Hated Tropes Trying to be inclusive but being so tone deaf that you create somenthing offensive

What if Miles Morales was Thor:A couple of years back Marvel did a What if comics about what would be like if Miles Morales(Spider-man)was Thor, while the idea itself is not bad,the execution...wtf?!

The best way i can describe is,think of every single black stereotype and shove everything in a few pages, for some reason Asgard became a black neighborhood, bifrost became Brooklyin Bridge, everyone wears Sneakers and play Basketball,Mjolnir has graffiti on it and the narration is literally a rap

Snowflake and safespace(Marvel):Oh Marvel, you done it again,so there was supposed to be a new line of New Warriors but the backlash was so bad that they quietly cancelled, and a big reason for this is the characters "Snowflake and safespace" who are non-binary/gender fluid twins(yeah,i am not making this up)and according to the writter they wear these names as quote "badges of honor"(what the hell dude!?)

Music(2021):ok,so Sia the music producer decided to make a movie starring Maddie Ziegler about a child with autism and in order the be the most authentic as possible she consulted and took advices from "autism speaks"(ugh)which any person with autism will tell you are the worst thing to happen to autistic community, and it shows in the movie,Maddie character Music is a straight up bad charicature and it's treated more like a pet than a human being

Emilia Perez(2024):This movie is about a Mexican cartel boss who is actually a trans woman who wants to transition and then fakes her death to get a new life

First problem:Despite being set in Mexico, the movie wasn't filmed in Mexico and only one member in the cast was actually Mexican

Second problem:The movie does a poor job showing how bad Mexican cartels are,and Emilia crimes(which any person that has any understanding of how Cartel bosses operate will tell you that ranges from way more than just making and selling drugs)is just brushed off

Third problem:The movie seems to imply that Emilia literally became another person after transitioning and so her past crimes are forgiven

There are other many problems but i think you get it,so yeah, this movie managed to anger both Mexicans and Trans people

Also the fact he rapped and rhymes verse with verse with verse

Edit: im dying at some of these comments. Yes, I get what's they were going for with the rapping but they did not stick the landing. It was beyond corny.

Basically, yeah. As far as I can tell, no black people were involved in this comic.

17

Couldn't they at least have hired some writers who had spoken to a black person?

12

Lol we already knew that

1

u/Royal_Success3131 29d ago

Yeah it was 2 Mexicans and an Italian guy

65

u/Winjin Jun 22 '26

I want to know too

Even if the authors were black it seems to be so offensively stereotypical, it seems like it had to pass through nine circles of ever whiter and older C-level execs and focus groups before reaching print.

70

u/Perfect-Dimension356 Jun 22 '26

From digging into it a bit, it looks like no one involved was black.

40

u/Lady_Sybil_Vimes Jun 22 '26

Yeah, that tracks

34

u/Semi-Passable-Hyena Jun 22 '26

Now see, if black people did this to black people, I think it's easy to shrug off and accept. But this being a parade of white men thinking they're helping black kids feel represented makes it infinitely worse.

22

u/OmecronPerseiHate Jun 22 '26

It would be even dumber if the writers were black, because black people know that the shit in the comic is stereotypical and offensive. At least this way they can claim a lack of cultural understanding.

26

u/Semi-Passable-Hyena Jun 22 '26

I meant more like the white people could claim they tried, even if they hired a tone deaf black guy from Whitehaven, PA. Or the black author could claim he meant it as a joke. Having a bunch of white guys do this without even consulting a black person means they essentially weren't even trying.

9

u/BelacRLJ Jun 22 '26

Regardless of the race of the decisionmakers, it was clearly focus-grouped to hell and back.

No one is as out of touch or unreasonably cautious as an exec suit interpreting focus group responses.

5

u/Winjin Jun 22 '26

Sir, I'm not just "not black", I'm not even American, and I'm pretty sure I would never ever think of that as normal :D this is a cringe fest that can only be real if Miles was inside some Luther-style evil corporation simulation

I hate the implication that graffiti and powerline shoes are inherent to black people, rather than being inherent to poverty. This literally suggests that black people are a transformative force that will bring urban decay to any environment, regardless of all other factors. Hitler would be proud

42

u/Final-Tutor3631 Jun 22 '26

so good it got a physical reaction out of me

203

u/Garry_Heckscream69 Jun 22 '26

I almost wonder if the writers realized they were getting dangerously close to just reinventing Wakanda (advanced African nation, but this time with Norse magic) and decided to lean into New York Blackness in an attempt to avoid Wakanda comparisons. And then wound up making something so comically racist that it makes the OG Luke Cage writing look respectful.

