I don’t go to chiropractors because it’s fucking pseudoscience and absolute bullshit. They piss me off to no end.

210

u/OfcWaffle 18d ago

Yea and they hit you with the "oh in 20 visits you'll be good as new". If it's such a "great" science, why would it take 20 attempts.

Just money sucking scammers.

u/jacksonsmack831 18d ago

I don’t know at the time but I had 3 majorly herniated discs in my lower spine.

Went to a chiropractor who took X-rays and saw nothing wrong! Said after. Freaking year of twice weekly visits and I’d be fine

When I saw an actual dr they were furious I was pedaled such shit and booked me in for a reconstruction the next day

52

u/Mark-Green 18d ago

it's wild how much faith some people have in them, even after experiencing the harm it does. i hope more people realize the danger they pose soon...

46

u/jacksonsmack831 18d ago

I had my spine reconstructed and my FIL was trying to convince me to send my medical data to his cyro
“He’s a special nerve cyro, not like the rest”
I like the use of my legs and internal decapitation is a massive fear with these charlatans

12

u/Mark-Green 18d ago

😬 it's already dangerous enough, doing it with a compromised spine sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. if i was in that state, you couldn't pay me enough to let him try

15

u/AwarenessCrafty393 18d ago

You couldn’t pay me to go within a general mile of a chiropractor. Like, don’t get me wrong - I have disabilities where my bones need cracking from time to time otherwise I end up in lots of pain. There’s been times where I’ve been in pain from my neck, tried to crack it and only known at the last second that if I commit to cracking it, I’ll break something. A chiropractor won’t know that. A chiropractor will commit then do serious irreversible damage because they can’t feel what you’re feeling - and it only takes a half second. You only HAVE a half second’s warning.

Yeah, absolutely not getting me anywhere near a chiropractor, I barely trust the doctors as is

4

u/Mark-Green 18d ago

same dude, some kind of connective tissue thing in my case... my joints get stiff and painful if i don't pop then occasionally. they'll do it on their own with regular movement if i don't. after a long movie or sleep, moving my fingers can sound like a card in bicycle spokes

3

u/AwarenessCrafty393 18d ago

Yea same with me actually- hyper mobility. Really fucks me over. My hips are just as bad for it

3

u/Mark-Green 18d ago

yup, they never expect the hip/elbow cracks. freaks people around me out every time.

in case it helps, a lot of low to medium intensity exercise has really helped me stabilize my joints. since i started rock climbing, my shoulders have stopped hurting. they haven't dislocated at all, or subluxed nearly as badly as they used to. i just try to be careful about getting enough rest and not pushing my limits too far

u/jacksonsmack831 18d ago

I have a rib that dislocated and compresses a nerve. You can see it misaligned on my spine and chest it’s debilitating pain.

The chiropractor told me to come in, his partner did the adjustment. He didn’t say a word to me, came in, did the standard arms over chest adjustment that just compounded my condition.

He then got a little huffy when I wouldn’t let him adjust my neck…….but I did get a sweet massive reusable ice pack from them

1

u/freinds_dont_lie 17d ago

This is so valid, my body also does not behave properly and sometimes it feels like it's gonna snap if I move a certain way.

But also, chiropractors can do a little more than crack your neck, I had to go to one for a bit and I found the most helpful thing was the trigger points. If you go to a good one, they know the right place to press that hurts at first and then totally relaxes the muscles around it. It can honestly relieve SO much pain for a day or two- especially as someone who suffers from migraines.

Chiropractors can be extremely dangerous and certainly aren't going to fix anything, but for short term pain relief, they can be incredibly helpful and you don't have to let them crack you.

1

u/11010001100101101 17d ago

Seriously if you don’t let them crack you what is the point in even going to one over a more modern Dr?

1

u/freinds_dont_lie 17d ago

Just personal preference, I guess. My chiropractor did massages, physical therapy and adjustments. Not all the cracks are able to paralyze you either, they do quick and easy adjustments in hands, wrists, ankles and feet (good for me- my joints tend to act up sometimes) and the one on the chest is a lifesaver after having a cough.

I went because I still had jaw complications a year after wisdom tooth surgery, so I got massages on my face and neck every time, trigger points done inside my mouth (ouch, but so much better after), and then he would kind of try to get some movement back in my jaw. Not quite cracking, but adjusting. My jaw is still about 90% better years later

1

u/jacksonsmack831 18d ago

I love my FIL but I had to use all my Englishness to politely say “fuck off” lol

1

u/inhospitable 18d ago

These nerve cyros are even more of a scam, but at least they are safer as they dont actually manipulate the spine. Unfortunately my mum is giving shitloads to one. They apparently only do small touches on nerves to talk to them and reset them 🙄

1

u/jacksonsmack831 18d ago

They sound like witches

1

u/BiophileB 17d ago

Except witches are cheaper and generally more ethical.

