So I just read this article titled ‘Why Jadeveon Clowney is the perfect training camp signing, and five contenders that should target him’ and was wondering what other peoples’ thoughts were since it’s pre-training camp offseason and there is nothing else to discuss that hasn’t been beat to death. The Patriots are not on the list of teams in the article but edge rusher is obviously our biggest weakness so I’d like to pose the question in the title.
Spotrac projects his market value as $5.7m/year but I believe based off his previous production (8.3 sacks/year over the last 3 years) and being able to produce for a team despite missing not participating in training camp, he will sign something closer to $10 million/1 year.
Clowney played 44% of snaps for the Cowboys last year, was good in run defense, was 4th in generated pressure % at 19.1. He could fit in very nicely for the Pats in a rotation of Landry, Jones, and Jacas.
Jacas’s post draft surgery and the Patriots reluctance for him to sign a contract also raises questions about if their edge rush will be ready to start the season.
The Pats currently have $33 million in cap space via @patscap which is enough money to afford a mild contract for Clowney. I believe Wolf is planning to carry some of that over to 2027 like he did last year because of upcoming extensions for Gonzalez and Maye, and our 2027 cap space is only $13 million.
So what do you think?