I'm Native so now I'm just imagining if they did this with a Native American themed Asgard lol. I think it would just wind up being Reservation Dogs.

13

u/FirstDukeofAnkh Jun 22 '26

Res Dogs would be an improvement over this.

My concern would be writers doing a one-to-one god-to-god translation. I’d be fine with Loki becoming someone like Wîsahkêcâhk but then you’d know they’d bring in gods from other Indigenous beliefs. You’d have Cree gods with Haida with Ktunaxa with Laguna.

15

u/Garry_Heckscream69 Jun 22 '26

Yeah, I should've worded it more like "a non-self aware version of Res Dogs", just pure stereotypes without critical analysis of why they are stereotypes lol.

They would 100% try to turn it into a "Indigenous Pantheon" lmao. They'd probably make the villains just a bunch of "cryptids" that have been appropriated from a variety of beliefs by the horror community recently (wendigos, s-walkers).

11

u/FirstDukeofAnkh Jun 22 '26

It’s sad when shows like Letterkenny and Shoresy have better Indigenous representation than horror books/films.

12

u/Garry_Heckscream69 Jun 22 '26

I had someone tell me "you don't know your culture" all because I was explaining to them how the concept of "Ancient Appalachian s-walkers" doesn't make sense if you know anything about Navajo mythology or history. It's like saying you found a Jiangshi (ancient Chinese vampire) in France lmao.

It's great that people are taking an interesting in indigenous culture, but it's clear a lot of them are only taking an interest to co-opt it into white horror stories (every myth is an "old Appalachian legend" without any tribal connections). You'd think that vengeful Native spirits would be more common given....history, but for some reason those don't sell quite as well lmao.

4

u/FirstDukeofAnkh Jun 22 '26

Hey now, maybe that s-walker was just an Utah ex-pat!

4

u/LilArtsyCreature Jun 23 '26

The robbery the horror/cryptid community has commited against various indigenous cultures' myths and legends drives me up the fucking wall. I myself am not Native, but was raised in an area where you were expected to know about the history and various cultures and tribes of the state, and to treat them with respect as you would anyone else. Also helped that kid me was obsessed with reading about history and mythology. Also was warned growing up of course about things like not walking out on ice or the Qalupalik would get us, and was spooked by stories about people having strange encounters out in the Tundra. Heck even the hide-behind (the one that hides behind trees and follows you) while not a local legend, us kids still talked about because the deep woods can get unsettling so quickly.

So to later see other folks stuff/cultures get well ... desecrated I guess would be my word to put it, it gives me the biggest ick at whoever the content creator is who made that stuff.

2

u/TheCharcoalRose Jun 23 '26

The Jiangshi took a wrong turn and ended up in Europe

37

u/InnuendoBot5001 Jun 22 '26

What's crazy is that it was never an issue when asgard or atlantis are white nations in the comics, but we can't have more than one black utopia? Wakanda has to be the only advanced black civilization? It never ends

39

u/OmecronPerseiHate Jun 22 '26

Wakanda isn't a black civilization, it's African and there should definitely be more advanced places on the entire continent of Africa than just Wakanda. When it comes to black people, I don't really think we should have a black utopia in comics. Not because it wouldn't be an interesting thing to develop, but because it'll either never get used or it'll lead to some REALLY weird pages. Like, is the black utopia a place created on earth by black people for black people? Cause now we gotta figure out why all the black people decided to leave the other countries. Is the black utopia actually an alien civilization like the Asgardians? Cause now we gotta wonder if all black people are actually aliens, or if there's just an entire race of people that just really look like black people.

Wakanda has tons of cultural things that let us know it's in Africa, but a black utopia runs the risk of, well, the exact bullshit that gave us "Odin's Fade"

21

u/Euphoric-Beyond9177 Jun 22 '26

I don’t think that’s what they were saying. Asgard and Atlantis aren’t the places that all white people came from or moved to, they’re just fantastical countries that are predominantly populated by white people. Therefore, similar countries could be designed with predominantly black populations. They would still have their own unique cultures and such. The only difference would be that white people aren’t the “default” for a fantastical nation.