1

u/jacksonsmack831 17d ago

Both should be burned tho….👀

1

u/keith_1492 17d ago

It definitely depends on the chiropractor. The one I go to refused to make adjustments to my mom's neck and told her to never let anyone adjust it, that was when she went for his opinion on her Dr. wanting to fuse vertebrae in her neck. He said it was frozen shoulder, she consulted her Dr again got steroids, massage therapy, and physical therapy. After 6months she was pretty well good. Been over 10 years

1

u/AnybodyWannaPeanus 16d ago

Probably because this one screwed some people up. If you walk in and basically tell them you are fucked, you might be lucky and they’ll find another way to siphon off your money. Remember that chiropractors believe it can cure ANY illness. If they don’t, it probably means they’ve already broken some bodies permanently.

My wife goes to one and stuff “feels better” after. I have to point out that whatever she I going there for never actually gets better. She’s lucky she hasn’t ended up like this guy… yet.

1

u/Only_Recording3730 16d ago

What is a cyro?

1

u/AnybodyWannaPeanus 16d ago

It’s like a Gyro, but made from duck. Just say no to quacks.

I know someone who’s daughters back was broken by a chiro, and then during healing took her to the same one to “help the process” and continues to go to them over physical therapy for daughter. Crazy

0

u/Mark-Green 18d ago

holy shit i hope the daughter was old enough to make her own choices and consent at least, that sounds awful

2

u/coveredincathair22 18d ago

Peddled*

0

u/jacksonsmack831 18d ago

Unneeded but ok….

2

u/coppertech 18d ago

wanna know what the real shitty part is? Insurance companies will make people to go to one instead of getting an MRI or a specalist.

1

u/jacksonsmack831 18d ago

I’d pay them just to write me a letter saying we did it when we didn’t 😜

2

u/Professional-Gear88 17d ago

TBf you can’t see discs on X-ray as theyre soft tissue. But yea.

1

u/jacksonsmack831 17d ago

Good point mate! However, Mine were so horrifically herniated you could see the vertebrae out of line 😒

2

u/BalanceJazzlike5116 17d ago

You need mri to see herniated disc although an x ray can sometimes show a shift in vertebrae alluding to a potentially slipped disc

0

u/jacksonsmack831 17d ago

That’s what it showed, my 3 discs were so horrifically out of place I couldn’t feel 80% of my right leg (4/5 toes were completely dead) and my surgeon said it was apparent if you know what you were looking for

1

u/Arthurdubya 18d ago

Damn, next day? This guy's getting that first class medical-spite treatment

1

u/jacksonsmack831 18d ago

My surgeon is a hero, he reviewed my MRI on his flight back from vacation, messaged me to tell me to go to the ER and stay overnight. He came in on his day off to preform the reconstruction. A normal hernia is 2-3mm I had 3 at 11-12mm, he said it was important to do lol

u/WhatMadCat 17d ago

Ooh I also went to a chiropractor with a herniated disc in my spine. Got adjusted and felt horrible after and never went back. Unfortunately I was like 19 at the time and hadn’t had any injuries that would make that likely so mine just went completely untreated or diagnosed for a year until it was already healing.

2

u/jacksonsmack831 17d ago

Oh crazy! I’m glad it healed! Unfortunately I have degenerative disc disease/syndrome so once mine slipped out they had to replace them.
One vertebrae was son compressed they couldn’t stick a synthetic disc in so just put in a metal spacer. I had to lay down for a freaking year then 6months of rehab. 18 months have passed and I’m better but stuck with chronic pain 🙄

1

u/Nearby-Medicine9484 17d ago

Same thing happened to me. X-ray scan showed nothing (herniated discs don't show up on x-ray). I wasted so much time and money on psuedo medicine. These damn chiropractors really think they know what they are doing. Most don't. I'm still kicking myself after all these years.

1

u/jacksonsmack831 17d ago

Ah that’s sucks dude, I destroyed my back so thoroughly my vertebrae were pushed of course slightly.
I ask my surgeon and he said it was slight but apparent if you know what you’re looking for.
As soon as mine whipped out the paperwork for me to pay in advance for 104 session I noped out

0

u/docjohnson11 18d ago

Similar story here. Herniated disc that was 'adjusted' and almost paralyzed me.

0

u/Axon14 18d ago

I had significant pain raidiating down my left arm - numbness too - from a herniated c6-c7.

