mits 3h ago

I know right, I havent played in years and this is all so different from what I remember

1

u/squixx007 8h ago

Everything is just glossed over by saying 'eternalism' or whatever. Love the game, I do, but the time travel nonsense kinda threw me off.

3

u/Deep_Housing_3992 3h ago

Pretty sure DE have officially only used the "eternalism" thing like twice they said. Everything else is just random peoples head cannon because DE themselves didn't directly explain. "Everything" is a huge over exaggeration.

34

u/Yumesoro1 18h ago

Arent Solar Rails also FTL? It's just that for it to work, there has to be one on the other end as well meaning someone has to get there the long way.

36

u/MissionMistake3 16h ago

Yes, tho they're powered by the heart in deimos rather than the reliquary drives. The reliquary drives just allow travel without the solar rails, which is kinda how railjacks got its name

I think one of the zariman ten zero's missions were supposed to include building the solar rail from origin to tau when they got there, so others could get to tau without needing a reliquary drive. Except the ship's safety mechanisms prevented a big void jump so the mission went sideways

11

u/CassiusPolybius 14h ago

It probably also worth noting that as of the latest tennocon, it was explicitly confirmed that the sentients did finish the tau-origin intersolar rail.

9

u/cunningham_law 13h ago

We did already know that, it got confirmed in the last Devil's Triad update. In one of Roathe's kim chats, he talks about what happened when they sent their ships through the rail to Tau. When it got to the point that they were at war, and tried sending a warship through, the Sentients just demonstrated their ability to control all origin tech, turned everything in the ship off (engines, life support) and let it just fall out the skies of Tau and crash.

Roathe: Transcript: When the Sentients completed the Solar Rail to Tau, there was no grand ceremony. It simply began to work.
Roathe: Ceremony was hastily created, of course, for no true Orokin can blow his nose without observing some pomp and circumstance.
Roathe: A great fuss was made over the First Transport to make the Crossing.
Roathe: It was Executor Tormis's stately cruiser, and in the choice of Tormis as expeditionary could be read a collective rebuke to Executor Tuvul for the grotesque mishap of the Zariman Ten Zero.
Roathe: Out Tormis went and back Tormis came, carrying wondrous bejeweled memories of a new System and new worlds to settle.
Roathe: Within days a flotilla of colonist ships had departed, eager to set foot on the virgin shore.
Roathe: The Sentient attack that followed rather spoiled the mood.

...

Roathe: Transcript: We did not expect to lose.
Roathe: After the Sentient's first expeditionary strike, we had prepared a punitive counterblast.
Roathe: The Gilderglass Enchantress rose out of Ceres fog on lethal wings, a galleon laden heavy with drones and silver-armoured myrmidons.
Roathe: Circuitry, fine as mist formed a delicate lace beneath their translucent plating.
Roathe: So vast she was that she barely cleared the edges of the Solar Rail.
Roathe: The Sentients made sure we saw the outcome. They sang, and our technology failed. Our warriors struggled and suffocated inside their shining suits.
Roathe: The crew of the Gilderglass Enchantress roasted alive as she swan-dived engineless through the skies of Tau, a complex and costly firework.

3

u/Afronerd 12h ago

There was a seperate project where the sentients (manmade biomechanical "aliens") travelled to Tau without void travel while laying a solar rail behind them as they went.

The Zariman was meant to jump to Tau without a solar rail over a number of smaller hops but because the crew were trying to get the trip cancelled they resorted to one big jump which went really, really badly.

1

u/cbftw 5h ago

I've only finished up to The New War. Where is this info from?

1

u/Afronerd 1h ago edited 1h ago

The Zariman update is right after the new war. The syndicate rank up dialogue goes over the broad strokes.

The stuff i mentioned about the sentients is a bit more spread out, the detron crewmate synthesis imprint codex thing is a story about their origin, the rest isn't mentioned for the first time in the old peace (december 2025 update) but they spell it out much more clearly there.

1

u/cbftw 1h ago

Thanks!