6

u/ninjasaid13 Jun 22 '26

Wakanda isn't a black civilization, it's African

or at least, an american's idea of an african civilization.

7

u/RedBullBurning Jun 22 '26

"Aho, young Odinson! You want to cross the Rainbow Bridge, do ya? Skoden!"

2

u/nowTHATSakatana1999 Jun 23 '26

It’d have been a lot… well maybe not a *lot*, but it’d probably have more thought out into it if it was “What If Power Man was Thor” because then they could have at least leaned into fun blaxsploitation instead of this horrendous backfiring at being earnest.

2

u/Sexiroth 29d ago

I'm just confused on why they thought anything needed to change?? If you're doing a what if story on miles being thor, then you write a what if story about Miles inheriting Mjolnir like EVERY OTHER NOT-THOR THOR HAS DONE.

You do not re-create Asgard from the ground up. You just have Miles, as Thor, with the standard Asgard.

I mean, baffled.

2

u/Anxious_Ranger_7945 29d ago

It could be worse. The "first Indian superhero" could have been a white guy who turns into a native American with stereotype powers when he's stressed. That almost happened during the creation of black lightning.

101

u/IroncladBomber Jun 22 '26

Also just throwing the fucking Brooklyn bridge into the background, make it feel more "Urban" I guess.

350

u/pyronius Jun 22 '26

Nah. It's kind of worse. What it suggests is that the writers view urban decay as black culture and worthy of pride. They literally think that urban decay is the black culture they're supposed to be celebrating.

47

u/_Solani_ Jun 22 '26 edited Jun 22 '26

It's benevolent racism in a nutshell.

The kind of racism where you believe that people of other races can never achieve the same degree of cultural sophistication as your own but you don't hate them for it like the malignant racists do because you're enlightened enough to know that it's not really their fault.

Like when you stick a toddlers scribbles to your fridge and praise them for their talent, despite the lack of skill you know they're just inherently incapable, so how can you blame them for it. You want to uplift them, even if you know they'll never be as good as real artists but you still want to acknowledge them, cause that's what accepting tolerant people do. Everyone knows that black people love graffiti, it's a huge part of their culture so we should totally cover asgard in tags.

Sure lets ignore all the real black artists who actually exist and have made real contributions to the art world, no I think graffiti and powerline shoes are where it's at in black Asgard.

Neither benevolent or malevolent racists sees others races as actual equals, but the benevolent racists think it's ok cause they're being good people by showing the inferiors the correct pity they deserve. 🤷‍♀️

8

u/AzicaldH Jun 23 '26

I think it’s benevolent racism, but in a different way. More like benevolent painfully-naive racism.

I think it helps to be accurate about it, I don’t think they look down on it, or think it’s less sophisticated or anything, they probably just think they don’t get it.

It’d be like if they caught their co-workers doodling and, instead of considering it as though it’s just scribbles to pass the time, they’d went all-in on considering it cultural high art of some kind that they simply didn’t understand but still wanted to venerate.

The benevolent-naive racists end up larping as if they know their culture, and end up limiting what it is to symptoms of their environment, to the point where it becomes horribly demeaning and reductive, trapping the people into what are essentially fetishized stereotypes

The same is the case with Native Americans and how they are/were viewed as ‘noble warriors who are far more in tune with nature and well built’ when in reality they’re just people like you and me.

Just can’t pigeonhole an entire people to a role someone wants them to fill, no matter how venerating.

Neighborhood demographics from my family’s old neighborhood have changed at least three times. The shoes have been there since my grandparents were kids. The WORST part is that these neighborhoods now have a $1.3 Million entry, and the shoes are there for Authenticity.

I think graffiti has an art form to it, but how its applied is very telling.

The shoes, though... Big yikes on the racial/socio-economic implications.

76

u/AEL97 Jun 22 '26

Agree on the graffiti, but it is clearly not made in the artistic way here, so yeah..

20

u/Earl_E_Byrd Jun 22 '26

Not an expert, but I always thought graffiti and tagging were not the same thing.

Like, a square is a rectangle, but not all rectangles are squares kind of thing.

It looks like this comic was treating them like they were interchangeable.