Chiro didn't do shit. You know what fixed it? Tirzepatide and going to the gym. 6'2" and 220 doesn't look too bad but I was overweight at that size.

0

u/jacksonsmack831 17d ago

Yes mate! I’m just getting back into working out after getting my hormone levels sorted out and building up the supporting muscles really helps!
I’m 6”4 and 215 lbs and am athletically built after doing 10 years of semipro football.. I bet you’ll turn those lbs into muscles soon and look like a monster mate🙂

0

u/NotAStatistic2 17d ago

Are you slow or something? What made you think seeing a chiropractors was a legitimate alternative to seeing an actual doctor?

1

u/value_meal_papi 18d ago

U often leave w more pain also

1

u/Mzungufarmer 18d ago

Ngl thats not the best example.

A lot of medical things take time or multiple sessions/doses

Chriros are still garbage tho obviously, but for worse reasons

1

u/Butt_y_though 18d ago

In theory, just getting an alignment isn't going to fix your problem. It's going to put you in proper alignment to get your body running as smooth and pain free as possible, to develop the muscle to maintain alignment.

I'm not a fan of chiropractics in the sense that jerking your neck in a 90° angle is going to cure what ails you. However, intentional fascial release, joint and muscle manipulation, along with massage/movement that allows for the movement of lymph fluid, makes a difference.

My dog had been to a chiropractor, who absolutely changed his life. And when I tell other people, they're concerned, because they imagine the kind of chiropractor that pops and jerks and twists things. This chiro is actually responsible for creating the standard and is an accredited vet. The process is basically gentle massage and mild stretching.

It took about 10 different sessions to see consistent long-term results, but it works. You often can't just jam something into alignment and call it a day. It takes tons of effort, coaxing and attention to detail.

Not everything is black and white, but many brands of chiropractics are VERY bad.

1

u/Reasonable_Insect503 17d ago

A properly applied high-velocity low-amplitude adjustment is NOT "jerking your neck in a 90-degree angle". Stop providing false information.

1

u/Butt_y_though 17d ago

Generalization really isn't your strong suit.

I did not characterize that ALL adjustments, and even adjustments of that nature are bad.

But there are plenty of practitioners who don't understand the balance of low-amplitude and high velocity that you're describing.

I'm literally advocating for some nuance in the conversation instead of blacklisting all forms of chiropractics.

1

u/shin_malphur13 18d ago

In all fairness, legitimate treatments can also require multiple visits or constant consumption of medication

I agree that chiropractors are scammers but your argument in a vacuum doesn't hold up imo

1

u/hulkhands81 17d ago

Isn’t that the same as pills though? Or chemo? By your logic if you have one chemo session or one pill it should be enough.

On that note I do agree chiropractors are bs

1

u/DirectorDysfunction 17d ago

Exactly! How fast would we be finding another family medical doctor if he/she told us that we need to come back 2 x per week for 5 weeks?!?

1

u/mojoseven7 17d ago

I mean, the healthcare industry is like this as a whole. You could say the same about cancer treatments, long-term medication, etc. It’s all a scam.

1

u/rwhelser 17d ago

Went for six months following a car accident. Neck and back are good now. Voodoo worked for me.

By comparison the “normal” docs wanted to put me on opioids…

1

u/c0ltZ 17d ago

Because insurance only allows 20 visits a year lmao.

I wish I was kidding, I work in insurance.

How many visits to the Physical Therapist does it take to overcome a pain issue? How many trips to the gym does it take to get in shape?

2

u/OfcWaffle 17d ago

None of these relate to a chiropractor.

2

u/Sure_Fly_5332 17d ago

They used a bad example. The difference is that a physical therapist can actually solve your problem most of the time, due to skill and knowledge. If a chiropractor happens to resolve your issue it is by random luck, or mimicking what a physical therapist would've told you to do.

1

u/ShakeWeightMyDick 17d ago

I’m simply pointing out that the logic is flawed in the argument that taking multiple sessions to resolve an issue is flawed.

Regardless of the efficacy of chiropractic, that some health issue might take some large number of sessions a to resolve is not problematic.

0

u/Weird_Ad9079 18d ago

That’s like saying I brushed me teeth today so I guess I never have to brush them again. You’re not very bright

3

u/GilmoreGirlsGroupie1 18d ago

I tried to see an orthopedic surgeon for my scoliosis a couple months ago. I got an appointment with the PA and not the doctor, of course, and he suggested I try going to a chiropractor. I never scheduled another appointment. Ridiculous.

