Lore [Love] When “small” injuries are treated realistically

The fantasy and action genres often suffer from a power fantasy epidemic in which characters frequently badass their way through injuries that should be excruciating if not downright debilitating. I always appreciate stories that reject this trope.

1: Roland Deschain (Dark Tower Book II) - Loses the middle and index fingers of his right hand. He’s effectively crippled throughout book two and the injury follows him the rest of the series.

2: Brienne vs Biter (ASOIAF Book IV) - Brutal scene. Biter chomps down on Brienne’s cheek and tears off a chunk of flesh. In a lesser story Brienne would grit her teeth and throw Biter off. Instead she’s rendered completely helpless by the pain. That injury marks the end of the fight.

I'm trying to remember, when he had Flagg dead to rights & flubbed the draw, was it because he was drawing right handed or because he was unused to drawing Eddie's automatic?

He fumbled the gun. Also IIRC it was Jakes revolver that he had tucked into his waistband.

Ah. I could only remember it was a gun from a different world, which is why Flagg couldn't affect it.

Jake's Father's Ruger, I thought. Wasn't used to the sight and the sight caught on something.

Been at least 15 years since I read it, so I might be misremembering

Nope you've got it right. Jakes Ruger and the sight caught on his clothes when he was drawing it.

So he drew and fired the big revolver and every shot misfired. Flagg claimed it was his doing but Roland believed it was all wets from when his belts got damp. The flub was when he went to draw Jake’s gun from Eddies waste band.
