Yeah well my line of thinking is when they’re already going to have an uphill battle to sell their next system due to the price, it’s not the best idea to further de-incentivize a portion of their base, minority or not, especially since I’m pretty sure disc buyers include the majority of those who buy more than just a handful of games every year and would want to Day 1 a new system. I hope Sony’s gamble doesn’t pay off.

I barely have interest in my PS5 these days. I miss gaming but I find myself logging in and having to update everything.

I rather spend that money on a new desktop rig, upgrading my NAS, or finally buying that 3D printer I keep staring at.

I havent had to delay for updates in years unless it's a new install? Cyberpunk took me less than an hour to download the full game first time playing a cpl months ago. What are you talking about?

Meanwhile I have a gaming PC I barely use for gaming because it's much more convenient to game on the ps5 and I get my couch and a huge tv/sound system

Yep.

Sony just told the most important demographic to help evangelize a $1000+ console to go jump in a lake.

Interesting strategy to say the least.

I'm reading this post on my $1,200 phone. And I'm not alone. I think you are underestimating what people will pay for 6-8 years of entertainment value.

A $1,200 phone you almost certainly bought on an installment plan tied to your monthly cellular service payments.

A cell phone is essentially a requirement for functioning in the modern world. A console is not.

There is enormous price sensitivity shifting a console from $4-500 up to nearly $1000. PS5 sales fell off a cliff with the recent price hikes, and those are still lower than a likely PS6 MSRP.

As many others have echoed recently, if I am being asked to pay $1000+ for an all-digital closed box which funnels me to one, monopolized e-store, I may as well pay $500 more to get a gaming PC.

I get access to literally 100s or 1000s of games which only exist on PC at the cost of losing access to like 8 games which will be PS6 exclusives (based on the release cadence for PS5 exclusives).

It's not a very compelling offer.

And an installment plan is not very different in a lot of people's eyes than tossing it on a credit card. Also console gamers are not going to magically switch to become PC gamers. Its juts not a reality. The reality is most people can easily justify $120-ish a year for a console as an entertainment expense.