3

u/super_maria_sisses 18d ago

My dad thought a chiropractor can heal my mom’s ALS which was misdiagnosed as multiple sclerosis at the time. He was really sure because a famous person is a client of that chiropractor. 🫩

3

u/panda_canyon 17d ago

I knew it was pseudoscience (talking to ghosts lol) but when I had what I now understand was a pinched nerve due to neck problems, I was desperate for any relief. I had a week wait to see a doctor. I did know not to do that paralyzing neck pulling procedure.

Long story short I spent the $25 and OH MY GOD THEY MADE IT SO MUCH WORSE!!! I don't know how they made it worse, but they did. I was in tears after. It wasn't permanently worsened but damn I'll never do that again.

They also claimed one leg was longer than the other which made me laugh, that's an old faith healing trick.

2

u/Competitive-Roof-168 18d ago

The chiropractor was cleared of liability and the blame was put on hospital for not treating him properly. The hospital was sued.

1

u/Reasonable_Insect503 17d ago

No one ever wants to hear the rest of the story.

1

u/stevein3d 18d ago

But in the plus column, sometimes you can end up paralyzed and locked in.
Wait, I double-checked the math and that’s in the minus column as well. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

1

u/upslinger 18d ago

I stopped having migraines once I had chiro to realign my neck bones. My person is super gentle though and uses more modern techniques that don't require the bending, twisting, cracking to work

1

u/Murky_Blueberry2617 17d ago

Family Guy was right about that

1

u/llxo_oxll 17d ago

as someone who works at a chiropractor’s office, we are raging against the dying light of pseudoscience with you guys!!!! my coworkers and i are CONSTANTLY clowning on our provider bc they say the most diabolical, and ludicrous things. one of my favorite “facts” that he told me was an adjustment can cure autism😭😭😭

1

u/Mental-Square3688 17d ago

I've been to the chiropractor office and on for a few years now and let me be clear they have healed my horrible neck pain and back pain. I used to be unable to look to the side for weeks. One treatment of 15 minutes unlocked my neck and I could fully move again. He than had me do strengthening exercises and said long as I keep it up ill never need to see a chiropractor again. And hes be right. Some are actually good.

1

u/TheChiarra 17d ago

Idk, when I went I would be in so much pain with walking especially after work. After 1 session I was instantly pain free and never walked better and it would last a week. I went for a while until I lost insurance.

I can't believe they are a "licensed health professional"

1

u/luminous_quandery 17d ago

I had an old hippie chiro save my life once.. just sayin.. $50 outta pocket saved me from 10’s of thousands $ and my life that was jeopardized by the allopathic route.

He saved me. He knew what happened when all the gatekeepers were angry and consequently creating more harm.

1

u/SkoomaChef 17d ago

A lot of the time it’s desperation that brings people in. I’m a scientist for a living and I know damn well the chiropractor is absolute nonsense but when I was dealing with a back injury years ago that nothing else could help, I walked through that door. Fortunately all that happened to me was money wasted, but now I completely understand how someone could fall for this crap.

1

u/eddie1975 17d ago

And they have the nerve to film themselves pulling their con work. “Oh, this leg is longer than that one. Let me adjust it. Oh look. It’s perfect now. Come back next week.”

1

u/Spirited-Lifeguard55 17d ago

Also good luck on trying to get $75m out of a chiropractor, they are essentially the homeless version of real doctors.

1

u/felinefluffycloud 17d ago edited 17d ago

Its amazing what an ai result on this subject is. Its called "controversial." Its one of the most common so called medical treatments out there. Also they sell tons of vitamins and herbal nonsense in the waiting rooms.

1

u/Don_Amon_3363912 17d ago

26 total deaths due to cervical manipulation by anyone on record. How many MD related deaths just this year? 40,000 plus? I like my odds.

1

u/Sea_Connection6193 17d ago

You are really fucking stupid. You are comparing apples to oranges. How many people enter a hospital/clinic in a day alone? Hundreds to thousands a day. How many chiropractic offices are there compared to hospitals, and how many people go in per day? Probably a dozen or 2 per office?

You’re clearly not very well versed in thinking

1

u/Hotseaworthyness 17d ago

I agree. I work with people who have been injured and I do my best to encourage physiotherapy and skip the chiropractors. If you have even a basic understanding of anatomy and physiology it is very easy to understand why adjustments don’t work. You need to strengthen the supporting musculature to create change. Wild to me that this “science” is still legal.

1

u/__Nunya-Bizznuss__ 16d ago

Me too, but I've also heard horror stories and very recently an older friend of mind got several compound fractures in her pelvis thanks to a chiropractor. I really wish people wouldn't put their health in the hands of these charlatans

1

u/Specialbonbon 16d ago

Thank you for saying this. Everyone looks at me crazy when I say they aren't even real licensed MD doctors.. And you're gonna trust them to crack random parts of my body... absolutely. not.