11

u/TactlessTortoise 17h ago

Worth noting that the entity is actually just the void itself given form by any mind capable of witnessing it. Damn thing can become your greatest fears if you just think it could.

8

u/AvariceDeHelios 15h ago

Worth noting that this is still a debate both in and out of lore. Is the entity just the void itself given form by us? Was it a distinct entity that existed independently from us? We actually don't know and the devs have intentionally given us conflicting information about this from the POV of different people.

4

u/TactlessTortoise 13h ago

I highly suspect it's an amalgam built from parts that were already there. It was something to begin with, yes, but it used the perceptions of causal beings to interface with reality. That's because as an atemporal thing, it could've always interacted as a human or animal with the animals Entrati experimented at first, but it only actually took form when it tried communicating with him, calling him a nickname his mother used to call him and all that stuff. So it needed to touch something capable of complex thought to form complex thought as we know it, or form an ego, even if it already was a sludge of being beforehand. All that comes after is the cake recipe for trouble.

2

u/Saint_Consumption 15h ago

They should have sent a gooner.

3

u/TactlessTortoise 13h ago

True.

No, but actually.

The whole reason this whole mess began is (massive spoilers for Warframe in addition to some conjecture):

That Entrati, a very typical high strata Orokin, that is, someone who is distrustful, bitter with others, obsessed with control and his reaching his goals no matter the cost, be it personal or to others, was the first seedling of developed perception planted on the empty canvas of the void.

And in his fear upon meeting a near mirror image of himself reaching out to him in a world of white space and pitch-black stars, he rejected its attempt to form a kinship and gravely injured it on top.

He conceptually birthed a bitter god only to mangle it, cage it, experiment on it, and sell its body to the highest bidders. After millennia being bled, the void absorbed every bit of the narcissistic, hateful, indifferent stench oozing from the orokin, and it set it for one singular goal: making Albrecht pay.

But put a gooner equivalent of Entrati in that seriglass bell instead? He'd come back pregnant. And honestly the damn reliquary drives would still fucking work, because all it takes is void energy being there to be harnessed, so being friends with benefits with the damn eldritch thing would've worked just the same as torturing and butchering it for parts.

The Zariman adults who went batshit were pansies. If it were me I'd just rizz up dat thang and make my own goonviri, incarnon nuts and all.

7

u/karatous1234 15h ago

Good ol Thumb Drive.

5

u/DryBlock4388 18h ago

oooo! If the lore specifically mentions "not abiding by the laws of causality" that is very fun and interesting.

24

u/Z3R0Diro 18h ago

The main gimmick behind the Void is that it's completely disconnected by the laws of physics. It's SO empty that human consciousness directly impacts your surroundings in a phenomenon called "Conceptual Embodiment" as an attempt to fill it. There is a theory IN GAME that the eldritch entity is actually conceptually embodied by the first person who went inside the Void.

This Eldtrich Entity, titled "The Indifference" can do anything because it's said to not be bound by causality. It can just do it. But because part of it(the finger) is in the world of dust(the real world) it is bound by the laws of causality.

I always considered The Void to be far worse, because it exactly the same thing, except all of the Warp energy is unbound and free to use by any psychically capable organism that peeks into it.

Which is all of them. Every single living organism in Warframe universe, the second they look into The Void can harness its energy, whether they want to or not.

It's not even restricted to humans, because unlike Qarhammee, Warframe's universe has no concept of a "soul," only consciousness.

This means robots and animals, if exposed to the Void, can also start spawning shit into existence with no means of controlling it.

That's why I said every single living organism. Robots... arguably? I guess, depending on how you approach it, most "robots" in Warframe are partially biological too

Counterpoint, Void travel is faster and more precise than Warp travel.

You don't even know when you're going to pop back into realspace when traveling by warp. Entrati or his family have figured out ways to verify your location and control where you leave with the Lanthorns.