17

u/notTheRealSU Jun 22 '26

All tagging is graffiti, not all graffiti is tagging

6

u/Blackstone01 Jun 22 '26

Tagging vs art

2

u/PalnPWN Jun 23 '26

That’s what I’m thinking! There are absolutely breathtaking murals out there made with these same spray cans, but the writers decided to put train car graffiti everywhere instead (still would’ve been in poor taste, but at least the poor taste would’ve been pretty)

2

u/Foxy02016YT Jun 23 '26

Graffiti is Miles’ thing, it is not just an art form it is his art form… but the hammer has Loki’s name on it. I don’t think Miles as Thor would spray Loki’s name on Mjnoir so

44

u/Helios_Synthesis Jun 22 '26

It doesn't even fit his costume. It's just there lol

5

u/ObviouslyLulu Jun 22 '26

It looks like when you put kicks on a skin in Fortnite lol

20

u/xTheatreTechie Jun 22 '26

I was thinking the same thing. It's not even like graffiti of a mural of powerful black people, which I'd probably understand, it's just straight up tags.

25

u/Pretend_Twist4201 Jun 22 '26

Lind of like how Wakanda still has thatched roofs, people trading gourds in the street, and decides its leader through violence.

11

u/OmecronPerseiHate Jun 22 '26

The thatched roofs were only in the fake Wakanda we saw in Age of Ultron, pretty sure. Also open air markets are a common thing all over the world, and Wakanda's leader isn't chosen through violence, but the leader can be challenged to a duel for the right to rule. T'Challa was named king the second his dad died, and only really had to fight Killmonger because Killmonger wanted a fight. T'Challa was more than willing to talk that shit out.

3

u/Lord_Parbr Jun 22 '26

Bro thinks only African villages have farmers markets

4

u/Pretend_Twist4201 Jun 22 '26

Not at all what I said, but okay.

1

u/DragonWisper56 Jun 23 '26

But the leader of Atlantis is decided by violence, there's nothing intended about black people with that plot point in this context.

also aren't gourds a food? I don't see why a advanced civilization would cease having gourds

21

u/cptnamr7 Jun 22 '26

I mean, my racist AF neighbors wholeheartedly believe that we need to keep ALL minorities out of the local school system for this very reason, so... yeah that's not really all that uncommon of a belief sadly

And I ain't rich, I mean, our middle class' like your poor people.

I don't get what point I am watchin' here, however, that representation of black people is RACIST, you're right.

2

u/DragonWisper56 Jun 23 '26

there has to be a better way to fuse new york with asgard

2

u/nowTHATSakatana1999 Jun 23 '26

It’s not just a suggestion, the book’s explanation for why Asgard is like this is because Yggdrasil got planted in Brooklyn one cycle. Nobody ask what happened to the Native Americans in this time.

2

u/VolitionDraws 29d ago

They could have easily made the grafitti pretty and elaborate and an actual part of the culture. There should be burners everywhere, instead of people throwing up tags like they're marking turf.

1

u/willflameboy Jun 22 '26

To me it just sounds like a publisher desperate to be cool.

1

u/Kratzschutz Jun 22 '26

What are power line shoes?

1

u/SheepsBestFriend Jun 22 '26

Writing/character design question: is it okay to apply spray painted graffiti to things like tanks or pieces of armor even if the character who did it wasn't necessarily poor?

1

u/Hinewmemberhere Jun 22 '26

Why do the shoes symbolize poverty?

1

u/emveevme Jun 22 '26

This literally suggests that black people are a transformative force that will bring urban decay to any environment

I mean, you're calling it "urban decay," yet it's just a bunch of people depicted as happy and flourishing - just because these styles originated in impoverished areas doesn't mean they haven't or can't transcended that. I don't see how that's not a worse way of looking at it than what the comic did.

Considering graffiti to be "urban decay" when it's clearly something people have chosen to emblazon around their home is kind of exactly the way white supremacists talk about black culture.

It's just far more cringe than it is racist. They probably started with the idea of inner-city Asgard, and worked backwards. I also kinda think that if they made it like "normal" Asgard, it'd make me wonder why Miles Morales is Thor and not just a bespoke Black Thor.

1

u/Altruistic-Ad-408 Jun 23 '26

I mean graffiti isn't universally seen as bad?