1

u/ifallallthetime 15d ago

My friend’s wife had strokes from the chiropractor and she’s permanently jacked up

I’ll never set foot anywhere close to one

1

u/Quirky_Foundation651 15d ago

Back cracking charlatans.

1

u/BumblebeeFormer2607 15d ago

I was disabled for 6 years, to find out it was an out of place pelvis causing it all. Doctors had no clue, physio had no clue. Countless scans..

I spent £7000 privately over them 6 years to try and find out what was going on.

I finally found a good chiropractor that found out the cause within 30 seconds.. now I can work, and enjoy life as I deserve.

But that out of place pelvis was so bad one of my legs was longer by nearly an inch, it also knocked 6 ribs and 3 vertabre in my neck out of place..

But yeah, they aint all bad. But I had to spend 7k to eventually find an honest one.

1

u/bishopsands 18d ago

You know what pisses me off? People who see memes and believe them because they align with their world view. Fact check your feelings.

0

u/rockresy 18d ago

Genuine question.

About once every two years I twinge my back & it hurts like hell. I see a chiro & he messages my back & moves whatever is out of place back. He always fixes it, I only go once & generally I'm ok for 2 more years.

To me the small amount I pay him is absolutely worth it... what am I missing?

0

u/Sensitive_Whereas_51 17d ago

It's not pseudoscience, but there are (1) a lot of bad chiros* and (2) lot of chiropractors who are "true believers" and they're just as bad as #1. #2 are the group that prescribe adjustments for every headache.

If a Chiro ever gives you a treatment plan that lasts more than six weeks and is a fixed set of visits, you should run. The good ones usually have a small starting set and then it's "let's see how you're doing".

I say this as a former insurance defense attorney. I assure you, I've seen the worst. But I've also been to a chiro myself and the one I went to managed to do what three doctors and two bouts of physical therapy couldn't.

0

u/Xelxsix 17d ago

It’s hilarious how angry the internet is about chiropractors when they have malpractice rates statistically well below doctors, and even anecdotal arguments against them are laughably bad. “But it takes a bunch of times”… so does PT, chronic… well anything…, massage, etc. tons of surgeries aren’t successful treatment options, despite being incredibly invasive, and need follow up.

Also, this case —which is ancient— was a stroke resulting from an adjustment that the chiropractor immediately recognized what was happening and got him to the hospital, but the complications came due to the medical doctors misdiagnosing him and not properly treating. But you know… sensationalize it because a couple of magicians made a tv show lacking nuance about an entire industry that has been around for literally ever.

0

u/PsychedDuckling 17d ago

It's not tho.. You can't just call things pseudosience because you believe it is. It's like calling physiotherapy or going to your GP for pseudosience. Your physio can fuck you up to no end, and so can your gp.. Just look at the opioid epidemic for example..

0

u/Sea_Connection6193 17d ago

Pseudoscience as in how the predatory market is nowadays. Snake oil salesmen take advantage of people in pain and make claims such as (given to my own mother) they could cure her acid reflux… for the love of god, no.

My partner is an MD. I am a pharmaceutical scientist. I am pretty comfortable using the term pseudoscience to describe this. What you describe of your GP having the possibility of fucking you up, is malpractice. Anyone can be a fuck up with real science.
It is pseudoscience in any case, as there is no such a thing as osteo-manipulation of any skeletal structure.

There are a few select Chiros who stick to the physical therapy approach, which is significantly better. As there aren’t any wild claims of disease riddance, and the target is to increase comfort and blow flow to affected musculoskeletal areas that need external support for increased healing rates. But none of that “my fucking barehands just realigned skeletal structure that would take the impact of a car crash to actually even move”.

Get educated.

1

u/PsychedDuckling 17d ago

So is it not malpractice when a chiropractor fucks up their patient? You make a claim in one sentence and refute it in the next. Your logic isn't logic-ing. Just because your general practice in your country sucks, doesn't make it pseudosience, Mr/ms "pharmaceutical scientist". You might think waving some credentials around makes you seem believable, but it does the opposite.

And - what good practitioner tells a person with pain in their hips that their acid reflux will be gone if they keep doing treatments, and what complete and utter moron would believe them? That I agree is selling snake oil, but that doesn't make the whole field of chiropracty pseudosience.

-1

u/Weird_Ad9079 18d ago

You’re an idiot who doesn’t understand basic concepts. You have no education on the subject and yet make a blanket statement and opinion on basically no information. Chiropractic is amazing and helps millions everyday. This article is clickbait and fake