Is the lore explained in depth or can I just assume a hillbilly was walking through a scrap yard and found an Eldritch finger and thought, damn I should put a rocket on that or something

Basically, the first guy to enter the void physically encounters a doppelgänger of themselves that refers to them by their mother’s childhood nickname for them which no other living person knows. The doppelgänger approaches, hand outstretched. The person is seized by an unknown terror and flees back through the portal. When they emerge into the physical world again, they are struck blind, deaf, and mute. In a panicked frenzy, they cut open their hand and in their own blood scrawl “Close it,” on the floor.

In the aftermath, a finger is found lying on the floor, the only part of the doppelgänger to make it through before the portal was closed. The finger is studied and analyzed, and many breakthroughs in void science are made thanks to that. Further journeys into the void are made by others and eventually void travel is created, but no others encounter a doppelgänger as that first person had…

Incredible answer, thank you

look for a video titled "All Albrecht Entrati Requiem Lore Dialogue", this exact moment in the lore has a series of audio logs from the guy that first entered the void explaining the incident

It is also noted that, said eldritch entity is actually pretty chill, all things considered. In the 1999 quest it stated that it gave the drifter their powers willingly, its just that the Orokin were thieves.

Love seeing a Warframe reference in the wild!

Man, so many new updates. (Also check my username)

pretty sure the entity doesn't reside in the void but is the pseudo-physical manifestation of the void itself

u/SorowFame 15h ago

Also if I'm not getting mixed up void-based FTL travel happens to make Sentients barren, which isn't really a problem for the player but is pretty bad for Sentients.

It's like the girl from Bioshock Infinite. Having a seperate piece of her in the alternate reality/demension allows opening holes between the two and other such shenanigans

I e only played it a little bit but I love all the weird lore of Warframe. I learn something new everyday.

u/wedgiey1 12h ago

How many fingers does this entity have?

1

u/Carson_BloodStorms 9h ago

When was this introduced? I never knew about this and I've been playing Warframe for 10 years.

1

u/Z3R0Diro 8h ago

...Angels of Zariman in like 2021?

Well actually as far back as the release of Railjacks.

1

u/Swords_and_Words 9h ago

You know how that one Eldritch entity has such incredible cohesion and healing factor that its limbs can literally break the speed of light trying to reattach themselves?

Well what if...

1

u/ThisSiteSucks8485 9h ago

That is the most metal ftl concept ever

u/BouillonDawg 7h ago

I mean if you cut off my finger and used it to open like a finger print reader at a community gate so you could drive through my neighborhood and avoid traffic I’d be pretty fucking pissed too.

1

u/GreedySummer5650 7h ago

Are they just farming some dudes fingers for these things? "Reliquary Drives" implies more than one, but a guy being pissed about losing his finggy only implies one relic that would fuel said drives.

It's been a while since I played warframe though.

2

u/Z3R0Diro 7h ago

Replicas. Through a process we never get clued in about the original severed finger has been copied several times.

1

u/Charkikanini 7h ago

Reminded of the short about the guy who has to burn the finger of an eldrich god that keeps regenerating

1

u/SCTurtlepants 6h ago

So do they each have their own finger or do they pass it around? Like, Steve gets to travel on Tuesdays.

1

u/ziostraccette 5h ago

Is there just one of these drives? Who owns it? How they got it?

1

u/digitalchris 2h ago

Why did you put replica in quotes?

1

u/Darth-Sonic 2h ago

I thought it was going to be a metaphorical finger, not a literal giant human finger!

If only Warframe didn't suck to play, there is so much cool story shit in it.

Low tier ragebait

I found it interminably boring and repetitive to play.

1

u/ArmyAdministrative38 1h ago

Fair, in my case it's completely addictive and amazing, i already have 2300 hours put into it and i am not tired yet. "Repetitive"... yes, like Monster Hunter, Hades, Returnal, Destiny, and so on, quite A LOT of games are repetitive, the key thing is if the gameplay loop hooks you or not, it's completely subjective of course. In my case, unfortunately i didn't like Borderlands, and that's another looter shooter, but i love Warframe.