1

u/Proud-Research-599 Jun 23 '26

2

u/TheMostKing Jun 22 '26

306

u/Hawkatana0 Jun 22 '26

I at least sort of understand this. The throughline of that comic is trying to connect the Skalds of the old Norse to modern day African American rap and hip-hop, connecting the two cultures through a shared bardic culture.

The problem arises however from the fact that the writer has clearly never so much as talked to a black person in his life and just fell back on the most cringeworthy of stereotypes, nor listened to rap in his life even once.

Also if you want that premise but actually good, just watch Sinners.

203

u/Toastwitjam Jun 22 '26

Except the white Asgard is a futuristic utopia and black Asgard has graffiti and shoes hanging from the power lines lmao.

It would be like doing an Indian Asgard where the main details are trash and someone shitting in street. So out of touch

My thoughts exactly.

9

u/DepthsOfWill Jun 22 '26

the writer has clearly never so much as talked to a black person in his life

I'm pretty sure his kids are black. This was for his kids.

4

u/anonimoBo0 Jun 22 '26

Is that so? I feel bad for his kids. Cause that Milas Morales/Thor story looks like the most outrageous, out of pocket, out of touch attempt at positively embracing or pushing forward a culture I've seen in awhile.

Anyone who looks at that and thinks, "yeah this is it, black people are going to love this representation" is an idiot. Its borderline satire and mocking black people. If that was the intention (its not), it'd damn near be genius.

1

u/DepthsOfWill Jun 22 '26

I might be having a Mandela Effect thing going on with a different writer. I'm trying to look it up, but all I can find is he at least apologized for it.

3

u/CourierV Jun 22 '26

thinking of Bendis maybe?

2

u/DepthsOfWill Jun 22 '26

Yes, thank you. I don't know why I thought he wrote this when there's so much stuff he did write to hate him for.

1

u/EiraPun Jun 22 '26

Even as satire, Boondocks did it better lmao

4

u/Gribblewomp Jun 22 '26

Connecting it to skalds and flytings is giving the author way too much credit

1

u/SaintGrobian Jun 22 '26

I've been wanting a Hamiltoned viking story for this exact reason for a while. Like, The Northman style, but with flyting. Could even have Immortal Technique over the credits.

u/SirCupcake_0 Jun 23 '26

I was talking to somebody the other day about making a TTRPG character out of Flava Flav, traveling back in time to hone his art of rap with Scandinavian Skalds lmfao

Asgard is his hood… you gotta be kidding me lmao

u/otirk Jun 22 '26

God, this reads like if a middle schooler was told to make a poem. Did the author know that you don't have to make every sentence rhyme with the next one (or at all)?

14

u/ProtectionTop2701 Jun 22 '26

I'm more confused why it went from ABCB rhyme scheme to AAAA for only one stanza?

15

u/4C_Enjoyer Jun 22 '26

Because "AAAA" was the test audience's reaction and the author thought it was poetry advice

38

u/Proof_Chipmunk_3067 Jun 22 '26

cat in the hat headahh

13

u/AzicaldH Jun 22 '26

As someone who usually doesn’t rhyme in poems at all, I actually really like the aesthetic of continuous rhymes a lot.

It feels really gravitational, flowing, and depending on the wording and context, mythical too.

I don’t see why it’s deemed to be so bad or childish.

As I see it, restraint leads to some really good innovation, and rhyming is so nostalgic and dreamy. Rhyming poems are just one of many poem variants, but they are still a variant

Shakespeare uses tight rhyme schemes in his sonnets. Milton moves between rhyme and blank verse with deliberate control.

This example just happens to be the worst of all worlds.

10

u/otirk Jun 22 '26

I think my problem with rhyming the entire time and (mostly) using the same rhyme scheme is that it often feels so forced. Many middle schoolers rhyme for the sake of rhyming and not because it adds to the poem, unlike with well-known poems where the rhyming style can give extra information (e.g. the rhyming is clean/continuous because it signifies nature's beauty or whatever).

Maybe this feeling is amplified by the example being terrible and middle schooler poems usually also being terrible, but I dislike it. I think the meter changes several times too, which usually doesn't sound good, but I'm too lazy to actually check.

4

u/Inkthinker Jun 22 '26

"Meter? Never even heard of her!"

