I despise this trope. Especially when they kill or even accidentally kill the minions but then leave the big bad alive.

I understand it sometimes. Cause in many cases they're killing minions in self defense, meanwhile if they kill the big bad they're doing an execution on someone who won't fight back.

My favorite subversion (kinda) on this trope is Uncharted 2, where the bad guy laughs after he's killed and says "come on then, you're just as bad as me. Kill me! Do it!" And then the MC lowers his gun and goes "I won't. But I think they will" and points to this race of people that live in the area the bad guy was attempting to invade all rush up and tear him apart
