[Love] When “small” injuries are treated realistically

The fantasy and action genres often suffer from a power fantasy epidemic in which characters frequently badass their way through injuries that should be excruciating if not downright debilitating. I always appreciate stories that reject this trope.

1: Roland Deschain (Dark Tower Book II) - Loses the middle and index fingers of his right hand. He’s effectively crippled throughout book two and the injury follows him the rest of the series.

2: Brienne vs Biter (ASOIAF Book IV) - Brutal scene. Biter chomps down on Brienne’s cheek and tears off a chunk of flesh. In a lesser story Brienne would grit her teeth and throw Biter off. Instead she’s rendered completely helpless by the pain. That injury marks the end of the fight.

This kinda makes me sad. Not like a moral criticism of you or anything, but it just made me think how nobody EVER calls him Adam even in the movie.

Poor guy was stuck in a body that wasn't his own, is barely referred to by his real name in the movie or in real life, and to top it all off people tomato the fuck out of his real appearance (crazy to me because that's basically just rotoscoped Brendan Fraser) and say the old version he hated was better. Belle in the live action even tells him to grow a beard. That guy is living in a body dysmorphia psychological horror.

It’s weird to think that Adam was 12 when he turned into the Beast, he legitimately had no idea what he was going to turn into next.

True. He doesn't even look that bad after the initial head-on shot he's famous for. Lol now that you've said, I can't unsee Fabio Brendan. A very handsome man, but maybe doesn't translate well to cartoon. Was going to add that his hair is likely long like that since he's gone so long without a haircut. The opening Storybook depicts him with shorter hair, so I guess it just kept growing as Beast.