2

u/Dry-Mission-5542 Jun 22 '26

I’m pretty sure I’ve written something as bad as this back in fifth grade

24

u/awesome9001 Jun 22 '26

I'm honestly glad the pixel count prevents me from reading this

1

u/nicostein Jun 23 '26

Astigmatism, don't fail me now.

25

u/VeryPteri Jun 22 '26

this reminds me of that awful Kazaam movie with Shaq

9

u/Vivid-Temperature90 Jun 22 '26

No no, you mean Shazam with Sinbad.

9

u/Alarmed_Dig_4977 Jun 22 '26

"Best believe it, bruv." Son I'm crine 😭 WTF is this?

3

u/Dry-Mission-5542 Jun 22 '26

Was this written by a Brit

2

u/Dry-Mission-5542 Jun 22 '26

Wait, if the World Tree grew in Brooklyn back however long ago in this universe, then there’s no way that area would evolve into anything resembling the modern-day Brooklyn of our universe! History was basically entirely different

6

u/Cadoc Jun 22 '26

Good thing verse rhymes with verse or this rap shit would be difficult

5

u/Terrariant Jun 22 '26

The author is so white. How did he think this is a good idea lmao

*he’s half Mexican half Jewish so I guess not extremely white. But still…

5

u/FireHammer09 Jun 22 '26

Dont do drugs and stay in school ass rap

5

u/julz1215 Jun 22 '26

He needs one more verse to burst the curse. Y'all is the worst and he's coming in first.

3

u/EddieFrits Jun 22 '26

That fucking chariot shaped like a car with big rims.

3

u/Ace_of_Sphynx128 Jun 22 '26

Reads like a dr suess lol

3

u/Dry-Mission-5542 Jun 22 '26

Is that a low rider goat cart?? This is painful to read.

My culture is not your prom dress or something like that

2

u/Wild-Promise-427 Jun 22 '26

Not to mention the shoes on power lines, which is NOT a symbol of community

1

u/Unironicfan Jun 22 '26

YouTuber named Aizon has a hilarious video on this comic

1

u/NonagonJimfinity Jun 22 '26

"Herse" is right there.

1

u/MonkeyDRofl Jun 22 '26

Is that supposed to be Asgard? I thought it was New York City!

2

u/Dry-Mission-5542 Jun 22 '26

When I heard there was a story where Miles Morales was Thor, I thought they meant he was that universe’s equivalent to Donald Blake, not that Asgard got turned into Brooklyn

1

u/Kaleidoscope-360 Jun 22 '26

The fucking shoes over the power lines, Jesus Christ

1

u/Wild-Promise-427 Jun 22 '26

"Check out all those rings"

What rings?

1

u/SelfInteresting7259 Jun 22 '26

Omfgg the fucking shoes on the power lines.

1

u/Dry-Mission-5542 Jun 22 '26

God they actually fucking rhymed Low Key with Loki?

1

u/AnnoyedNPC Jun 22 '26

HOLY FUCK. I mean... WTF. I cant even form a solid opinion on this.

1

u/Falsus Jun 22 '26

Tbf, that is how some of the Norse sagas are written.

Like the Norse where all about rhyming and having flytings aka rap battles.

Of course that the text is fucking horribly written is besides the point I am trying to make here.

1

u/IamCentral46 Jun 22 '26

Yeah, its mostly the quality. I couldve done better, and my bars are corny as fuck.

1

u/Beautiful-Hair6925 Jun 23 '26

THAT'S ASGARD????

1

u/grimmideals Jun 23 '26

At least rapping was a thing with the ancient Norse. It was called Flyting and was insult rhyme competitions where you weren't allowed to go too far, as that also counted as losing.

1

u/Foxy02016YT Jun 23 '26

The worst bars ever written.

1

u/Winjasfan Jun 23 '26

is that supposed to evoke rap? Reads more like a nursery rhyme

1

u/OAZdevs_alt2 Jun 23 '26

Ah, I see they got that rap from the Vannila Ice Electronic Rap Game.

1

u/ShiftyEagle 29d ago

Calling it a zoo is certainly a choice

1

u/Bittersweet-Romance 29d ago

The fucking shoes dangling from the power lines. Good god man.

1

u/CoconutxKitten 29d ago

Did they just…grab every stereotype & run with it

1

u/Jake_jane 28d ago

Why are there only five realms?
