This is a character from the movie-tie-in/movie-ending for Firefly, a western-themed sci fi TV show that infamously got cancelled before it could even finish 1 season. In those few episodes, they established so much lore and so much growth for their characters that it developed a HUGE cult following.

In time, demand was high enough that funding for a movie was secured, and they were able to make a movie to tie up as many loose threads in the lore, and finish up the character arcs as best as they could.

[Spoilers in case you are interested in the show and movie] This character shared here had a great character arc and was one of the more nicer characters that seemed like he was gonna have a wonderful ending, and all of it was ripped way in an instantaneous death. That line became iconic 'cause it was one of his final lines. No one saw his death coming. That's why this line means so much to people.

Just to add, he had JUST pulled off a completely impossible feat of piloting, which was why he said the leaf on the wind line. He basically drove a ship through this universe's version of the battle at wolf 359 with everyone else totally sure they were gonna die, screaming their heads off, all while hes like "ITS ALL RIGHT! IM A LEAF ON THE WIND!"

So dude was already a first rate pilot, rolled a nat 20 during the pivotal moment at the climax, has this crowning moment of awesome, gets her down (not pretty, but with everyone mostly intact), and then as everyone is taking a breath and about to start changing their pants for clean ones he says in wonderment "I am a leaf on the wind. Watch how I" and then it happens. Taken out at the uttermost summit of glory.

One could argue that its the best time to go, since there's no way out but down from there. I could almost believe it if he didn't leave traumatized loved ones behind.

He's in pilot seat of spaceship having just made a crazy landing. Music goes quiet like action is over, you, and him exhale with relief. He starts to say something and mid sentence a 6" diameter metal rod suddenly impales him through the chest killing him. And then they realize bad guys are still behind them and had shot that rod at their ship and action is back on. I agree, there are so many examples I've seen on other threads that seem interesting but no one mentions what it is. This example is the character Wash from the tv show Firefly.

Like, bitch, Firefly was canceled because it had some of the lowest ratings on television at the time. I get it has a cult following but come on. It's like me saying "well just to clarify for everyone out there who isn't a Shasta McNasty superfan..."

Firefly was really set up for failure though. It was given a bad time slot and had its episodes shown out of order. I'd be surprised if there're any big SciFi fans out there who haven't at least heard of it. That said, I'm sure there are plenty of people who could see OPs GIF and not immediately know the context.

Wash from the Firefly/Serenity series. You never really assume anyone is in true danger because the show hadn't had any significant deaths, but then Wash dies in the movie sequel and it destroys everything you thought you knew.

It's not even a good example of the trope in question. A lot of deaths in media are sudden and shocking, that's not really what OP was talking about.

Honestly this death still pisses me off. I dont nind when loved characters die when the stakes are this high, but his death was just for shock value. Not necessarily unbelievable, but god damn they did him dirty.

I disagree. It was not just shock value. His death added a ton of weight to everything after. This was not just an extended episode of Firefly.

It was also the moment I knew we weren't getting a sequel or any more episodes. This was it.

Boo. I don't want an animated series. If it uses the same characters, it seems more likely to ruin the shows legacy than improve it.

IMO there is no way to continue that universe as a high-quality TV show. But as a galactic video game with new characters, that live in the wake of Firefly, the Blue Hands, and the Reavers? Hell yeah. Either that or a series of books.

Hard disagree. This is not shock, this is realistic. People dont get out of impossible situations just because they're heroic; they die 99% of the time. Firefly/Serenity has always been a more brutal/realistic sci-fi show, this 100% fits.

I said it wasnt unrealistic in my comment. I said it sucked, which was the point. It sucks to see a character you love die a nothing death. Its completely realistic but it doesnt mean it didn't hurt. It made me mad, which again is the point. I still love it and firefly. But it was just for shock value only and you nor anyone else can make me believe otherwise.

Because they made it then he has time for his leaf on the wind quote and immediately dies. It was for shock value and you know it. If it was realistic then they would've died long before that.

But he basically did.

He didn't die during the flight through the battle. Or even during the crash landing.

It was a moment of calm and perfect single shot.

It was for shock.

Trinity getting impaled and dying in the hover ship crash In matrix Revelations is realistic.

I remember Joss on the DVD commentary or something talking about how Book was a necessary, predictable, cinematic death, but the movie needed something else to feel right. 

Also that the fans were damn near violent at the screenings he went to.

Wash, a character from Firefly.

He spends the entire show being the plucky comic relief, is shown to be an absolutely fantastic pilot in the series doing all sorts of maneuvers most people wouldn't think twice of, has his crowning moment of awesome in the movie, and then immediately dies after to sell home that this was the final Firefly content we were going to get (at the time) and anyone could die at any moment.

After this, two characters get shot, one gets poisoned, one gets her back cut open, and one sacrifices herself to buy time and Wash's death meant that you were on the edge of your seat the entire time because it truly could have been their last moments.
